What type of backing do you guys want? My vote goes for a standard rock track. A great platform for rock and shred licks alike. thumbup.gif

EDIT : I did a quick scan through my mini-library, found 2 interesting tracks. One's a funk-fusion flavoured track, the other's a samba Santana-ish track. It would be quite a challenge to solo something tasteful over but it's definitely something different from the usual rock stuff. biggrin.gif

I think we should look for a generic track rather then an established rhythm track....... more like just basic drums, bassline and riff.

well since everyone wants santana then better be it. coz if i do the fusion one end up no one doing it then this jam wont be finished.

blacktrix, u sure u want the kb37? the keys feel weird. i would rather recomment getting a UX2 (coz theres phantom power) and later get a m audio midi controller.

for my recordings, at the moment its straight to my laptop's line in.

It's because
a) I want a keyboard because I'm having Audio Design (!!!!!!) as a subject this semester and
b) The foot controller would be AWESOME! I already use 3 foot pedals (2 on the Tonelab SE and my Wylde Wah) and might add in a Whammy and/or a rotovibe if I'm feeling lucky...... I definitely NEED a foot controller to get the most out of my sound..... everybody here knows I cover up my incredibly sucky soloing with the Wah.... it's my own personal "Enhancement" Pedal. tongue.gif

I have to listen to it properly and see what spots we have available..... and then I'll make a sign up sheet like the last Jam...... Do you want dueling solos again (like the Metal trackin LYN Jam III) or the individual solos (the Classic Rock track, LYN Jam II)??

No, this is a VIRTUAL Jam.
Basically, we'll post a backing track and then you do a solo over it. We'll list down the time slots where you want to go over with the solo. Once everyone's solo is done, someone will do a master recording and mix all the tracks together, making it seem like a totally awesome jam session!

Check the last 3 Jams to get an idea of what we mean....... but I THINK Jam III wasn't complete. I'll see if I can find Jam II on my PC somewhere.

the jam is gonna be held in THIS thread.

hey guys, dont worry if u cant play well, thats the beauty of virtual jam is that u can record ur take as many times as you want (but then lazy ppl like me will just take the first few tracks and leave mistakes there like dragonforce. hehe)

just whack anything on pentatonics. just make sure u nail ur track down before blacktrix, that way blacktrix has nothing left to play. haha. jk.

on a more serious note, just give it a try. alot of us will do mistakes too. you wouldnt learn if u dont try. this is a good chance coz u can do as many takes as you want.

put beginners first so they wont get demotivated when they hear more experienced players play. *cough*means zeroleet goes last or else none of us dares to play*

itll also make the song nicer as it starts simple before building up to more complex structures.

thanks leddy freaky for the tracks you sent via email, so as i understood, we're all gonna play on Sultana Smoothie ?

ok, here is the cut !!

(The time indicates when the part starts. It ends when the next part starts... don't bleed on each other, please, you six-strings vampires !!)

Verse 1 - 0:00
Verse 2 - 0:36
Verse 3 - 0:55
Verse 4 - 1:11
Verse 5 (trumpets) - 1:28
Verse 6 - 1:44
Verse 7 - 1:59
Verse 8 - 2:17
Verse 9 - 2:32
Verse 10 (trumpets) - 2:49
Verse 11 (trumpets) - 3:05
Verse 12 (empty) - 3:22
Verse 13 - 3:39
Verse 14 - 3:56
Verse 15 (trumpets) - 4:12
Verse 16 (trumpets) - 4:29
Verse 17 (trumpets) - 4:45

I divided into a lot of little pieces, but i doubt there are 17 people that wanna join !! So feel free to use 2 or 3 slots if you do feel inspired. Shy ones can just use one verse.

The piece is a repetition of the same pattern over and over, with an extended variation when trumpets kick in.

For the "trumpets" verses, I don't recommend soloing wildly over them, but rather try to "voice" them or play "Q&A", or something like this. Because they play a melody, it would sound too "busy" with a solo on top of them. Try to integrate them in your solo, in those ways or your own way wink.gif (just my two euros, but do as you feel !!)

Have fun !!

Thanks Led Zep ! Hope to hear EBP on this one, and all the newcomers I didn't have a chance to salute.

"a try" ? you'd better give it all you've got, or else, it's so not worth it !!

i forgot how we will record the tracks...
1) send one mp3 with the backing track + solo track
2) send the .wav with only your solo track

Up to someone to do the final mixdown, cutting all the solos on top of the backing track, in order to keep an acceptable audio quality..

Is that correct ?

Btw, anybody has a USB modeller (Toneport, JamLab, Tonelab etc) to lend??? Previously I've recorded with the Magicstomp into the soundcard and I had to go through loads of post-editing. A Toneport would definitely save my life. biggrin.gif

Nice solo echobrainproject, although the pitch shifter effect seems a little out-of-place in the beginning. biggrin.gif

Anyway the magazine did gave some soloing tips for the track:
Sultana Smoothie
Key : A
Suggested Scales : A Minor Pentatonic, A Aeolian, A Harmonic Minor
Technique Tip : Try fingers for a mellow attack. Or hybrid picking. Harmonic Minor licks give a twist over the progression's final chord.
Tone Tip : Use midrange, a subtle delay and flip between neck and bridge humbuckers.

Have fun soloing, guys! biggrin.gif

EBP, no, i can't change... i wanted the trumpets, and anyway i just recorded so now it's too late wink.gif sorry, zeroleet.

i could only format in OGG file, not mp3... so for the ones that can't read OGG, i put also the AIF file.

AIF quality
http://download.yousendit.com/6ACE0DEF0D3AC20F

OGG quality
http://download.yousendit.com/D6B0FECA039006E0

i'm quite happy with this recording, after few weeks of inactivity (guitar-wise) tongue.gif

ebp , i just heard your part more into details : i like the middle part, when you go a bit crazy. I don't really understand what you're doing (hearing thru pc speakers) but it shows a nice "breathing" and somehow an inner melody. Sweet smile.gif

the first part is following the melody, nothing to say here (guitar sound is a bit big/aggressive here, isn't it ?)
the last part, i would say the bends are not spot-on, but otherwise it's quite a nice bluesy part. Too much overdrive maybe (to my ears).

about my part : legato part reminds you of what ? one of my previous jam ? possible... same player, same hands smile.gif

I hope I can join too. But firstly, I suck. Haha. And secondly, very busy travelling around this month, just started uni life and all, guess no time for me to sit down and record.

By the way, have checked out EBP's solo. Cool one. Although I don't really understand the middle fast part too, but it sounds great. Haha.

P/S: A noob question from noob me, how to listen to the OGG file Pix uploaded?

hi miss silver isle,

i think you can find free ogg player on internet.. but otherwise, even windows media player can play the AIF file so you could download this one instead. Both formats are different encoding of the same solo...

if you didn't like the AIF file, you won't like the OGG one either laugh.gif but yeah, i'm now noticing that my solo is a bit "lazy", not much too listen too... wahh, nevermind lah.

.aif are great when doing voice over...not only they have high playback quality, but they get to stay in the top layer of the audio layer...so more clarity....do correct me if i'm wrong...

just a note : the files i uploaded are a "50-seconds" clip with my solo on it, not the whole song !
maybe led zep could upload the AIF (or WAV) of the CD track directly if audiophiles need it for better performance biggrin.gif

rust reaver : play the same melody, but offset by a constant number of intervals, accordingly to the scale being "used" by the melody... (yes, it doesn't sound easy and it does require some harmony background !)

hey, man... didn't mean to confuse things, just giving me 2cents from me nice and comfy arm-chair (since I ain't booking no slot on the track hehe)... wink.gif

you could probably record one solo... then play another one over it, "ikut feel" style, and see what happens... icon_idea.gif

heck, you may even come up with some really cool contrapuntal stuff that way... thumbup.gif

...or do it Randy Rhoads-style: record the same solo twice and pan each track 100% right and 100% left respectively (although, Randy does lay down a 3rd center track as well). That way, you'll end up with a slight chorus-like effect... cool2.gif

That's a great intro man! I love it!!! The solo is decent but if you wanna get a lyrical solo, try to leave spaces in between licks. It's like your guitar speaks non-stop without stopping for a breath, the listener can tell. biggrin.gif Otherwise it's good! Love the intro! rclxms.gif

hi asura, nice ! otherwise, since you want critics : at 0:28 you're not in the tempo and in the end you tend to play each note on the beat, ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta... in te beginning you played more "uptempo", try to keep it like this afterwards wink.gif

any comment on mine ?

Sure, you can have slot 9, but at the moment, we're still waiting for people to finish their stuff...

If people like Seongkeat still hasn't gotten back to us, we'll have to remove their names off the list.....

Basically, I'll need a roll call!

Valkirye2331, ya wanna try to fit 2 solos in one slot? You take left channel, I take right channel... thumbup.gif  17 seconds, rock-kapak style, ya know what I mean...  cool2.gif            ...uh, but ya gotta help me figure out the key, mmmkay?  whistling.gif
*
Dude, the key is stated like a few pages back! Anyhow, thanks Mr Blacktrix. RustReaver and I will both take slot 9...me being on left channel and RustReaver being on the right channel.

So how do we do this again..just send the solo track in wav format alone or the solo segment with backing in wav? Sorry for asking again. blush.gif

Hehe, so I can't get valkirye2331 to cover up my sloppiness? Damn... I always believed in safety in numbers... whistling.gif

Ok, ok... Mr Blacktrix has spoken, and I will comply. notworthy.gif Please book Verse 9 and 14 for us then, good sir.

Hey Valkyrei2312, you take Verse 9, I'll take Verse 14? Or vice versa? We'll sort it out at the week's end. I tumpang your rig, can?

Decided to go with Echo's advice and go with the UX1 and a separate USB Midi controller.

Anyways, prefer to get new.

And I'm going for the UX1 instead of M-Audio because of the excellent modeling software by Line6.

You've just unleashed the f*kking foory! vmad.gif ...hehe, just kidding... whistling.gif

I think as Blacktrix said, there's gonna have to be a roll-call sooner or later. Maybe that'll free up a few slots... I'm finding it tough to play something decent for 17 seconds - gotta make each note count. Stressssss... sweat.gif

Hmmm... if this thing can be wrapped up before Gathering 3.0, maybe we could have it in the set list?

Okay i've recorded for my slot in Verse 9 at 2:32
Here's the link to download
http://download.yousendit.com/C2A52DE53C5E63FF

This take on a latin style song proved to be REALLY challenging for me (no experience in latin playing), so let's not be too harsh shall we? (talk about buying insurance...! whistling.gif )

Now what do I do? I supposed there is no finalized person for the Final Mixdown yet, right? I'll just hang on to it then.

valkyrie, wooow... very interesting solo ! good usage of tension building and release, arpeggios brings an exotic touch to our bunches of bluesy solos and overall your solo sends your "message" very clearly. One could say it is a bit "cold" or surgerical, but i don't biggrin.gif

you overdubbed your arpeggios at the end ? I can hear like a stereo effect, but i'm not so sure.. is it two guitars or an effect ? please share your secret wink.gif

Thank you all again smile.gif

Hahaha Pix you got me there! tongue.gif Actually the entire solo is double tracked and I think it's probably coz of the bad timing which makes the 'stereo' effect seem more apparent.

The 'exotic' thing..truth is..i can't play blues to save my life so I'm forced to play something like so! And btw, Pix mind e-mailing me your take on the solo as well at valkyrie1232@yahoo.com or upload here in the forum again, I couldn't download the track coz the link already expired sad.gif

Vbs, I use a Jackson TH-1 Stealth guitar equipped with Steve's Special and Puff Pro puppies smile.gif and hooked it up to my trusty Microcube. For this particular solo I used the Classic Stack Model (actually my knob is always on R-fier...sigh the delinquent I am tongue.gif ).

here is my solo : http://download.yousendit.com/62588CD26FD8703B

it is true your guitar sound is excellent, i'm suprised to hear you managed to get that from a microcube. I guess the guitar + the pups helped to achieve thos good tone smile.gif

overdubbing a solo track with the exact same solo is something i will never be able to do.. there is always a few notes that won't be on the same tempo. you did a great job on this overdubbing !

Just heard your solo, your tone in the beginning somehow reminded me of Eric Clapton! Very stratty and you have some cool low-gain fast licks going on there...kinda reminded me of Zack Kim of Cosmic Funk Express...as in the sudden flurry of notes added with some staccato (can see you have a good ear for anticipation), if you are familiar with Zack Kim's playing you'll know what I mean and yes it's a compliment!

No wonder you were asking the rest of the forumites why they still dare to join after hearing your solo ! tongue.gif Just kidding !

thanks for your comments on my part, it's funny to listen how one's solo is perceived by someone else.

One thing though : i'm playing through a js1000 ! so the neck pick-ups does sound like a strat, with the correct amp settings.

That's me!
I used a Jackson RR3 and a UX2.
Used a JCM800 model, TubeScreamer Model and alot of delay behind it.

Recording a new version soon, using my Wylde Wah and a better ending.

Oh yeah, and if everybody can send me their original recordings in UNCOMPRESSED WAV OR AIF format will be greatly appreciated.

I decided to take up the job of editing the tracks together.

Don't send me MP3 format so I can keep the guitar sounds as high-fidelity as possible.

Cool solo you did there smile.gif
I was thinking that it was a PRS, but the trem flutter at the beginning gave it away smile.gif I guess there are other ways to get that Santana sound.

The first and second solo was good too, but I think the second solo needs to be thickened up a little, sounds a little thin in the mix.

Just heard your solo, Mr Blacktrix. Gotta agree with echobrain on the 'vocal approach' he mentioned!

The beginning was very promising and rather tasteful I might add! But maybe ideas were running out towards the end, which was probably why you are working on changing the ending, eh?

And yes supercolossal, the tone on my solo has to be thinnest among the bunch! (i've always been a thin tone guy). And I was actually using the Fattest Amp Model on my microcube! *doh!*

*doh!*

Which amp setting is that smile.gif? But sometimes what you hear recorded and what's coming out of the speakers can be a little different, maybe you can try to boost the mids a little.

Can somebody post the backign track for this? Also can somebody just give a rough idea what are the actual chord movements? smile.gif

I'm only able to catch Am, Abxx, xx, xx for the beginning and ends with Fmaj7 and E7#9. Am I right?
Nice backing track btw.

Supercolossal, er..there's no real amp setting coz there's no EQ in the microcube. I just maxed out the Tone and Gain (delinquent I am) and used Classic Stack (which supposedly models the JMP-1).

C'mon man, more ppl fill up the slots and let's hear more solos from everyone!

Mr Blacktrix, you mentioned u wanted the WAV files for the recording. Do you want the guitar solo with the backing or just the guitar solo alone with no backing music for your mixing?

blacktrix, hey nice solo and great tone ! as it was said before, starting melody is great but at some point there is an hurge to speed up and spice things up a bit. Your solo is even asking for it, but it looks like your fighting it..

Yeah...... towards the end.... I thought I needed a burst of speed.....
I think I'll go over, slow things down and do it more melodically.

I can't help it! I've been listening to alot of Slash and Zakk stuff lately!

blacktrix : no, sorry, you got me wrong : the solo should be sped up at some point, but it is not because you're fighting it and keeping the same binary rythm. You're steadily playing on the time, without acceleration, whereas the solo is "urging" for machine gun alternate picking.

when you end a "main" melody, to finalize it, you can move out of your "crotchet" rythm for a while and attempt something with quavers, semiquavers, etc... break the monotony of your rythm once in a while. your melody is interesting, so why not keep your rythm interesting as well ? i might be wrong but i think john petrucci's playing clearly illustrates that concept.

On the other hand, you can break up the rythm by going "ternary", or even leave a blank and let the note ring...

Added on March 19, 2007, 2:16 amdidn't i tell you something like that in a previous solo of yours by the way ?
