I am no expert, but I think for a beginner who are used to smartphone, you will love Canon 80d for the tilted touch screen and Dual pixel cmos AF during live view. If budget is a constraint, can go for a used 70D, almost equally good.

If you prefer a smaller body then do explore mirrorless system like Sony, Panasoinc, or Olympus..
some of these body will even allow you to use lens from yesterday body.. with minor adaption. What ever option you choose, important is you feel comfortable with the product and happy to have it beside you to use at any moment. Popular votes does not equal to what you are comfortable with.. what you have invest in today if possible must be able to grow with your future needs unless you have deep pockets. |

If he / she is using or is a precious item, very unlikely you get to borrow. In fact the above post isn't true at all because all you actually need to do is join a group of users with the same brand and go for outings. You don't have to go with what your friends have because that's not the best way to go about. You should go with the brand YOU are comfortable with, in terms of ergonomics and interface. What your friends using may not be the best choice for you. Just buy the brand that you find you "click" best with and join group outings. Many years ago we have LYN Photography group outing. |

QUOTE(ChinWY @ Jun 22 2016, 10:30 PM) If you prefer a smaller body then do explore mirrorless system like Sony, Panasoinc, or Olympus.. @din66 - As ChinWY pointed out, have u thought of Mirrorless, smaller body but dslr quality. Example, Sony a6000 with kit lens, price is around 2.3k at the moment. Or Fujifilm XA2 that came with twin lenses package that cost around the same price. I tried carry a nikon d7000 in my bag but found that it was really big and bulky. Somemore, I find it quite intimidating pointing a big dslr at my friends for casual shots and they usually shy away especially when i topped it up with a nikon sb 700 flash. Since you are asking suggestion for a beginner dslr, I assume you simply want a camera that can take better picture than your smartphone/tablet. If I am right, I think you wont regret getting a mirrorless instead of a dslr. Quite a few friends I knew which started with a dslr has either replaced them with mirrorless or let their dslr sit on the shelf collecting dust. some of these body will even allow you to use lens from yesterday body.. with minor adaption. What ever option you choose, important is you feel comfortable with the product and happy to have it beside you to use at any moment. QUOTE(kingkingyyk @ Jun 23 2016, 08:11 AM) Sony A6000? Yup, mirrorless are really nice .............But1. sometimes you still have to go with DSLR because till now no mirrorless is able to match DSLR in terms of AF speed + accuracy + battery life. 2. battery life sucks, that's the most major annoyance of mirrorless systems so far. 300 - 400 shots per battery. Total # shots gets much reduced if you chip a lot. |

Still go for the old workhorse or stay put with IPong. Others in the middle are waste of time.

QUOTE(Lego Warfare @ Jun 23 2016, 12:20 PM) Yeah, but the AF will be very slow for models without dual pixels. EVF also show the exposure compensation you made in real time and focus peaking. There are times where OVF is better though, i.e. motion tracking. That remains for DSLR directory. I feel mirrorless is the better choice in other fields. Have you ever encountered situation where you thought you have captured something after looking through viewfinder just to realised everything is pitch black because you forgot to set shutter speed from 1/4000? That is ovf and more likely to develop habit of constantly checking on live view after every shot. Evf less problem on that unless you just want to check sharpness.
However if you doing burst shot or on fast moving subject, ovf is superior. This post has been edited by DaddyO: Jun 23 2016, 01:55 PM |

EVF has improved a lot already. Last time, like my Fuji S7000 - wah EVF is so laggy.
Nowadays EVF is so good, the inexperienced will think they're viewing through OVF. |
