Hi /k/.

So yesterday I went to Pudu Sentral there to renew my passport lahh.

Then after that got NBTD so I went to Midvalley to survey engagement rings.

I am planning to propose by the end of this year!!

Went to a few common jewellers like Wah Chan, Poh Kong and Goldheart and this is what I found.

Wah Chan:
0.70 E VVS2 3EX GIA RM25,000.

Goldheart:
0.5 D VS2 3EX GIA RM16,000.
0.62 I VVS1 3EX AGS RM14,000.

Tomei:
0.71 E VS2 3EX GIA RM31,000.

Poh Kong:
0.59 E IF 3EX IGI RM21,000.
0.70 F VS2 3EX GIA RM22,000.

All the above are diamond + casing.

The casing got designs with side stones one, not solitaire.

Price wise, only Wah Chan can nego.

The rest is a big firm NETT.

I remember last time /k/ got one tered which says Wah Chan punya price can nego sampai jadi wan wohh until 60% also got.

True ahh?

Any /k/tards got experience buying engagement ring?

Please come share share tips!!

So I think she deserves it.

Engaged liao bukannya immediately marry wan mahh.

Engagement rings of that size are expensive in Malaysia. Take your gf for a holiday, buy in HK or SG, both are cheaper.

Side casing gems are basicly worth nothing...it depends on the wearer and viewer...SOME ppl LOVE it..ooo ahhh...so many gems. Some think its cheap. For me the classic single large stone is always the nicest, dont worry about so much about the stones spec, and be conned into paying more...get what YOU like the look of. Usually you cant go wrong with a slightly larger stone with lower spec. 99% of ppl cant tell the diff between stones with diffrent spec colour/inclusions etc...but they can tell the diff in size and cut.

I got my ring in HK, my brother went to SG...and shit...prices have increased SO MUCH. i got my 1.1 carat 8 years ago for 12k..he got his for 20k+ just 8 years diffrence.

There are a lot of online diamond retailers out there bro.

Some big big ones are Blue Nile, James Allen and Whiteflash.

I chose James Allen cuz they provide a 360-degree view of their diamonds.

So you can clearly see the clarity characteristics of your stone.

Try it:
www.jamesallen.com.

But there is a drawback for you guys lar.

All of them do not deliver to Malaysia.

Yes. Budget. I'm assuming since you're considering such rings you can afford it, so here goes: For RM20k can easily get very nice diamond rings, even from premium brands. Any preference on the 4Cs?

There are a lot of online diamond retailers out there bro.

Some big big ones are Blue Nile, James Allen and Whiteflash.

I chose James Allen cuz they provide a 360-degree view of their diamonds.

So you can clearly see the clarity characteristics of your stone.

Try it:
www.jamesallen.com.

But there is a drawback for you guys lar.

All of them do not deliver to Malaysia.

Tell her:

Take RM5k for wedding ring, balance RM15-20k put into FD under her name
Then plot the savings after 20 years, show her and say that is hers to use

Then ask her decide whether she still wants the ring or not.
My gf gave me a cap when I buy ring, cannot be more expensive than RMxxxx. I'm glad she's smart. In end what I did is to design my own ring, so her ring is one and only of its kind in the world, and she values that more than a big rock.

I'll tell you a secret tho. Sometimes its the guy that wants to buy the bigger rock, to show off and stroke their ego. Its true. Don't fall for that.

James Allen sendiri got this service one.

You can choose the setting you like based on the 360-degree rotating image too.

But I did a price survey and the price of their settings are CRAZY!

So what I did was I bought the stone online then engage a local jeweller for the setting.

Quite good the workmanship.

Here see my tered on this topic:

I'm going through the process now bro.

Fairy tale wedding is encouraged by unrealistic expectations, and that is encouraged by media, family and friends whom does not know how damaging a wedding can be. Almost all, if not all of my friends who have done wedding before discourages spending too much in a wedding. Why pay RM140k for an "once in a lifetime" even that only lasts for like 4-8 hours?

Even if you use RM70k and have RM70k balance, you can have several in a life time trips overseas and enjoy your marriage more.

I know you mean well, and I know it will take time for your gf to grow up and understand it, and perhaps even take some time for you to put your ego aside cause you might feel compelled to prove to the world that you are capable in that sense, but if two make decisions purely base on logic, and if your goal is long term happiness, the answers are bloody clear cut. I'm not asking you to save that RM70k and throw it into car mods or whatever, but those money can provide you two with longer term happiness than put into 4-8hrs of stuff that you two wont' even be able to enjoy fully cause you'll be stressed on that day.

Actually the reception isn't too bad because people will bring their angpows, and usually unless you spend extravagantly, you can recover from the reception.
The main ones will be pre-wed photos, videography, engagement ring, etc.

I wish you all the best in your engagement and subsequent marriage bro, but I'll still hope that eventually you and your gf will put that money into better use.
Don't get fooled by the diamond industry. Many Gen Y and Z people are slowly waking up to this, and I hope you and her will eventually do too. Even putting RM25k into gold bars and giving her that is a better choice than putting into diamonds.

If you insist on the diamond, market price now is approx RM18.5k for triple EX, Colour E, Clarity VVS2 0.7 carat

Go low on clarity, middle on colour and high on carat to maximize your value. Triple EX and cert is must.

This is a good place to know market price:
http://audreys.com.my/audreys/diamondsearch.php

They sell wholesale, and you can order and pay deposit and they will bring to a physical shop to set it.
Alternatively, you can consider buying online too. As long as got GIA cert it'll be fine, but make sure from reputable companies and they insure the package.

I don't wanna pay a premium price just for the brand.

For RM25,000, I can get a 0.70 stone at Wah Chan but maybe only a 0.50 one at DeGem or Tiffany.

So no thanks bro.

Once in a lifetime... What a classic marketing slogan. Try to shop around more, Habib, degem, Tiffany. In some, they have their own unique brand of diamonds which are cut differently for that extra bling and uniqueness.

But I have to applaud to the guy here who design the ring himself and did it àt a reasonable price now that is once a lifetime and one and only. That's very thoughtful and takes effort and heart. Love it

Colour E is quote good already. It starts with D ma.
I feel anything at F or G is still OK.

Clarity: Can only be seen clearly with loupe or magnifying glass. Hard to see even when compared
Colour: Hard to see with naked eyes unless she is super sensitive to white/yellow shades. Only easy to see when compared with another one's
Carat: Easiest to see with naked eyes whether big or small

So allocate more cost on carat, followed by colour followed by clarity.
This is how you can maximize your value.

Of course if your GF is super sensitive to colour, then you adjust accordingly, but the above general rule is applicable for the masses.

For any diamond above 0.2-0.3carat until about 1 carat, I follow:

Cert > Cut > Carat > Colour > Clarity

More than 1 carat, might need to be careful with clarity as it is easier to be seen with naked eyes

James Allen sendiri got this service one.

You can choose the setting you like based on the 360-degree rotating image too.

But I did a price survey and the price of their settings are CRAZY!

So what I did was I bought the stone online then engage a local jeweller for the setting.

Quite good the workmanship.

lol. I have 5k waiting for the account and another 30k in savings but I die die don't wanna touch those money. hence why I want ezypay plus she's not getting any younger man. it's now or next year.

plus those money is for my home furnishings and I can't depend on my dad for my wedding plus I need to save up in case he falls sick. he doesn't have insurance. everything I plan. hence why i ask bro

bb100 just one advice that I think you probably know, certification MUST be done by those reputable agency (GIA etc). Any jeweler that sell you cheap diamond with "in house certification" 99% cannot trust one.

James Allen allows me to "view" my diamonds from their website, something which the other online retailers don't have.

This viewing is important for me to determine if the stone is eye clean.

Just a note : Certification can be requested at reputable jeweller. U can ask them to sent ur gems for certification center of ur choosing.

For me personally, anything 0.5 ct with clarity VVS1 above is way to go. Brilliant cut. Some even 1 ct not good cut u dont see the cone shape reflection, looks like glass.

And, IF u really care about resale value then go 1 carat and above (unlikely). If not nearer to 1 carat is good enough. 0.8-0.9. Your girlfie wont notice the 0.1 discrepancy. To naked eye, 0.8+ - 0.9 almost as bug as 1 ct. U can just round it up as 1 ct lel and save alot of cash.

Yea.

According to the jewellers which I asked, they have two certs for diamonds above 0.30 carats.

GIA + in-house.

Suen previously is carat club so its kinda reputable. You can also check the laser engrave code at the girdle to ensure its the same diamond.

Try look at A Cut Above collection which they do provide ASET and Idealscope images so you'll know what u r getting. The only downside is you have to use wire transfer to purchase and I did it via Maybank. Above 2k usd have $25 rebate for first time buyers hahaha. Their settings are a litle expensive after conversion hence I don't buy from there tongue.gif

TS... and all you potential grooms... Please do not spend unnecessarily. I find all women have this fake fantasy about their marriage proposal needing to be perfect with the perfect size ring... unless you have been using money to get your girl... I think proposal is the perfect test of whether the girl is right for you on the long term. I am not saying dun indulge... If you have the means for it... by all means go for the expensive rock... but if you are smart, your funds should be placed towards building a future together and not incur so much debt and expenses even before getting married... and when you all get married the debt will put a heavy tol on your relationship. If she is so willing to forego marrying you over a silly rock that does not even hold its value over time.. then it is better to let her go... My 2 cents for all you youngsters... I have gone thru all the hoos-haas of marriage and proposal... and I can say that many people at that point of time cannot think past the wedding event... your real problems starts after saying I do... so best is not add more potential problems till then...

When you two look back after a few years of getting married, are you able to happily recall the day which you got down on your knees and pop the 4-word question?

My girlfie's circle of friends more or less have you that kinda mindset.

After a few years of marriage, the wife confessed to my girlfie: How I wished my husband gave me a proper marriage proposal with flowers, a diamond ring and such, like those in fairytales.

Of course lahh she did not tell her husband lohh.

So you see?

Why want your future wife to have that kind of regret in life?

Yes, all girls definitely want their fantasy proposal.. but do it at a cost within your means... I have seen too many unreasonable girlfriends demanding more than what the groom should do... I am not saying to do the same thing as me... I am asking to consider your budget first and work around it only. My example of the Rm500 ring was to show, if the girl loves you enough and shares a common understanding and goal with you enough, the actions and thought is more than enough. Of cos, if you are driving a Porsche and live in big bungalow houses with 6-7 figure salary.. dun go getting a RM500 ring lar... embarrass yourself only...

Another thing... of cos, I did not rely on only a RM500 ring to proposed lar... there was an elaborated effort to surprise her and all, but all within a limited budget. I did not splurge on her and I still do not until today.

OK let me make one thing clear bro.

She did not demand that I need to have at least how big a diamond to propose or how grand a proposal.

It is all my idea cuz she deserves it after waiting for me for nearly 10 years.

I go for that size and price cuz it's within my budget after considering that we won't be having any wedding reception and photoshoot.

She was the one who suggested that we go for wedding vacation and be our own photographer.

If no wedding dinner and all those then i think can buy slightly more expensive but personally i wont spend more than RM10k.
I'll buy a loose diamond and customize it. Saw an online gem website based in Bukit Bintang where their diamonds are all GIA rated. Forgot what they are called though.

As mentioned earlier, Cartier, DeGem, Tiffany and all these so called "branded" engagement rings are more expensive just because of the brand name.

Even if I have a few more thousand to splurge on the ring I also won't go for these brands.

RM10,000 can buy you a 0.50 carat stone in Wah Chan for example, but can only manage to get you a 0.30 carat diamond in Cartier.

What's the point?

Your wife put it on people will not know if it is from Cartier or Wah Chan.

They will only notice the size of that shining thing.

If no wedding dinner and all those then i think can buy slightly more expensive but personally i wont spend more than RM10k.
I'll buy a loose diamond and customize it. Saw an online gem website based in Bukit Bintang where their diamonds are all GIA rated. Forgot what they are called though.
*
So you suggest buying loose diamond and design the setting is it?

That was my initial plan.

I got a lobang for a 0.70 E VVS2 3EX GIA stone for RM10,000 and custom setting for like RM3,000.

Then I remembered somewhere in /k/ got people mention before Wah Chan punya price can nego until let go.

So that's why I go and survey a bit.

Good for your bro... If she did not demand from you but you are all well and willing while still within your means then it is a perfect fit... smile.gif

Audreys is legit there are alot of recoomendations as well. However their website needs ppl to choose the diamond and then purchase and collect from their store? Cant see the diamond its hard to decide based on GIA specs only.

Price for diamond not bad. Setting price also bout 2k for simple design.

Let me clarify something.

I just completed my PhD and now earning sing dollar as a scientist.

Since the day I left home for my first degree, I never asked my parents to pay for my stuffs, including my education.

PTPTN converted my loan into a scholarship and NUS paid for my PhD.

So yea, kalau tak tau jangan anyhow say.

Thanks.
