Newbie question..

Not sure if this is the best thread.. but am going thru AVR and soundbar to buy, then something hit me, what about movie in hard drive?

Most soundbar would require me to use optical cable, so am I correct to assume the audio from my hard drive movies will play in the soundbar?

If I get an AVR, I will connect the TV to the ARC output with astro, BD, PS4 to the AVR. Then, the hard drive still connects to TV, will the audio play thru the AVR or just the TV speakers? What about laptop, usually I connect it to the TV HDMI, if I do that will the audio play via AVR or i have to connect it to the AVR HDMI Input?

Thanks.

I assume you connect your TV out with optical cable to your soundbar optical in. Then yes, the soundbar will replace your TV speakers.
If both TV and AVR support ARC. Then the sound from TV can output in AVR. Eg. The movie from your hard drive that play in the TV. Or YouTube or any streaming apps in the TV.
But all the others devices like BD, PS4, Astro, laptop that using hdmi connection have to connect to AVR hdmi input in order get sound from AVR.

Nothing. Just upgraded my TV so now looking for better sound system.

At first looking at soundbar, so far 1 have these 3 in mind:

Samsung HW-K551
Sonos Playbar
Sony HT-CT-390

Then, of course got poisoned to look at AVR, so far keeping these in compare list

Marantz NR1506
Yamaha RX-V381
Denon AVR-1713

All basically entry model, I try to keep budget below 3k with speakers.

Haven't decided which speaker to buy. Once I decided with AVR, then will start to look for speakers.

If you just want to have a bit louder sound, just get the sound bar. Going into AVR and speaker, 3k is really not enough to make a different

That is what I thought, but everywhere in LYN says if getting soundbar around 2k, AVR at that price range with 2.1 system is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYY better.

So, now I am confused, again. confused.gif
