Hi sifus,
Finally my >15 yrs old AV receiver stopped working.
Sony STR-DB930

I have a pair of Mordaunt Short MS10i as front, B&W CC3 center, and a pair of MS10 as surround.

What is a decent AV receiver below rm2k? Here are my preferred features:
1. Binding posts connections (at least for front RL)
2. USB port on front panel for music playback
3. Optical input for my old tv
4. Coaxial input for old DVD player
5. Wireless BT for the occasional music streamed from phone, or video from kid's tablet
6. Spotify network features would be nice for the missus

I looked online (I am located in Penang) and see a deal on a local shop:
1. Denon AVR-X1200W rm1799
2. Onkyo TX-NR545 rm1899
Having read Onkyo & Pioneer reliability issues in this thread, probably will rule out Onkyo.

Any Sony, Yamaha, Marantz in the same price range or better value?

how much do you like sony sound? kl sony center got sell 7.1 receiver but price forgotten (was it 2.5k ?)
i quite like it too

for audyssey sound by denon and marantz, easily tuned for multiple seats.
pioneer avr is *quite* terrible in music playback which i took half yr to try adjust until give up.
yamaha rxv no kickz

*this year self experienced denon x2200w (not ur model) kena 1 case d.o.a. right after install. shop owner very steady, he replace a new unit no need wait for warranty.
so make sure the amp you buy is local distributor dynamic acoustic s/b

Thanks for your advice ktek.
I am located up North, so going KL to survey for AV receiver is too far.

By the way, I am also looking to replace my MS10i as one speaker's binding posts were previously damaged after my kid tripped the speaker (which was on stand). I have since changed to a hanging tv cabinet, and the front speakers sit on it.

I see online shop selling Q Acoustics Q2020i at rm899 per pair.
I wonder how the sound will be like if paired to Denon X1200W?

i stay pg. similar situation as u.
occasionly ask friends and home relative in kl to help cod.

actually avr cannt really survey. as the shops only connect 1 or 2 demo display. so far the only shop has 8 demo room i went in was ipoh choy hifi. of course he put own carry brands only. mix with all different cable and spk i go back without any catch of idea lol.
so

back to topic. ok qacoustic is a branding of qed cables england (fyi). so 5" will not give sufficient kick unless u with subwoofer.
other concerns of music and movie are not to worry (means quite good)

899 that online shop is s____ laser i guess. i just bought a player from him.

Yeah my subwoofer died many years ago and I didn't replace it.
If 5" woofer is smallish, how about Wharfedale Crystal 30.3 at rm999?

For movie sub which is smaller than 10" is really not recommended

I am actually referring to the woofers in my front LR bookshelf speakers. Many are 5" or so, but some like Wharfedale Crystal 30.3 or Diamond 10.2 are 6.5".

Yeah I kinda agree 10" subwoofer is the recommended minimum for HT. Probably those 8" subwoofers are meant for 2.1 music where your front LR have smallish woofers like 4" or so.

Eh?

My Ascend Acoustics Sierra Towers and Center all use 5" drivers, which by logic should be a "step down" from my previous SVS Prime and Ultra bookshelfs using 6.5" drivers, right? No.

The Ascend speakers beats the SVS speakers without a break of a sweat. And since movies generally require a sub, the low-end "loss" wasn't even apparent at all.

What I'm trying to say is, don't be so quick to dismiss a smaller driver. It's all about proper integration.

Thanks for the advice.
I just read Q Acoustics 3020 got a top review from Whats Hifi.

I have a pair of them as my desktop speakers, mated with a Sb1000 sub. The 3020s does nothing wrong, very natural sounding speakers for the price. Sumptuous bass, nice smooth midrange and a tweeter that doesn't cut in your ears like a sawmill.

While they lack a lot of the "hi-fi" bullshit qualities (not enough air, soundstage not having enough width or depth for example), they are competent in what they were intended for : a great pair of speakers at a reasonable price.

Anyone tested / have Wharfedale Diamond 10.2?

If only binding posts are damaged, can change the binding post terminals only.

Lazada

Even if you decide to buy new speakers, can still sell the old one after fixing it.

Thanks for the advice.
Well binding post and part of the body are damaged. Not sure about fixing it.
