Well, tons of things could affect the speed on wired connections as well. Cable length, Cable Type (Category 5e, Category 6), Cable Condition, Network Card, Router, etc. Even with wireless, depending on the device you are using (i.e. Smartphone or Laptop) and the distance to the AP/Router, the speeds might vary as well.
