saw it in midvalley, its better than the n100, but for the same price and spec asus a8 looks even better.
its still doesnt look as sturdy as an asus, and theres a big gap beside the speaker, i guess in the pic is the one with extended battery.
but lenovo got a bunch of bundled stuff, hehe.

would i buy it?
if i can get good deal, sure.

nvr look at the real model, but from all the review, it doesnt suffer heat problem and has 3.5-4hours battery life, which means i can carry it around always, and type it for comfortably blush.gif

Y400 got 3 models, the core duo model 945423a RM 2888 is only a good buy if u like the specs n entry level processor for good normal performance, if u need something nicer n support vista is better way then u will consider the 945424A at RM 3388.

both difference in core duo T2050 processor which at 533FSB while another one is Cored 2 Duo T5500 at 667FSB.

others is same,
512mb DDR2 RAM
80GB SATA HDD
ODD DVDRW drive
3 USB,IEEE firewire
bluetooth
3945abg wireless

the speciality of this Y series is :
- the NOVA button that located beside the power on/off button is a embedded recovery system at which u install any windows, u can do a backup into harddrive and then u can do ur own recovery. not alike thinkpad of R60 9455A18 and 9455A53 that without windows then u unable to use the thinkvantage rescue and recovery.

- the touchpad that hidden below the upper casing is R&D from four lenovo labs around the world which from japan, beijing , shanghai and US. although the design of the touchpad is unique but it seems it lost some accuracy. but nice is the left click n right click as if u really look closely, the surface of the pad is in tiny horizontal lines that give user a good grip and is metal too.

user posted image

- the two hinge that holds the lcd is quite a better design to give the hinge more long lasting as is a screw in and the hinge is metal hold.

- the slim design n if u notice the casing is without the opener as the screw hinge will clip at the point of the exact closure.

- the ODD drive ( slot in) is quite nice as if compare to the original notebook drive that pops out, it wont make user accidentally bangs on it or too pressure the drive when try to clip the cd onto the drive, the bad about this drive is in long term there might be dust that go into it. the ODD drive might can slot in the mini disc ( i havent try before and not dare to try...hehe.)

- shuttle button which is red color that sits on the right panel is for user easily to access to multimedia functions but the software interface looks funny for me i mean didnt have that professional outlook.

the bad point
- although its slim design, but heat ventilation is rather poor than the lenovo 3000 N100 and the heatsink is not copper alike thinkpad too. but after i testrun for 48 hours, it did run on the same temperature and still ok, just u will feel some heat above the keyboard .

- warranty wise is just local warranty only or to be exact is just India, thailand, singapore, indonesia and more to be coming soon as is depend on which country did sell this model.

- the sound is louder than lenovo 3000 n100 but if talks about the sound quality is not that competent enough. hopes soundmax did try to fix this problem n try to provide better drivers. even thinkpad 2 piece speaker is loud n clear and more treble.

for the Y400 945525A the higher specs is on 1gb ram, 100gb sata hdd and also the geforce 7300 which runs on 256mb memory and is bundle with xp home edition.

Y300 that comes with the face recognition camera is the first of its kind as it not only look into ur eyes sizing but also the measures between nose too. tried with copy of photo and really cant login. the weight is just around 2.13kg with 13.3 inch vibrant view display.

overall the new y400 did brings nice specs for lenovo lineup models while they still continuing with the 3000 N100 laptops too.

*above just my comments and review, if there is mistakes, please do correct me. thank you.

at least better than acer in terms of the overall built quality (better keyboard, speaker, and casing), and best online support (u'll be surprise if u own it, u can always play w software and firmware update)

all the task u want to do will be just fine, only thing tht may limit u is gaming. Warcraft yes, CnC or AoE no idea becoz i seldom play games, if u find it's playable w Geforce FX5200, it should be equivalent to tht blush.gif

it's the GMA950 bottlenect, no matter which model u choose, the GMA950can only do light gaming smile.gif

IBM service is excellent, as long as u bring it to their service centre at Tmn Tun Doktor Ismail (will be shifting to 1U), but on-site service wise, the only u can rely is DELL, other brands is just shakehead.gif

for the 2 model comparison Raja Utara given, we can know tht the price range is around RM3k +-, so we assume he's discussing for GMA950

spot on..my range is 3k+-.

just came back from klcc. found the Y400 series. nice looking lappie nod.gif

the salesgirl informed me that there wouldn't be any difference between core duo 1.60G and C2D 1.66G in terms of gaming. is this true? i know stuff like MS office n browsing would practically be the same on any lappie...just want to know whether C2D would provide a smoother gaming exp then core duo...any comment guys..

@shirohamada, thanks for the great info smile.gif

@Raja Utara, in benchmark yes, but real life no, because 3D take the major role here.. wat u hv to concern is the video converting, it relies on the processor more rather than gaming, however it would be differs in few seconds too tongue.gif

C2D is great mainly because of the 64bit function to support 64bit vista, but i doubt the maturity time for the 64bit software to take advantage in this few years

if the RM300 is not a significant amount for u, go for the C2D, it'll tend to be more future approve; but if RM300 sounds a burden, CD1.60 will be just fine, at least for the coming 2 years time, 32bit will not die because there is 32bit vista, and 32bit vista will run 16bit program where 64bit vista cannot smile.gif

I am not sure whether we are able to upgrade the spec upon purchase the notebook from Lenovo or not? For examples, Lenovo Y400 (945425A), what if I want to add till 2GB Memory RAM, and get Windows Vista? laugh.gif

I will advise u to take HP rather than Lenovo.
Lenovo putting IBM tag is just a gimmick... The quality of lenovo is not that good compare with IBM 1 last time.. Unless u buy the 1 with the thinkpad logo on it(but mainly for business use).

current Y400 945428A price at RM 3898 only and comes with 1 GB IPOD shuffle if you got notice in the newspaper last week and can say is value for money to buy this model !!! Had test through its running on windows vista home basic and i give thumbs up for its smooth run and its quick save settings and shut down if you ever compared to other model. For me i compared with T60 which with T7200 processor which run on vista business but seems Y400 runs great. This y400 geforce 7300 graphics is dedicated 64mb, not 128mb and is expandable through ram sharing to 334mb.

this 28A model selling like a hot cake during PC fair with the price of RM3598!!! The stock all finished within half day!!!
i very disapointed cannot bring back home one.
only got it on Monday. I upgraded it to 2GB with the total price RM3620 after minus out those freebie.

test it run quite smooth with the vista. but problem for me:
1. Media Player cannot play DVD movie in Vista Home Basic!!
2. Most of my engineering software are not supported!
3. Some of the vista GUI and dialog box are not user friendly and annoying!!

So I decide to switch to XP!!! But the problem is no downgrade right from MS for the Vista Home edition!!! It's only for Vista Business and Ultimate!!! @#$%^&*^%$
Anybody face the same problem? Have someone sucessfully switch back to XP? How?

i think that's the only way what i have to do. thanks for your advice.

Added on April 18, 2007, 2:37 amGuys, I have formated the partition C and do the setup for XP Pro SP2.
The installation done within 30min.
But i found that some of the drivers I downloaded from the Lenovo site are not working on the hardware.
My main concern is the nvidia graphic driver. now my laptop can only run on generic graphic driver which is 800x600 and lag when scrolling down the pages.
I tried to search from nvidia site, downloaded and run the forceware but end up it pop up message say couldn't find a suitable driver for the hardware!!! i try to use the Y300 forceware also the same.

Anyone can help on this? Is there any inf for this system so i can setup the driver manually? I really go mad since my work stuck due to this!!!

hi. still trying to decide whether to buy this. saw the pamphlet:-
Y400 (945432A) RM2498 - within budget

but add RM1099 get Y400 (945428A) better spec of core2 (T5500), 1GB RAM, 120GB SATA & nVidia GeForec 7300 - slightly above budget

but N100 (0689GTA) selling for RM2999 with core2 (T5200), 512 RAM, 120 GB SATA & Vista Basic but only Intel GMA950.

Dont know what to decide.

Y400 is slightly lighter with 2.4kg + nice design & N100 2.5kg.

Anyone with feedbacks? thanks

I bought mine from orderzone during the PC fair.
for the spec, this is the best price. Other equivalent models will easily 4k-5k.
only thing bad is the preloaded vista home basic is useless for me.
i would recommend to request for XP version before the Vista is mature enough. no point to rush for the OS which is not fully supported by common hardware and software.

But one thing in mind is the drivers from the lenovo download site is sucks.
most of the drivers for XP couldn't work in the lastest 28A model.
u can still use back the vista drivers from the CD came with the laptop.
For the nvidia driver, i got it from 3Dguru which is a modded version, work well in my laptop and better performance!!

another problem on the energycut driver. it's not working well on my XP OS too. everytime when u shut down it will still running, need to end it manually. i feel annoying and uninstalled it. now in the device manager can see a question mark for unknown device. Still looking to solve this.

right now most of the drivers problem solved except this and another question mark called "SM Bus Controller". Not sure what is that. Maybe the PCMCIA controller. I dun have any card so couldn't test it out.

anyone know how to:

1. use the shuttle control without booting up the Os as mentioned in the website promos?

2. how to use the one touch novo recovery button?

any one has problems with the mouse touch pad?
since its on the same level as the keyboard, I always seem to accidentally keep touching it whilst typing and its sends the cursor elsewhere, very irritating.

i didn't try the shuttle control. maybe u can just press the red button while the windows shut down.

to use the Novo recovery button, just press it when the window is shut down.
then it will come to a screen for you to confirm the recovery operation.
i did it once b4 i install XP. everything back to the factory setting like when u first get your laptop.
When i installing XP, i formatted the C and D partition. I'm not sure which partition they put in the recovery files. Now i still can access the recovery screen by pressing the novo button, but i didn't try. just afraid the recovery files have been formatted.

there is no problem to press the button when the windows is on. relax man!

so far no problem with the touch pad. this is the cool thing for this model bcoz it's embedded on the face plate.
u face any problem on it?

1. tried the shuttle button, nope it does power the laptop on

2. mouse touch pad is cool, but like I said, when I type, my palm accidentally touches it and sends the cursor else where and my typing gets jumbled. irritating, lucky theres a handy quick function shortcut button to turn the mouse pad on/off. I like the multi short cuts on the laptop.

3. scared to press the one touch recovery button if it cause me to loose my programmes. funny there no instrutionon how to use it.

4. i have emalied lenonovo via its feedback form on its website, no replies yet.

over all happy with the y400, just bought a slip case for it. now can carry it in my backpack

Answer to yangman:

1. I oso dunno much bout the shuttle. for me is ok since i dun use my laptop for the music.

2. i have the same problem when i typing too due to my big palm.
thanks for remind me to turn off the touch pad. The short cuts are really handy.

3. it won't go recovery process immediately when u press the novo button. there will be some options for u to sellect b4 proceed. there is instruction about the novo recovery button, i forgot it's in the user guide or the one in the CD.

4. Try call the helpline. And jote down the person who answer or take care of your case.

So far i also quite happy with it's performance. I mostly use it for work and browse net.
The complimented bag is ok for me. just slim, light and nice, dun look much like a laptop inside. mind to show the pic of the slim case u bought? how much?

slip case 'travelpac' brand rm 80, maybe in LYP can get cheaper. i got from digital mall PJ. its slim and low profile, not much bigger than the laptop itself. I dunlike the normal laptop bag. Now I can use the slip case and place in my normal back pack no one would know. picture later.

lelong.com someone selling a cheaper version at rm35

I too use mainly for net and word, but would like to learn the laptop's full abilities.

Fosa marketing tells me that a lot of lenovo was sold during the PC fair... surprisingly not many post on this tread.

yangman, r u using vista or xp? i dumped the bundled vista home baisc and reload it with XP Pro!
i try to use my Y400 28A for CAD and CAE with no problem thanks to it's ok graphic card and 2GB RAM upgrade is worth too!!

Mergumi,
for 3D gaming, i would recommend to get better graphic card and higher ram.
sometime i open my laptop for more than 6hours but it dun show any overheat problem. the best is get a cooling pad for it for longer run.

Since u asking ppl here, mostly will recommend the lenovo. my initial plan also get the Compaq V3000 series but end up buying the Y400 28A for its better spec/price. And i heard from my fren using the V3000 is not so stable, i'm not so sure about that.

just try to help out someone who need help. i know the feeling when nobody to help and u need to bang here and there, very frustrating.
any problem about the drivers for XP can ask me. i searched for couple of days and manage to solve 90% of it. only left a unknow device i think it should be the energycut and shuttle center.

Y400....the most useless piece of notebook i ever used. The keypad is horrendous. Pressing "up" key will also activate the "left" or "right" key. Battery looks out of alignment with the casing. Sigh...

I have used Toshiba, IBM Thinkpad and even HP. But Lenovo is the real let down to me.

suntory, did u try to get back to lenovo about the defects of the keys??

i'm using my y400 28A for online, 3D CAD/CAE and gaming, so far no problem.
i'm ok with the design although the red shuttle buttons look like cheap plastic!
performance wise it run 3D CAD smoothly and warcrafts3 is loaded within seconds!!
so i quite happy with it!!

i don't fancy much on the speaker for a laptop. mainly the performance, size and reliability. so for me it's much better than the dell and acer i used b4.

I dun like vista too, and most of my software not support it.
i format it and install XP Pro SP2.

I saw in Star newspaper today showing Y400 (945448A) model is selling at RM2,299. But that's only with 512 MB of RAM. Is this price negotiable?

1. tried the shuttle button, nope it does power  the laptop on

2. mouse touch pad is cool, but like I said, when I type, my palm accidentally touches it and sends the cursor else where and my typing gets jumbled.  irritating, lucky theres a handy quick function shortcut button to turn the mouse pad on/off.

*
regarding to the no.2 point(red words), i meet the same problem too. but i cant find any shortcut to turn on/off the touch pad. can any1 help me? ty nod.gif

I changed my OS to WinXP Pro, and find a suitable drivers then solved!!
Why u must use Vista? Some more is Vista 64!!! shakehead.gif

btw, just try to ask the IBM for the drivers. I think those in their website and nVidia website cannot be used.

I have got back my notebook, but no sound coz the chipst of this new board is different. CSA will reorder the system board for me. So, for the time been, I will use it for temp since I need the notebook so urgently.

Feel really upset with the services, cause they suppose to provide the right hardware. Like my case, I have to go twice to the service centre just to change the system baord.....

cry.gif my newly bought lenovo y400 top left speaker has a huge problem exist . when i play any movie or song , no sound was heard and sometimes some " pop , pop , pop " sound coming out from that particular speaker , i have checked with low volume - same! , other songs format - same! other movie format -same !. and i have checked with many different person .

To correct this , i had go to wisma CSA at petaling jaya section 13 which told by lenovo customer service assistance i called through phone . I told the service engineer about my problem and my laptop was kept one day for inspection , but on the 2nd day , the engineer called and tell me that he cant find any problem with the speaker , I'm very positive about the annoying sound because not only i myself hear it , my brother , my friends hear it too .

okay , now the crappy part , of course i'm mad hearing that the engineer told me that . For sure i warn him to check it properly , which he say he will do and call me back another time . Next , i waited for a weekend but no calls is received from the CSA engineer, so i called back . The news , my laptop speaker was told to have been changed . and i'm free to collect my laptop anytime . The next day , i went and collect my laptop . thinking that they have fix it , i just simply play a song and hear the sound, i did not hear it properly because i'm in a rush . When i'm back home and watch a movie on my laptop , the freaking annoying sound exist again . i was like what the h*** !

I suspected that they did not change my speaker but they told me that they have changed , I will call up lenovo tmr and go find the CSA company again . i will update on this post soon .

i also just bought a Lenovo Y400 last week and thanks god it doesnt give me any problem....

sometimes we buy an electronic devices depends on our luck whether the product is in good condition or not....
eg : like buying handphone, from 100 phones that are selling at market, there will be around 10 pieces which will have problems appear...

just my 2cents opinion

i've issue with the bluetooth connection, cant seems to get the laptop to connect with my phone.

I'm just using the original driver that comes with the CDs. I've played around with the Bluetooth Configuration in the control panel, but the menu is so simple, nothing to play around basically. When i click on "My Bluetooth Places" it will comes back to me saying no bluetooth devices available.

I've tried scanning the bluetooth devices thru my phone, same result, saying that no device found.

I've enabled the bluetooth function (fn + f5), but nothing seems to work.

Anyone can help?

i guess y400 doesn't come with bluetooth, tho i have those bluetooth driver installed. Try clicking on the My Bluetooth Places, but couldnt find any devices, or it doesnt have bluetooth at all.

How much is the current price for the Y410 model in Malaysia, they introduced this model in USA today for $699 USD (2399RM). See this page for more info. Oh i found some prices here 3000+ RM is kinda pricey compared to USA and Europe where this notebook is less than 2400RM, slighty slower CPU but still 1000RM more, i want a 2400RM budget lappy wink.gif

price to be determined by the specs.
Y400 series start from RM2k+.
I got mine at RM3.6k but with better higher processors and 2GB, and nvidia Geforce Go 7300.

I'm another y400 user for 11 months....

So far so good with the laptop....

But recently i have some really annoying problems for my laptop...

I just reformat my system, i have some problem that i never have since the first time i set up after buying.

1) My power indicator always show that i am using AC power. That's means i did not know how many percent of my battery left, when it is empty, it shut down itself.... Who can help me in this problem?

2) What's the problem? software or hardware problem?

3) When trying to load it with Vista 32bits / 64 bits, the audio driver downloaded from lenovo web site is not working...

4) The driver from lenovo web site is not correct. Only if i able to get back my CD then i get to solve some other problems.

1&2) This is very strange!!! bcoz normally this power related indicator supposed to be related directly to the hardware! I didn't face this problem after i formatted my system. I really not so sure about this. Please seek help from their technical support! (wish u good luck that they can help you)

3&4) Some drivers got problem from their site. Try the one on the supplied CD first. if cannot, try this http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherb...iver&FileID=837

Good Luck!
