programmes such as nero vision, is there a way to enlarge the viewing space whereby after converting, the amount of video that we see can actualy be enlarged instead of jus a small strip of video ie only a small portion of the tv being used?

Dun get ur question. What small strip?
You mean from 16:9 to 4:3 i presume?
Basically, there's no way u can convert to 4:3 without losing info. You don't need to rip or do anything like that. Just configure ur media player to zoom in full screen, but you'll lose your picture on both side. Alternatively, you can squeeze the 16:9 to full 4:3 by elongating the picture...that is if you like funny looking thin tall people...
