Economic activity didn't get shut down till about mid-march in USA, so I
don't think it will be that bad for Q1 but it will be really bad for Q2 'coz
a lot of state/cities were completely shut down in April.

In May, it's going to be a phase in approach to startup.

Expected GDP -5% for Q2.

But... if infection rates keep going down during summer months, then Q3 should be ok.

Q4 is really unknown, 'coz weather will be cold again and likely start of wave 2.
*
Cannot say cause look at Singapore. Weather so hot but infection like crazy.

I don't get the stock BA.  Facing so many hurdles since the 737max fiasco, and now much lower travels and orders being cancelled, and weak demands. This thing should not be over 100 at all.  hmm.gif

Power of the feds. People know govt going to bail it out. So why scared?

Hi,

I am going to use CGS CIMB, but first time buying US shares. I think the min USD25 brokerage is still quite high, but anyway, too lazy change platform and take new risks on foreign brokers or online platforms. I only have Maybank KE for sg investments, but the funds there are limited.

May I ask if you settle in MYR when you buy US shares? Does this give the best forex conversion?

How about when you sell, assuming that I want to keep USD in my trust account for future purchases, should I settle in USD?

I had posted this question in the iTrade thread but nobody replied so far.

Thanks in advance.

You will never get best forex rate if you use Malaysian broker. The truth hurts. Yes you will get back USD. Kindly checkout the page below for more info.

HK listed China big banks have good dividend, valuation is also low since many people don't trust china accounting. I've been receiving good dividend for about 10 years, so i don't care if accounting fake or not, as long as dividend comes steady.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing.

Given that if you are able to get $0 commission accounts nowadays, is it worthwhile to sell shares before ex-div date and buy it back after?
This avoids the 30% withholding tax.

It is a bit on the micromanagement side, and if you have a ton of different shares, it may be too troublesome.

Focusing on high dividend yield shares, theoretically, is this possible?

No doubt, the risk is that share go up in between the the dates you sell and you buy.
*
No cause not necessarily the stock will drop ex date.

I'm using a TD Ameritrade but now still not getting 0% commission. They actually moved Asian accounts to Singapore, so I'm not sure the 0% is applicable. Besides this TD Ameritrade, I'm not sure which US trading account that I can open here.

I sold some of my company shares (just in case Enron repeat, and I don't want my retirement depends solely one the company), and use the proceedings to buy other stocks. Yea, the whitholding tax is pretty heavy (in my case also in 4 digits per year), although I think we can still claim back some amount, but when I download the form, I almost  rclxub.gif . So I also give up  bye.gif
*
You can't claimed as Malaysia does not have tax treaty with US

Yup.

So far, it has scored another 3.169 millions job losses since last week and totaled approx 33 millions people out of job in US
the past 6 weeks... that's more than the housing market crash now but yet stock market continues to rise
due to liquidity (the banks and Fed) but it won't last that long because the underlying economy is rotting now.
A lot of the jobs may not be coming back anytime soon.

33 million people, if this is Malaysia.. we can see everyone become beggars on streets.  doh.gif

Let's get ready for the big short....  brows.gif

Additional unemployment benefits continue until June only I think. After June back to normal. Don't know where I read it.

QUOTE(AVFAN @ May 13 2020, 03:55 PM)
why is the stock market rallying when the economy is so bad?

many articles, comments...

but mostly these 3 reasons - govt intervention, hope for fast cure/vaccine, millions of young people now rushing into stocks.

sustainable? yet to see.... next 1, 3, 6 months.
*
I think the longer it goes the closer they are to a vaccine or drug.

In the mean time govt will do everything to support the market.

Do not use saxo. Bloody expensive. Fees left right center. Markup Forex conversion rates.

For sg stocks
FSM sg.
Tiger brokers if you are ok with China based broker with office in sg. It's the cheapest one for sg market.

For overseas
Trade station global (IBKR white label)

Tiger brokers on its website say has free real time stock quotes. Is this GLOBAL stocks free quote ? so its better then IB and tradestation global huh ?

done some research tiger brokers should be also a IBKR while label
*
Not necessarily. If it's whitelabels you can use the login details provided to login to IB. Unfortunately you can't. The login details only work on IB.

Tiger only offer US, SG, HK market.
Tradestation global have access to US, CA, EU, UK SG, HK, JP, AU.

For me I would not touch something from China especially when it comes to my money.

Not to mentioned there's some news saying it help Chinese citizen to invest overseas bypassing Beijing blockage (it's illegal for Chinese people to buy overseas stocks). If it's true sooner or later Beijing is gonna come knocking on their door. You don't want to mess with Beijing.

Nevermind, I figured it out. Lucky I never buy as the correct way to enter the symbol is RDS B. If not ended up buying crazy prices in pound, dutch or swiss franc.... and it is confirm ADR.
*
RDSB. The one in US is ADR and it comes with yearly ADR fees. HTe one in UK in pence (like malaysian se) but not ADR fees. 100p - Ipound

Yeah thanks. I guess if trade this share have to be adr since I don't like to trade in lse market due to pound conversion. Unless of course keeping long term. BTW do you know if I have no pound, will ib auto convert the currency usd to pound using the current market rate? Not sure what you meant by hte.

Anyway the key is the space, rds b. Just a precaution warning for those trading rdsb in the wrong market and inputing the price for wrong settlement currency.
*
They won't auto convert.

How much is 'a lot'?

USD100k cash and asset equivalent. I recommend USD200k for safety. Cause if portfolio drops by 50% it's still USD100k.

If you don't have USD100k in cash or asset, or don't generate trading commission of USD10/month, and don't intend to pay USD10/month recommend you to use tradestation global (whitelabels of IB).

QUOTE(LostAndFound @ Jul 27 2020, 03:19 PM)
Thanks for the info.

So for buy-and-hold like "just get some index fund units" not the best option in your opinion?
*
Not really.
I am a buy and hold guy and I use tradestation global as
1. I don't have USD100k cash or asset equivalent
2. I don't generate USD10/month in trading commission.
3. IB is fantastic as it gives me spot exchange rate (real time real rates for foreign currency conversion).
4. Commission is way cheaper compare to using local brokerage. Eg USD1.50/transaction vs USD25-50/transaction.

So yeah you can use IB even though you are buy and hold person.

Noni don't have ETF but I am buy and hold guy using whitelabels of IB to hold his stocks.

You can try Charles Schwab.

There are no fees to open or maintain your account. But there is a $1,000 investing minimum to start using the account.

No commissions for online equity, ETF or OTCBB trades.

Sell off charge 0.06. Some higher. But still penny cheap.
*
Wrong. You need USD25k to open account.
