here's a list of questions frequently asked by SPM/STPM leavers from last year alone. i've tried to sort them out into categories: before, during and after studies. but these have not been fine tuned, as i'm looking for a more questions that may have been asked to or by any of u in relation to this matter. also, there might also be questions on issues that nobody have even though about. so if u have such questions, please list them here.
what i plan to do is to compile a list of FAQs to accompany the "guide to studying architecture" that i've written. the target is the next batch of students (2008), currently sitting for SPM and STPM. obviously i've been asked the same questions too many times already, so setting up a FAQ would be in my health's best interest so here goes: Architecture FAQs 1.0. Erm, just asking for your opinion on laptops. I mean, is there any special specs that is needed in a laptop for architecture. As what I understand, architecture students use laptops a lot. So is there anything to look for in getting a lappie?

Is really hard for me to use studio max or autocad with small screen.. |

So is there anything to look for in getting a lappie? although architecture may prefer desktops bcoz of performance and price, some do prefer laptops bcoz of mobility and security, despite being a tad more expensive that a desktop with similar spec. in choosing a laptop, i'd recommend one that can play a good 3D FPS game. if the laptop could sustain current 3D games, it should be able to fulfill all architectural needs. |

I was wondering if you would recommend a Mac instead of a Windows based platform for purposes indicated by serenity? although architecture may prefer desktops bcoz of performance and price, some do prefer laptops bcoz of mobility and security, despite being a tad more expensive that a desktop with similar spec. in choosing a laptop, i'd recommend one that can play a good 3D FPS game. if the laptop could sustain current 3D games, it should be able to fulfill all architectural needs. |

What are the questions I should be asking myself to be interested in Architecture?
In other words; How to know if Architecture is for me, or not for me. This post has been edited by Benjamin911: Dec 5 2007, 11:14 PM |

When I talked about Architecture to my course adviser, he asked me whether do I really like to draw a lot. Well, I told him that I do not like to draw. He then told me that if I want to study Architecture, I need to really like drawing a lot; because I would be drawing a lot in Architecture.

QUOTE(KVReninem @ Dec 6 2007, 03:17 AM) i'll get back to this later QUOTE(Benjamin911 @ Dec 5 2007, 02:53 PM) What are the questions I should be asking myself to be interested in Architecture? He then told me that if I want to study Architecture, I need to really like drawing a lot; because I would be drawing a lot in Architecture. hey there ben.to answer ur first question is one of the most popular paradoxes in the architecture realm. u can only really know that u like architecture if u've been through it. but how do u decide if u like architecture without going through it? hhmmm.... but what i can tell u for sure is that architecture needs PASSION. alot. this is ur primary motivator during studies and practice, without it u'll be drifting in limbo, not really sure what to do or whether architecture is really for u or not. the passion could be derived from drawing, love for art, that adrenaline rush during submissions, producing mind boggling end products, design and so on. simply put, everyone has their own passion in architecture, it just a matter where u hook ur interest in. so ur course advisor is half correct. u could place ur passion in drawing, but drawing is only one portion of what architecture is all about. in architecture, drawing is a communication skill to put down what's in ur head on paper. but that's not the only way to do that. u can write, make a model or produce a computer model/drawing. ofcourse, the ability to draw would give u a boost compared to other students, but drawing is only half the fight. take it from me, drawing used to be my passion. however, in architecture, drawing becomes work. it immediately put me off, and i had to find some other passion to break away from being pulled down by that. hey, it's nothing bad being able to love what u're doing, but when hobby becomes work, how the heck are u supposed to rest? draw more? hahahaa. my point is, u dont have to like to draw, but being able to draw is a bonus. u'll be drawing quiet alot, but that's only if u dont have any other ways to communicate what's in ur head on paper. |

QUOTE hey there ben. That sounds really interesting and encouraging indeed. to answer ur first question is one of the most popular paradoxes in the architecture realm. u can only really know that u like architecture if u've been through it. but how do u decide if u like architecture without going through it? hhmmm.... hmm.gif but what i can tell u for sure is that architecture needs PASSION. alot. this is ur primary motivator during studies and practice, without it u'll be drifting in limbo, not really sure what to do or whether architecture is really for u or not. the passion could be derived from drawing, love for art, that adrenaline rush during submissions, producing mind boggling end products, design and so on. simply put, everyone has their own passion in architecture, it just a matter where u hook ur interest in. so ur course advisor is half correct. u could place ur passion in drawing, but drawing is only one portion of what architecture is all about. in architecture, drawing is a communication skill to put down what's in ur head on paper. but that's not the only way to do that. u can write, make a model or produce a computer model/drawing. ofcourse, the ability to draw would give u a boost compared to other students, but drawing is only half the fight. take it from me, drawing used to be my passion. however, in architecture, drawing becomes work. it immediately put me off, and i had to find some other passion to break away from being pulled down by that. hey, it's nothing bad being able to love what u're doing, but when hobby becomes work, how the heck are u supposed to rest? draw more? hahahaa. my point is, u dont have to like to draw, but being able to draw is a bonus. u'll be drawing quiet alot, but that's only if u dont have any other ways to communicate what's in ur head on paper. In my mind, I have the vision and ambition to design a building of my style and logic........I know that drawing is just a "Tool" to get the idea out on paper... (Nevertheless, I also understand the logic that, in the very first place, I also need to first be able to draw out the idea & concept of the building on paper right?) I have to be honest that I do not really like to draw that much though...BUT I really have the passion and interest for "Design Skill" (Attempting to place everything in their right form to form a perfect system am I right?), and to "Think/Imagine" [Start Designing] a building in my mind that may have to be exposed later on... Hmmm...I have always been interested in Architecture... BTW, are there universities in Malaysia that focuses more on the "technical" aspects of Architecture? (Currently, I have Taylor's College U.S.J. in mind for studying Architecture...Would it be a recommended place for pursuing Architecture studies?) I am just curious and inquiring about Architecture only. EDIT: Oh yeah, I would also like to know what is Taylor's College U.S.J. school of Architecture focusing more towards.
