Hi Sifus, i need some advise about auto focus mode.

Currently i'm doing freelance for wedding actual day job, always use for AF-one shot mode but found some of the photo is oof when i pre-focus and re-composition.

Any idea to solve this? Thanks in advance biggrin.gif

What lens used, focal length and aperture? Was the subject moving? Whats the shutter spèed?

Very narrow dof lens can produce blur even if you recompose after AF. To mitigate that theres a recompose technique that move in parallel with the dof plane than just swinging your camera.

Before sending for repair if any, try do some test shots on static subject on tripod to check. If ok, then perhaps its just you.

Was using Canon 24-70mm F2.8 MK1, will try some test shot to find out the problem again smile.gif

some reviewer suggested not to put any filter in front of the lens.
*
Filter too. The cheap ones especially gives soft image.

object not moving but i just focus and re-compose.

I suspect is the back light problem now

Just curious. The picture with the focus and recompose, what shutter speed and aperture you using? Be better if you got the blurry sample shots.

Have you test out the camera on tripod anyway?

Hey guys, i'm in the market of buying a prime lens (currently eyeing Canon's 50mm F1.8 STM because it's the most affordable one). It's my first upgrade since the purchase of 650D w/ 18-55mm & 55-250mm. I find that my shoots are mostly portraits, so it seems like a reasonable path to get a cheap prime as my first upgrade.

So seeing Canon's upgrade to their famous f1.8 primes, I actually decided to get the STM version. Asked for the pricing with one the famous malaysian shops, and its price is around ~rm500-ish. Consulted one of my friends (wedding videographer/media student) about getting the STM version after trying out his mk.2, but he strongly advised my against buying the STM version saying that the STM doesn't really offer much benefits for the extra price. He said to better use the money for a second-hand f1.4, but if I'm dead set on getting the f1.8 then he would just rather recommend the mk.2 instead.

So, here am I, asking for more opinions, to go with mk.2 or STM? Way-in pls sifu!

p/s I know it's just merely a cheapo lens compared to all the godly lens, it's just an small addition to my camera gear that doesn't cost me a bomb. One of a side-interests of mine hahahahaha.

If not mistaken mkII has rounder bokeh than the old one cause of the new aperture design and metal mount.

Oh right. doh.gif stupid me. All these lenses name confuses me sometimes. All I know the "newer" 50mm has metal mount and rounded bokeh.

Help needed!

I have this image that I process in LR, but the export image is quite far from what I see in LR. Is there any way that I get the exported image as it appears in LR? Or this is just the nature of JPEG?

In LR
[attachmentid=6435874]

Export image
[attachmentid=6435862]

Thanks

You need to calibrate your monitor. Theres an option to change the color profile to sRGB.

Ps: i cannot really see anything cause im on phone but im guessing to do with why lightroom has yelllow tint on the picture.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry that I did not specify clearly about my dissatisfaction of the export image. They are the losing of clarity/sharpness and noise of the export image that I got frustrated with, rather than the colour. And the colour profile is already in sRGB all the while.

About the yellow tint, I couldn't really get you. You mean the image appears to yellowish to you?
*
Sometimes Lightroom does that when the monitor profile is not in sync. One way to tell is when you convert to B&W (press V), the grey area will look yellowish. In case you are looking at lightroom 'sRGB' setting, I mean the monitor profile, like you type search "Color Management" on search window (the magnifying glass icon) and set the profiles to "sRGB Color Space Profile" though I can't remember the procedure.

Try googling "How to assign an sRGB ICC Profile to your monitor "

Another reason maybe because of export setting where your jpeg quality setting is set low.

Okay, I got you now. I changed the colour profile to sRGB and see differences in colour.

I set the quality to 100 with no limit of file size. And thing appears to be even stranger now. With the same image in LR, the image appears to be different when I switch between 'Library' and 'Develop'. When I am in 'Develop' tab, the image is what I want it to be, good clarity and sharpness. But when I switch to 'Library', it appears to be like the export image.
*
That's cause library use downgraded flat img as cover so you don't have to wait for load time lah. Why not tell us if any change to exported jpeg after you set up the monitor profile? If still cannot fix, then only way is to re-install and hope it gets fixed.

Dont really understand the obsession with having 4k video in a camera meant for still photos. Sure you can get all in one package, but that simply makes the cost go higher which is not a plus point. Instead of better fps shots, autofocus, dynamic range and touch screen, a lot time and cost pour into video feature instead. If video geeks want to do video there are other more suitable video camera out there without the 30min limit due to taxation reason and heat sink problem. You cant have your cake and eat it too. Take GH4 as example. Its a great 4k video but not a good photo camera. A6300 would have been great step up from a6000 and cheap too if they hadnt bother with 4k. Really 5DmkIV would have been great if it just marketed as still photo camera and canon would have better off develop mirrorless with the dual pixel tech.

Because at the moment there are people with lots of canon glass who seek good 4K video with a 35mm full frame sensor without breaking the bank with the cinema or 1D series.
Many have already migrated to Sony because of this. Some are holding back because of the potential of 5D4.
*
I get that. But sony receive a good deal of critism on their side too. Overheating, pixel binning, 30min limit, poor battery life, no touch screen and not really cheap lens selection. 4k really is becoming a bane than a plus for those hoping just to have reasonably priced FF photo camera with updated specs in areas like battery life.

80D for example is a fine video camera with everything needed for video and control except people beaching about 4k.

30 mins limit.
Over heating.
Poor battery life.
Pixel binning.
All 4 of this is very difficult to avoid and dslr/mirror less video shooters have already gotten used to it even in the 1080P era.

30 mins limit is hardly an issue unless you are recording a really long event. In which case over heating will happen first. If however, you take non event videos- this isn't an issue at all.
Battery life can be solved simply by carrying more batteries.

As for pixel binning. Well, better that than a crop sensor.
I don't think they have a choice with pixel binning anyway unless the sensor itself is 4k.

It's frustrating that almost everything has 4K. Even mobile phones. Trust me, I understand it's a lot harder to implement that on a larger sensor... But it's still frustrating.
In a few years time, 4K will be the new 1080P
*
Forgot to mention the mother of all complaint. Rolling shutter. Good luck getting that ironed out. Knowing how much 4k processing demand on a cmos sensor, it will be bloody expensive. Canon is currently developing global shutter on this issue but i bet it will not be implement on dslr for many years. 4k on smartphone is possible due to lower end construction compared to dslr. But who watches at 4k?

The sensor technology itself makes it cheaper to produce a 4k sensor for a phone. The demand is way higher too, so they can mass produce it at a very cheap price.

4K itself has a few advantage.
1. Gives you the ability to crop even if your output is 1080P. Even reduce camera shake.
2. Downscaling a 4k video will generally give you more details than a 1080P video. This depends on how (which algorithm) you downscale it, but it can be better than on camera 1080P.
3. Some screens are already in 4K. In a few years time, 4K will be the new 1080P.
As for Rolling shutter.
It's not that bad for some models and its alright for some genre. Global shutter however is quite an old technology even on cmos camera but it'll just be more expensive. That extra cost may not justify the loss in sales.
*
I think we are getting off topic here. I'm not disputing 4k benefit. I'm disputing why 4k is like a compulsory feature on a camera nowadays. Oh no, 5DmkIV failed because it has shit 4k. Seriously? Was it supposed to be a video dslr in the first place?

Just a side note, I'm not a fan of Canon and their primitive decision not to innovate until Sony took over. Just that this 4k race is slowly eating up features that should be improved like battery life, touchscreen on cameras (we have like cheap phone with touch screen but camera department is wayyyyyy too slow), better wifi/internet/social integration, and cheaper production model. Hey, just like a6000 when it came out. But all ignored in favor of 4k feature.

Of course people have high expectations for the 5D4.  Whatever the specs are now its not going to update for like 4 years.  And video was the focus because that was the area canon been weakest against its competitors.

And many video shooters are Canon users.  Well a lot did jump to Sony.  But Canon users want to see something future proof.  5d3 did that future proof job well as it is still seen as a great camera today.  People worry this might not be the case for 5d4.

And videoguys don't like to be told to buy a pro video camera.  Its expensive.  That's like telling  photographers to go buy an expensive medium format.

Anyways Dslr and mirrorless are seen to do both photos and videos.  There's no turning back.  Even fujifilm has joined in with their xt2 with 4k and f log.
*
If you want proper 4k without all that severe rolling shutter, overheat and 30min limit, videoguys need to save up. Otherwise like how most Photoguys is content with FF instead of having medium format, videoguys need to be content with 1080p or cropped 4k instead of FF 4k.

Another example, which really baffles me why some people has sour expectation of D5 and 1DXmkII for having such limiting 4k feature when those two are supposedly marketed for pros who need reliable af and blazing fast fps for shooting fast moving objects. You don't see them bringing that camera around to say Rio Olympic just to shoot 4k, do you?

Or get GH4 (or new up GH5) with speed booster and an already wide selection of m43 cinelens.

they never bundle the adapter anymore? when i bought my m1 few years ago it came with the adapter.

but all i can say is Canon is definitely getting there, the m5 isnt so far back compared to a6000 and newer m4/3 cameras. good to see that canon is finally being serious about producing a proper mirrorless camera.

they need to make a few more EFM primes and thats it, you already have a good UWA, good superzoom, good telephoto and a walkaround prime.
*
If they price the same as a6300, they are still going to fail though. One reason mirrorless got popular cause of the cheaper body with packed features that dslr till today cannot match.

Dont get me wrong. M5 is what i wanted in a mirrorless body. Solid built, compact, fast autofocus, apsc size and importantly which sony always refuse....a bloody touchscreen! But the price and no fast <f2.0 cheap native primes is going to kill it for sure.

im not sure too, very curious also. becos i tried many many times. Im using 70D btw. I doubt it was the focus point becos, no matter how i focus, the red dots will never focus on both side (very left & right)
friends of mine told me that it was because my 70D is crop sensor? not full ?
*
Tell your friend, if you go full frame, the blurriness may get even worse. Smaller sensor actually wider dof (depth of focus) from front to back. You can test it out with your phone vs your 70D.

And i may be wrong but.....since you said 10mm-22mm, I'm guessing you use the 10mm a lot, standing really close to the centre of the group at widest f3.5, which may explain why the edge is blurry. Try 22mm and stand further back to fill the whole group in the frame. If still blurry, crank up to f8.0 and make sure you don't have shaky hand.
