Hi Everybody
I want to get the RT-AC5300 but I like to know which dsl modem to connect to the internet. Too bad Muar does not have Unifi; only Streamyx.
If possible: 1. What is opinion of RT-AC5300 2. What band and model that works well with this router.
Thanks so much.

I will buy the Asus DSL-AC68U instead - modem+router together, less hassle, save electricity with 1 less device. Currently using the Asus DSL-N55U, very satisfied with it.

Hi Thanks for the prompt reply. I do admit that AC5300 is very much an overkill for Streamyx but I am considering this because the price I can get for this unit is very very attractive, really not much more than Asus DSL-AC68U
Regards

You want to bridge your "streamyx" modem with this beast? with streamyx 8mbps to bridge your modem with this Tri-band router 1000+2167+2167 Mbps. May I know how many people that you want to connect with this router? 100 devices to connect? with just a 8mbps internet connection?

If you get a cheap modem to pair with it, then the modem will become bottleneck. If you get a good modem/router like the DSL-AC68U to pair with it, then the AC5300 become redundant.

I advise not to get DSL-AC68U. That is a very bad choice, especially at that price point. DSL modem router support generally is very poor compared to the similar spec router-only from the same brand. It is less popular, so it will get lesser priority for bugfix support. If you have some issues that is not basic functionality or common, it may sometimes not even fixed or take very long for a fix to be available. DSL modem are closed source, so there there won't be alternative third party firmware available. Just get a decent wifi router & a basic DSL modem. Lower risk of the expensive wifi router being damaged by voltage spikes in the phone line. But won't prevent damages if direct lightning hit though.

I would advise either stick to the stock router/modem in one or buy a asus router/modem in one. AC5300 is overkill and brings no benefit at all if u are using streamyx. btw, what price can u get for the ac5300?

If you have a NAS (or multiple NAS) with > 150MB/s total transfer rate, with multiple MU-MIMO wireless client accessing it, then it is a valid reason. If you only have wave 1 AC clients, then you will not be even close to fully utilise AC5300. You will need multiple, probably > 4 wave 2 AC clients concurrently transferring data to even fully utilise the bandwidth potential of it. But it is very nice to use in office environment, especially for users with ultrabooks without built-in lan port & have to use those usb3 gigabit lan adapters just to transfer large files from the storage server.

I'm currently using Asus RT-AC87U with a D-Link DSL-520B. No problem. Overall improved network performance. Very useful for streaming stuff from my NAS to my devices. Average devices on my network is around 16-20 devices at the same time.

The best practice for any home network is to have the internet modem separated from the wireless router not the all in one routers. Based on my experience, its quite a hassle and costly to replace and setup these all in one routers if anything should happen to the router especially if the router is struck by lightning via the telephone line. I had to replace my all in one routers at least 2 times in a year for the past few years because of this. Now when I separate the two, replacing the internet modem is a mere RM50-RM60 and I can easily upgrade the main wireless router whenever the need comes. For your case, it depends on what kind of devices you use on the network as well as the number of devices. RT-5300 is definitely the best router router and will future-proof your home when faster broadband becomes available. You can use both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz devices(any device) with this router.

There is no future proof such things, since by the time when u are ready with hsbb, the manufacturer may already phase out the old model and introduce some new model with more powerful feature n cheaper price tag to replace it.
So, u should get what you can afford when you need it.

Set PPPOE mode, then change the ADSL modem to bridge mode.

Hello experts. Can I use D-Link DIR-880L router with Streamyx and connect the D-Link DIR-880L with the house modem given by TM? Currently on 4mbps Streamyx. Looking to upgrade to 8Mb. Unifi isn't available at my area. Thanks for your advise.
