Is it even possible to become a triple S / yellow book holder, when u already pass the SHOexam but didnt acquire 3years working exp?

Im not from safety background, so what safety jobs can I apply while possessing only the NIOSH SHO attend cert?

You can apply to our company as we are an SHE company.

But no fresh grads please, we consider only those with minimum 4 years experience and those who are not jobhoppers.

it is an exam actually. but due to the harshness of the question, training center will usually conduct 5-days course for you before the actual sitting in the exam.

4 - 5 days exam > weekend > exam

Do they also use the 'Greenbook' term ? I mean, what certificate will they give to u to approve u as a competent person?

i think you misunderstood some of the terms regarding HSE competency..

Green Book = competency as Safety & Health Officer, granted by the Department of Occupational Safety & Health Malaysia and is governed by the OSHA 1994 Act.

recent competency from DOSH are known as yellow book. a bit 'lower class' from green book holder and mostly applicable for construction site.

others is like CIMAH competent person (highly in demand, currently around Malaysia less than 30 people with this competency), industrial hygienist etc.

As for NEBOSH IGC, malaysian employers seldom see this as an added value. those taking this exams usually have their sights set to work oversea in the HSE field. example you want to be SHO in Australia / Singapore, you need to have at least NEBOSH IGC before being considered to work there.

on your first question, you can definitely get the cert, even without actual experience in the field. i personally know a lot of people who backdated their document / evidence just to cut short the duration.

but.. even with the cert i.e. green/yellow book, it is quite easy to identify those who are new and those who use short-cut to get their certs tongue.gif

I actually caught one guy doing this and promptly reported him to DOSH.

We in the safety line cannot be complacent and must guard the profession against unscrupulous people and practises.

totally agree with you bro. and it is so easy to identify who cheated and who is not. ask few basic questions, and see them stumbling to find correct answers. even the use of common terms also got jumble up.

Better look elsewhere

Institutions vomiting too many courses for people hence now there is less and less job for safety practitioners

not to mention, those SHO who practice "lesen gantung" all over malaysia

for each construction project with a value of 20 million and above, the main contractor must hire a certified safety officer with a valid greenbook. The safety officer would have to register the construction site with DOSH/JKKP using his green book registration

"gantung lesen" is a practice that whereby the main contractor have more than 1 project running concurrently, they would just use the same safety officer to register the construction site. sometimes different main contractor sometimes small project such as construction of a Mosque in some ulu area.

sometimes up to 10 sites at the same time, and the main contractor would negotiate to pay the safety officer RM**** to RM **** (depending on the size and value of the site) for each site. You think O&G safety still the riches among them? to construct a small mosque at some ulu are also they pay the safety officer 2k per month to use his green book, and he does not even have to check up on the site ever, as long there is no incident happen and if it did they will cover up as soon as they can. DOSH don't bother check the site because "not high priority" .

DOSH is trying to kill off this practice, but it is still going rampant, not only that other safety officer is not getting job, even the small Site Safety Supervisor (SSS) can't get jobs.

and institutions is still vomiting out SSS and SHO because they are run by the same old school safety practitioner because they know teaching safety courses is easy money even though when they come out, they wont have any jobs for them

example.
a SSS course is RM2k , average class attendance is 50-60 pax, course length 2 weeks. 1 month 2 batches, you do the math, how much this institutions is earning. Soon people will complain safety susah cari kerja, so better they earn as much as they can before the jigg is up.

Ok kinda guess is this case. My co. projects the main con also have such practice. doh.gif

I've spoken to a few DOSH officers and it seems that they are having difficulties as you said to kill off such practice.

4 years experience in Safety?

Should I have questions in relation to safety and health in the workplace, would you mind if I pm you for advice/suggestions?

I am still fairly new in the safety field, only 1 and a half years experience, still working to accumulate experience before can proceed to register with DOSH as SHO. So I would grateful if Safety Sifus can share some guidance. sweat.gif

if you're the only safety officer in a company, can you still hold other executive positions, ie, quality assurance executive?
