Why?
Sharing Same Advantage, Sharing Same Disadvantage
Mage do Range Attack. Ranged Class do Range Attack
Mage LOW HP, Range Class LOW HP
Mage No Heavy Armor (except TIME), Archer No Heavy Armor.
While mostly true , but 2 of the best Magician combos came from pairing White Mage + Machinist & Red Mage + Archer
These cheesy little Mages can do up to 40k dmg with Scathe , Ardor and Holy spamming with the appropriate setups
To put it precisely , the Magic spells in this game have receive a MAJOR Improvement over the old FF12 .

Magic used to be Slow and Deal massive dmg in the previous version of FF12 .
most of the flashy endgame spells would have already reached the dmg limit ( 9999 ) cap and to make it worse, because of the PS2 technical limitation , a SPELL queue system was imposed , which prevent multiple High-End Magics spammings on screen simultaneously.
In this new version , all source of DMG can go over the 9999 limit now and with the removal of Spell-Queue system , you no longer have to wait to see that Flare and Holy spells on the same screen.
The Red Mage / Archer combo come in mind , while they are still not as good as a Black Mage/Monk counterpart , they are only good for 1 thing -
the Burning bow ( Amplify all Fire Dmg ) + Ardor
The Ardor + Burning bow allows Red Mage to deal the same dmg as a Scathe , the Ultimate Endgame spell you will be spamming as a Black Mage.
And unlike Scathe , Ardor is fire elemental spell . Which means its damage can be further amplified by casting OIL on enemies /bosses , surpass Scathe in raw Damage.
( Which is also its weakness , watch out for mobs with Fire Immunity )
Now moving onto the White Mage + Machinist combo , beside the great amount of HP nodes and consumable talent ,
the Machinist can learns Hastega , one of the most crucial and important buff for your characters .
This effectively making your White mage the Ultimate Buff Guy in the game , as you do not have to switch over to your Time Mage to buff the party or waste an accessory slot.
Your White Mage can also wield some of the end game Gun like Fomalhaut which can do some decent dmg without getting too close to the enemies .
If your white mage is one of the girls , she will most probably reach 99 MAG in their 70-80s where she no longer need to rely on Rod/Staff to boost her Mag
