ok, manage to hear edifier M3300, M3400 and Altec lansing vs4212 (if Im not mistaken) side by side. (I cant remember which other Altec Lansing models I auditioned).

For a boom boom effect, altec lansing vs4212 wins but sound is muffled. IMO for gaming sounds, and techno musics would be good.

M3400 - bass ok but sounds very loose (not defined). I do not know how to explain but I think that was my impression. Clarity less than M3300.

M3300 - Very bright sound, clear. Subwoofer need to turn the knob (at the back) to full to feel the bass. Bass is tight and defined. However, the boom boom feeling is not there. Treble is bright.

2 qns on M3300:
1- the subwoofer is facing the side. Would adjusting the subwoofer to face front make a lot of difference? or is it better to let the subwoofer to face its side.
2- the speakers I heard I believe are new. Would there be any noticable improvement in sound quality after their burn-in period? Would the bass improve and the treble not too bright?

Wish there's a place in KKinabalu to audition the S2.1MKII sad.gif

I auditioned Samsung speaker (cant remember the model number), but it was in a different shop (ie not comparing side-by-side with the edifier). IMHO Samsung is too bright, didnot feel the bass. So, a better pick for me would be M3300.

nb: didnot auditioned the edifier at PC City (edifier's Sabah's distributor) but at another pc store.

1. Honestly, I feel that there is a noticeable difference. If you are facing it at the front, the bass is more defined and tight. If you are directly facing the side, you feel a little boominess and muddled but the effects decrease when you a farther away from the side of the woofer. Best to put the front side facing your seating position.

2. The bass will get looser and deeper in time but it is marginal. Don't expect it to turn into a boom-boom speaker after a month. I don't think the treble will decrease but you will get used to it and appreciate it more. I feel that all musical speakers are like this; tight but not boomy bass with bright trebles. Using good sound card improves it. I added a AV-710 and the bass became even punchier with more detailed.

hi killdavid,
thanks for the reply.

I just need to make further clarification as Im not an audio tech guy. Just a layman, hence my explaination and terminology used are not clear.

Looking at the picture above, the subwoofer is rectangular in shape and has a hole (air hole? I do not know what thats called blush.gif) at the 'front'. Looking from the front (ie facing the 'air-hole'), the subwoofer is facing the side. Hence that was my query is, if I change the orientation of the subwoofer 'box' so that the subwoofer speaker be facing me (ie the 'air-hole' facing to the side)... would that make the bass sound quality be better than having the 'air-hole' facing me? Which would be the preference? (sound 'quality' in general terms as different individuals have different preference)

Which would be the 'recommended' orientation? facing the 'air-hole' or facing the 'subwoofer speaker' ?

I think M3300 is a good buy. Just that comparing it side by side with Altec Lansing VS4212 boominess, I think M3300's bass is very tight (maybe a lil bit too tight). But (as killdavid explained in qn 2) after burn-in period, one should expect the bass will loosen up a little bit, which I think I prefer. I like the boom-boom effect of vs4212, but muddiness of the sound coming out from the speaker left me a lot to be desired. In my book, its a thumbs down to AL vs4212.

I'm not an audio techie myself but I do have a M3300. I believe the technical term for the air hole is 'hyperboloidal bass port'. I believe this enhances the bass. The hyperboloidal bass port should be facing your seating position for defined, tight bass. If you face the woofer speaker itself, the effect is slight boominess and muddled. Burned in speakers performance is very subjective. Some say no difference and some swear it is noticeable.

M3300 wins hands down compared with Altec's entry level speakers but I bet AL fans would tell you otherwise tongue.gif

The S2.1M & S2.1 will be arrive b4 the S2.1MKII. The S2.1MKII shud be available in few months time. I think arround June. The new high end 5.1 series will be here soon too.

This year, Edifier will focus more on their High end series compare to last year so u can see alot of new S series will be launch in this few months. it is totally diff with the last S series.

Hi Edifier, I'm new to Edifier products, wanna try out these speakers. Can I know if there is any showroom in JB?

Btw, if I want to choose 5.1 speaker, which would you suggest between S5.1M and DA5000 (or others high end speaker) if my purpose is for movie, music and sometimes pc game? What is the price range for both speakers?

Hope to hear from you soon, thanks.

Regards
