I want to ask about the Kodi which resides in android tv boxes, are they special built or they are just "normal" ones ?

The reason I am asking about this is that I have a MXQ pro+ which comes with Kodi 17.3 ( armeabiv7 ). I tried to "dirty" flash over using a Kodi 17.4 but it attempted to install but failed. So I figure that I might have to backup, uninstall and install new version and then restore the configuration from the backup.

But before I do that, I want to make sure these builds of Kodi on these devices, are there anything special ? I don't want to be landed in a case where I ended up with unable to install Kodi 17.4 or installed a limping version after I uninstalled the older version.

It could be the Kodi has been customized and the signature changed. Have u try both 32-bit and 64-bit APK installer? Most of china box is running on 32-bit.
*
Care to give some guess reasons why an application like Kodi needs to be customized ? What is it they have done to the app ?

No idea bro. confused.gif

Try sideload both bit of the apk.
*
Already tried and confirmed that only 32bit apps can be installed but for this Kodi, it can't be installed over via google play or package installer.

I could use a more forceful method to install ( such as uninstall first ) but I am afraid of losing features which the firmware developer has incorporated inside the customized Kodi.

try to establish if indeed the kodi is customized or not and if so, and what advantages u will lose if u use common version.

afaik, most are not customized.

both my devices, 17.0 onwards, all updates till 17.4 now have been auto, need not do anything.
*
I have confirmed the apk which comes with the firmware vs the one downloaded from official website, they are signed by different entities.

jarsigner -verify -verbose kodi_xxx.apk.

Anyone made Kodi the autostart program in their TV BOX, ie when the box is powered up, we see the Kodi opened and running instead of the TV BOX launcher ? Any problem encountered ?

normally because u turn off the Android Tv after watching some drma/ movie from kodi.
so when ON back = kodi inside already.
right?
*
That's not a true power off.

When you use the button on the remote to 'power off' the tv box, it is normally put in a suspend mode. 'Power on' on the remote is normally just a resume function.

When you power off the tv box ( eg power off on the AC switch ), it will bring you back to the launcher screen instead of Kodi.

If some oldies are the users of tv box, they might have problem getting back to Kodi again.

Typically the default skins. Confluence for Jarvis and below... Estuary for Krypton and above. I run Amber or Aeon Nox on Krypton V17.4 with no hassles, cuz the device can handle a heavier skin. Stick to the default skins on slower or not-Kodi friendly devices.
*
I thought the skin design is kind of weird. There is a favourites folder but the folder is listed at the bottom ( or near bottom ) of the left panel and there is no way of changing the order of it appearing. For me, if it is favourites, it should appear at the top of the list. blink.gif

Off topic.. a good remote app that can be installed onto your android phone paired to your boxes to control instead of using your std remote.. good for those who use often to search and need to type
*
Install the same app on both ends ? What is needed on the 'server' ?

No bro, only need installed on your mobile and paired it via Bluetooth to your box and good to go

This app does not use bluetooth at all.

It seems to use the IR interface and the wifi.

There is incompatibility with my box. When switching to mouse/touch pad mode, the app will trigger a reboot when I tap on the screen.

Didn't try it myself.. But according to the Play Store, it uses WiFi and or Bluetooth. So for WiFi, both devices have to be connected to the same network to work.. Compatibility, we'll that's another issue. It not having a dedicated server running on the device to smoothen things out (comms between device) may be a contributing factor... For Kodi users, the official Kodi Kore remote is available. Limited to the Kodi app alone.
*
The play store does not even mention anything about bluetooth. Search the web page, there is only one instance of "bluetooth" in the webpage, but there is in the context of a user feedback mentioning that, after having this app, "No need to purchase any of those Bluetooth wireless touch pads".

Just go ahead to disable the bluetooth on the tvbox, instantly we can see that bluetooth is simply not needed.

Another thing is "searching server ....." thingie is just a waste of time, it did not manage to locate any server within the time ( possibly it is doing a one-by-one test within the subnet or sending IR code to detect compatible tvbox ).

The search result is always empty. Finally users still have to manually enter the IP address of the tv box to get things working.

Ok, as i mentioned it does requires pairing between the Android phone and the box via Bluetooth. Once paired one is able to navigate even on the home screen, not just in Kodi which is even better than Kore.

I tried switching off the Bluetooth at the phone and it doesn't work. I paired them once and able to navigate just now when I switched on the box to confirmed the above.

Not that it is important, and i wouldn't use this app anyway. But for academic reason, let's continue this discussion. Here there is a video :-

We are talking about the same app, right ?

Guys, is there any setup/tweak that i can do to fix video buffering/stutter.
I'm using Unifi 50mbps, latest Kodi and stream source from Covenant.

Thank you.
*
It's probably not within your control. You can only fix things within your control, such as congestion due to too many users in your house, or poor wifi connection, too many apps running in your tv box, too many ads, etc.

There are many of other reasons beyond your control.

How about a general type of setting?

My Android TV Box has 8GB RAM and it's still buffering. It is streaming over wifi and I understand that some buffering will be expected for this. However, I read that Kodi is designed to run on low spec devices so maybe some default setting on Kodi can be changed to take advantage on devices with more RAM? Not sure where this setting is though.

The issue for me is not so much the buffering but to see if my Kodi is optimized for the hardware it has~

Any comments are appreciated.  cool2.gif

Beyond all these, you don't know what is the actual reasons for buffering. It could very likely due to the free websites have poor bandwidth available.

Not working in Kodi but still working in RSS player. Seems it's better to use RSS player, let prone to disruption.

Okay looks like there is a need for a thread on RSS player. Otherwise the Kodi people are going to make noise if we discuss too much of RSS player here. sweat.gif

thanks, but ic drama in rss also down, i am using hkfree.co in rss. working.

I have no problem using RSS player for ICDRama when connected to Unifi and Umobile upstream. I have problem however when I used a different ISP, which I wasn't sure it is due to the ISP or the firewall.

Looks to me different service provider can cause Ads to pop up differently and that causes some difficulty for Add On or Apps to handle them correctly.

Please share your hkfree.co config so I can also configure it into RSS player, in case having problem with existing config. No harm having additional spare config.

found the culprit, apparently i just changed internet provider (TIME) and the router settings on the LAN that connected to the box is label with IPTV. I have change it to internet and its settled!!

Wonder the IPTV option is for what purpose on the router settings hmm.gif
*
I am guessing:-

Internet is normally based on best effort, fair competition or highway congestion type.

IPTV is probably dedicated path with minimum QoS guarantee type of connection.

But I am not knowledgible enough about the market if any service provider is providing this kind of IP connection to subscribers.
