I am no expert, but I think for a beginner who are used to smartphone, you will love Canon 80d for the tilted touch screen and Dual pixel cmos AF during live view. If budget is a constraint, can go for a used 70D, almost equally good.

If you prefer a smaller body then do explore mirrorless system like Sony, Panasoinc, or Olympus..

some of these body will even allow you to use lens from yesterday body.. with minor adaption.

What ever option you choose, important is you feel comfortable with the product and happy to have it beside you to use at any moment. Popular votes does not equal to what you are comfortable with.. what you have invest in today if possible must be able to grow with your future needs unless you have deep pockets.

this one is ideal but usually not possible.

biggrin.gif If you are shooting same range, well good luck - your friend would likely be using his / her lens.

Want to borrow? If he / she is using or is a precious item, very unlikely you get to borrow.

In fact the above post isn't true at all because all you actually need to do is join a group of users with the same brand and go for outings.

You don't have to go with what your friends have because that's not the best way to go about. You should go with the brand YOU are comfortable with, in terms of ergonomics and interface.

What your friends using may not be the best choice for you.

Just buy the brand that you find you "click" best with and join group outings.

Many years ago we have LYN Photography group outing. biggrin.gif During those outings we often try out one another's lenses and camera. Poison session, even have makan session where cameras are all on the table.

@din66 - As ChinWY pointed out, have u thought of Mirrorless, smaller body but dslr quality. Example, Sony a6000 with kit lens, price is around 2.3k at the moment. Or Fujifilm XA2 that came with twin lenses package that cost around the same price. I tried carry a nikon d7000 in my bag but found that it was really big and bulky. Somemore, I find it quite intimidating pointing a big dslr at my friends for casual shots and they usually shy away especially when i topped it up with a nikon sb 700 flash. Since you are asking suggestion for a beginner dslr, I assume you simply want a camera that can take better picture than your smartphone/tablet. If I am right, I think you wont regret getting a mirrorless instead of a dslr. Quite a few friends I knew which started with a dslr has either replaced them with mirrorless or let their dslr sit on the shelf collecting dust. sweat.gif

Sony A6000? smile.gif You will feel bringing DSLR a burden after the hype. Mirrorless alleviates this problem by reducing the weight, size and increases the versatility, while maintaining the image quality.

Yup, mirrorless are really nice .............But

1. sometimes you still have to go with DSLR because till now no mirrorless is able to match DSLR in terms of AF speed + accuracy + battery life.

2. battery life sucks, that's the most major annoyance of mirrorless systems so far. 300 - 400 shots per battery. Total # shots gets much reduced if you chip a lot.

Still go for the old workhorse or stay put with IPong. Others in the middle are waste of time.

1) Yes... for moving subjects, the tracking AF is still better.
2) Extra battery or powerbank biggrin.gif

But the EVF is useful when you only can see pitch black from OVF... unsure.gif
