Jmc start from age 4. My kids start with Music Wonderland at 2yo, learning basic rhythm, singing and etc .

Depend on parent. For example we just want to let our kids expose to music and group of kids. But some parent see it as a waste of money, usually quite many drop out in music Wonderland class after a month.

You can wait until 4yo and let your kids start with JMC

My son finished his JMC, now in JXC. My daughter just start her JMC.

Class is fun. Kids learn to sing solfege (do re mi), play keyboard / electone (not piano), read notes, listen to tones, etc, in a group environment with parents tagging along.

Some parents prefer kids to learn under 1-on-1 environment.
Some parents want the pace to be faster. The course is low pressure, and since it is in a group, some kids will be better than the others.

Important thing is to get a good instructor. Turnover for instructors at Yamaha could be high. Get a trial class. If you find the instructor to be "too young" and inexperienced, then wait for another class by another instructor ...

I'm adult now. I start with jmc course when I can't even talk well. Its very good to me, it make music a second nature to me.

What children learn in jmc can't be taught if they start grade 1 Abrsm like age8. Because JMC teaches music like ABC to kids.

You can pm me if anything

Kepong area.

Not really. My son and daughter typically practice ~ 10 min a day (consistency is the key).
Class is conducted using Yamaha Electone (electronic organ, cheapest model is ~RM9k). But you don't need to buy it. Can practice using cheaper electronic keyboard. My kids just happen to have a hand-me-down piano.
Music pieces are very easy at the beginning. The 1st piece is just kid using right thumb and play middle Do 3 times following music. By the end of 1st book (4 books for 2 years course), kid should be able to play simple pieces involving do-re-mi-fa-so easily using either hands. Some parents find this progress is too slowwwwww.

At the end of 2 years, there will be an assessment. Play 3 pieces of music, sing a song, sing solfege of a piece of music, read notes, recognise 8 basic chords.
No failure, all kids will pass smile.gif

The solfege teaching when they are small kids is something they will learn that an adult student will find hard to learn when they are older.

Which is music hearing, or pitching. Anyway, I find jmc courses good from personal experience.

And I'm not a teacher lol, working adult now rofl

Good for your kid and you smile.gif

Be ready to invest your time to guide your kid. The drop out rate of JMC is surprisingly high during the first few months ... (from my observation around 30%).
Those that stick around tends to finish the 2 year course.

By the way, parents of the kids tend to become support group and friends eventually biggrin.gif

You don't need get electone or digital piano or acoustic piano.

Heck a rm700 keyboard is sufficient, or go buy secondhand keyboard from garage sales/secondhand fb groups for few hundred bucks.

Cheap keyboard are light on touch, for ur children to wack. And the way they wack, they going to spoil it eventually.

Why not digital piano or acoustic piano, the keys are too hard. And children lose interest fast or change interest [not their fault], so dun invest until u are sure they are continuing with the piano education later on.( imagine you spend 5k on piano only go hv ur kids say no interest, can buy motor d)

Edit: finished JMC when I was a kid. So I know what I saying lol

Thanks a lot bro, your input really change my mind. At 1st i only thought of getting cheap piano, but now i got extra choices "keyboard". It is true, for now their age is to whack instead of playing haha... Any keyboard recommendation max RM1K or RM1K below ? As long can play & practice, hook up to PC or ipad or AVR haha... Any features within this budget ? Not going to buy now, most probably after 3 - 6 months. Thanks a lot cool2.gif

Yes, they probably gonna press every button on the keyboard and slam theirs hands on it. So its part of the fun.
Yamaha makes a lot of cheap keyboard. I would recommend getting a secondhand, a simple search on jamtank fb group and lowyat Musical instrument garage sales shows ppl selling secondhand keyboard for rm500-700.

Its good enough for keyboard to last u few years until they are really serious in going into piano(Abrsm grade), then u may consider getting a secondhand electric piano/acoustic piano. I stress secondhand cause there are abundant in the market with desperate ppl willing to let go cheap, as first hand is very expensive. As long the keys make sound, is fine. Next, parent has no idea how to pick a piano, and is the kids who are playing. So only get a good one once they are older and are able to pick themselves .

A keyboard that can connect PC iPad etc is probably a synthesizer and cost up to few thousands and are probably for professional musicians. A normal keyboard will at best have a midi out.

As BelowAverage mentioned, you only need to buy a cheap keyboard.

But don't wait for 3-6 months. Buy it as soon as the class start so that your kid can practice / play right away, otherwise they may not able to keep up in class and may lose interest.

Think about it, you pay 3 months for JMC class, which is already > RM400, with book / CD / DVD, you dump in > RM500. Just spend another few hundreds and get a cheap keyboard smile.gif

Hi...my kid is in his 4th mth of jmc and the teacher keep asking us to buy the yamaha 12lk piano in every lesson. Now she uses scare tactics say that my kid finger is flat while playing and does not curve and no strength due to no piano at home. Y does she say that? My kid practice on a very cheap keyboard (not kid keyboard ya). She even harshly push my kid fingers and spoke loudly and i saw it caused him tense up and bevame stress. I dont want him to lose interest n b scared. Isnt jmc just foundation? The way she is teaching is like teaching piano? Can the keyboard last 2 yrs? Or issit my kid cannot curve finger due to no talent?

Hope u can advice

I went to JMC when I was young and its pretty helps me on my hearing and basic learning.
And I personally think that a good piano helps your kid to develop her fingering skills.
Because until I grow up, I have weak fingers which cause quite a trouble for me to learn some skills for my exams.. and i realise some of my friends own a heavy piano and their finger are stronger.. It helps on strengthen the fingering..

I believe that they need some time to learn on curve fingers and understand more..

Have faith and all the best!

Yes, all 3 children are in different stages of Yamaha music courses.
As I mentioned, the drop out typically occur at the very early stage. Those that stick around tend to stick around for the long haul (JMC > JXC > JNC > ANC ... )

Not sure if its relevant to ask here. But ive been searching high and low for keyboardist for my 5 piece band. We plan to play for events, functions and gigs once the line up is completed. All that's left to look for now is a keyboardist. Based in Klang Valley. Please pm if this interest you.

Any parents here enrol their kids in JMC for this era? Not decades ago ya...

My kid gonna finish JMC soon, next year will be the JXC.
I'm now in dilemma whether should let her continue JXC in Yamaha or find piano teacher 1 to 1 teaching.

Actually what is the difference on 1 to 1 teaching and JXC syllabus??

Any parents here enrol their kids in JMC for this era? Not decades ago ya...

My kid gonna finish JMC soon, next year will be the JXC.
I'm now in dilemma whether should let her continue JXC in Yamaha or find piano teacher 1 to 1 teaching.

Actually what is the difference on 1 to 1 teaching and JXC syllabus??

JXC is good on hearing and pitch for kid. Where by 1 to 1 class teacher doesn't emphasise that much on that.

JXC can be running parallel together with 1 to 1 class such as piano, violin, cellos and etc.

If your kid finishing JMC soon, you would notice most of the song they can play from hearing and singing. i.e if they hear re mi fa so la / so-ti-re, they would be able to straight away play on piano/electone.
