Hi mates, I came across a Sorento 2.2 HS diesel (2017) for sale. The owner planned to sell it at a price to cover his remaining loan which amounted to ~RM93k. Still under warranty till May 2022. Tip top condition but the mileage is a bit high at 160k km. My concerns are as followed:-
1. Any known issues especially the major ones for this model?
2. For the high mileage, is there anything that I need to be awared of in terms of wear and tear and big ticket item?
3. How's the maintenance and spare part cost like for this model?
4. Is it worth it at RM93k?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers! icon_question.gif

P/S: Here is the reference to the model just in case from Paul Tan's site:) - https://[<link removed>]/2017/04/25/kia-sorento-high-spec-diesel-in-malaysia-rm191888/

For a 4 years car the mileage is a bit high. Though a diesel engine will normally last more than 300,000km I still have some reserve to recommend it. Maybe nego for a further few k.

Diesel sorento does not have much "problems", however other than some minor issue with turbo actuator and EPB, I have not heard too much about other parts.

Common wear and tear
(1) brake pad, and disc rotor for every 2 brake pads replacement.
(2) auto rear boot button (locate at tailgate). The replacement is less than RM300, each one can last 3-5 years.

Kgc = kia grand carnival.

Petrol vs diesel
Pros of petrol
Car cheaper to buy. Diesel more expensive.
Car battery cheaper. Maintenance may be cheaper.
Can use Ron 95. Diesel recommended euro 5.

Pros of diesel
Way powerful than petrol. 9 sec 0 to 100. Huge torque. Useful for stop start traffic and overtake. My suprima also kalah with this car. 400 nm torque. Theee is this guy overseas who uses his sorento to play tug of war with hilux with lorry. His sorento win all. Got videos online.
Get better mpg due to diesel
8spd transmission. Petrol only 6 spd.
No need to rev engine hard to get power. Nature of diesel engine. More refined than petrol.
Most of the units sold are diesel iinm.
Mileage for long distances can get up to almost 1k km per full tank. My personal record is 960 km for full tank. If stick to national speed limit can get near the 1k mark. I drove from KL to batu pahat to kota Bharu on one tank. Technically can reach kb, but stopped at pasir Puteh since that was the only place at that time with e5 diesel. I refuel 4-6 weeks once since my daily commute is about 20+ km whole day.

That is what I remember on top of my head. The rest can ask in the fb group. Also please test drive it. You will get a better picture of the car. Then can do the math. At that price, what are your options. I cannot think of any other more value for money 7 seater suv.
New santa fe is more expensive. Slight better than sorento. Same engine. Not sure if it is worth the extra 10k++.
Outlander not refined. Poor interior layout. Has better off road capability. Petrol engine. Can topup anywhere.
Xtrail, 3rd row unusable to adults. Plastic interior. It is the cheapest though. Petrol. Xtrail exterior looks good though.
Fortuner, best off road capability, not refined on roads. Also fortuner too high. If you have old parents, they are not going to like that step ladder. If you are the type masuk kebun all the time then worth it. Can use normal diesel. Ladder frame. Fortuner seats fold to the side of the window if not mistaken. Fortuner more expensive.
Isuzu mu-x. Plastics interior. Not refined. Great off-road capabilities. With on the fly transmission selection. 3rd row good for adults. But seats in the last row don't fold flat. To raise the floor so adults will be comfortable. Also high vehicle. Can use normal diesel. Same class like fortuner. Ladder frame if not mistaken.

So depending on on your usage, sorento santa fe one class. Xtrail outlander another. Fortuner mux another. Also note that kia is no Toyota. Parts are there, hard to find oem.

If you stay in pedalaman or estate areas, maybe fortuner mux better choice. Budget people might want the outlander xtrail. Comfort good nvh and sophisticated interior might want santa fe sorento. When I bought the car, only one out of more than 10 people could tell it was diesel. The rest thought it was petrol. This is standing from outside while car running.

Since the gomen introduced the b10 diesel, I see more fortuner, Ford hilux fill e5. Even though they can use the lower grade fuel. My neighbour said that he save at least RM 20 when doing long distances with e5 in his pickup. Also engine quieter.

I am confident of the 2.2 d engine since my neighbour using the same engine in his 8 year old santa fe. Still going strong. No issues

I've tested the 2nd hand 2.4 HS 2018 model. The driving was not bad, doesn't feel sluggish. Only rear absorber on the driver side got leaking signage. Otber than that. The car was good. But my main target was to get the 2nd hand 2.2D HS version but very difficult to find one. How was your 2.2D ride until now? Any major repairs done so far since you bought the car? If yes, may I know the cost? Thank you.

Last night I checked mudah, shocked to see see only 3 diesels on sale. Can understand why. Very reliable car. Fc highway like 6l/100 km for diesel if stick to speed limit. X90 hybrid only 6.8l. 6.8l =160 km drive.

Ride good. Can autocruise at 160 km confidently on highway. 160km = 110km other cars. 110km like 80 km.

Repairs. Claims warranty for wear and tear items. Rubber boot opening. I now spray silicone there as finish 5 year warranty. Ac condensor leaking. Warranty. Front door passenger switch, warranty. Things to look out for for in future, EPB motor failure (all cars with EPB need to replace the motor or fix motor). I just recently paid 300+ for engine sendiri) sensor faulty. Waiting for for part to arrived in 5 days. Suspension still good on mine, though this is wear and tear item. Eventually will need to be replaced. Changed front brake pads 20k km ago. Rear brake pads still good. I just went and bought the rear as well, in case. Battery agm, this one rm1k+-. Can use normal battery but life expectancy is lower since auto start stop. Half the time of agm battery, price also half of agm battery.

Aside from door switch android folding mirroring claim. Rest considered wearing and tear. Engine oil is 7l for diesel. What's you save in fc, need to pay a bit in engine oil. Though fc will ultimately be cheaper as not everyday you change engine oil. Other owner's change drl as drl faulty, not common though.

I will consider selling it 2 years from now, if something good value arrives in the market. However owners in the wa group all have headache to replace car. Some went to merc, some to kgc. Others stick to car. Also got some new 2nd hand owners in group as well. All owners face same dilemma. Naza sold us the car damm cheap compared to bermaz. The new model so expensive. 70k more expensive. If you get a new car, either pay a lot or downgrade model. Cost of maintaining the car is rm1.1k/months at sc on average. If got 3rd party sc, even better. Cheaper really. In kelantan, no option.
