Any cheap AP or repeater to recommend?

My poor Smart tv and ps4 can't seems to get full speed from the current distance.
*
I'm using DLink DAP-1665 as a wired AP. It's dual band but I only use it for the 5GHz since my existing router is OK for 2.4GHz throughout the whole house.

anyway to get the unifi people to give me all free modem, stb and btu rather than reuse my old one if i decide to get the 30 mbps?
*
Upgrade first then you have 1 year to slowly sabotage your router and stb. BTU no need to change. Old & new BTU same specs. Some even say the old one better quality.

I got my STB changed a week after my upgrade.

How much yea?

My PS4 can't get 5 ghz also, macam no point.

DAP-1665 is 250-270 but I got mine for 195 after 30% disc from gemfive. Xiaomi Mini is around 100-150 very cheap dual band. If you only need 2.4Ghz then got many cheaper options below 100 or use an old wifi router as an ap.

Wired Ap is always the best. Or use Homeplug if no cable. Like someone a few posts earlier, I also prefer to avoid repeaters.

Some of my posts when shopping around for an AP.

Thinking of changing to a new router...still cannot brain how scary it is the technician went thru my router remotely so easily..

Budget for a router around rm200-300. I read thru the forums here they recommend an asus, since no problem with iptv. I use hypptv as my daily viewing, not a big fan of Astro.

Eyeing on asus RT-N12HP
*
For about RM300, you can get a Mikrotik RB951Ui-2HnD. Very good router. I'm using its bigger brother, the RB2011UAS-2HnD.

For both the max wifi output is 30dBm or 1000mWatts. The RB951Ui has low gain antennas, good for covering multiple floors. If you're in a single storey abode then something with a higher gain antenna will be better.

Works fine with HyppTV too.

make sure you use Cat-6 cable, as it capable of gigabite connection (up to 10 Gbite/sec)

Don't use the old Cat-5 (10/100 Mbps)
*
Actually min req for gigabit 1000BaseT is Cat 5 cabling. Cat 5e works well and cheap. Cat 6 overkill for now but no harm in using it.

For 10GBaseT, I think you'll need Cat 6A.

Lol bro you're really a hardcore mikrotik supporter. I'm waiting to migrate to mikrotik too once the hap ac is out haha.
*
I just really appreciate their routers for the price and what it can do. Wouldn't want fellow LYNers to miss out on something good and it's easy to have not heard of it since they don't advertise, period.

Me too, waiting for the HAP AC. Are you going for the MUM (Mikrotik User Meeting) in KL next month? They're giving away free routerboard but dunno what it'll be. In 2014 in Istanbul, the freebie was an RB951G-2HnD.

I note that wired repeaters are always the best.

But my current situation does not allow me to do so laugh.gif

Where can I get the Mini?

Gonna probably get the lan cable, pull it as close as possible to my room and plug in the Xiaomi there laugh.gif
*
If really cannot then no choice but go wifi repeaters. My uncle's house uses 4 Mikrotiks, one is the main router/AP and 3 more as WDS repeaters. Works quite well. In addition to that, 2 more Mikrotiks as a WiFi bridge just for the HyppTV. Walking into his house is like walking into a microwave oven. :-)

How about Homeplug? Maybe can try that. I'm using Aztech 500mbps Homeplugs from my router located upstairs to my HyppTV downstairs. Very stable. HyppTV only require max 10mbps to perform nicely. When I installed them I did a quick file transfer test and got about 350mbps sustained through the homeplugs. My house is old and is single-phase electricity so it's OK. 3-phase supply may pose problems if the power sockets are on different phases.

As for the Mini, just look in the trade zone, should be a few there.

Sure, it's for everyone, even those who are just curious. You can register here:
http://mum.mikrotik.com/

It's free btw.

Oh but don't get your hopes too high for the free routerboard. This is the email I received Jan 14, it's only free for the next 100 registrations. Probably all gone by now. :-(

They are great for the price but it is incredibly hard for most people to configure it.

Powerful little device but I believe their Wireless AC hardware is still quite weak?
*
Agreed, they're quite hard to configure. Everything had to be done manually. It was quite a pain. A single mispelling would prevent things from working. Things are getting better though. Last year Mikrotik introduced QuickSet which simplified the setup a lot. I did a little guide for setting up UniFi with QuickSet which cuts down on the number of steps.
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry78327719

Not sure about AC. Still waiting for their consumer oriented AC hardware to come out. But I remember I had a lot of complaints about the wifi performance of the RB751U-2HnD which was my first Mikrotik router about 2 years ago. I actually found the DIR-615 to be better. However, over the last 2 years, wifi has improved a lot through firmware upgrades. Current RB951 models and the RB2011UAS-2HnD that I use are pretty good.

My house has 3-phase electric power but has no problem using homeplug at all the power sockets in rooms that I want to have internet access.
*
I dunno why. When I tried at my uncle's house, power socket at upstairs hall to socket in bedroom on the same floor just didnt't wanna work reliably for HyppTV.It works ok half the time then starts to jerk and pixelate. The connection LED sometimes amber, sometimes red. Never get green.

Same here. Very slow connection and keep on error at Cheras Balakong this evening.

Sungai Long here, fairly close to Balakong, about 6pm speed was OK (30/10) but ping was quite high at 32ms. Test again a few mins ago, speed still ok but ping still high. Wonder what's happening.

Guys, what router u guys using?
My current Asus RT-N12HP always disconnects. Inconsistent connection.
*
I'm using Mikrotik RB2011UAS-2HnD. Very good router. Cheaper version of it would be the RB951Ui-2HnD, about RM300.

Works fine with HyppTV too.

My neighbour uses RT-N12-D1, not the HP version. No complaints from them so far. But our area not many other wifi routers. Sometimes disconnections are caused by congestion. Only thing you can do is try to find a cleaner channel.

So my suggestion is to determine the cause before spending money on a new router.

My neighbour got same problem but not patah. It seems when the techs came to fix it, they found her fibre cable disconnected and replaced by another fibre for another house. So they suspect due to miscommunication that the contractor tercabut her fibre cable. Like that also can. rclxub.gif

Does placing router beside the TV contribute to the problem? I read somewhere it does.
I detected 3 (including myself) wifi signals only in my neighborhood.

*
TV won't have much interference unless your TV got wifi built-in.

The TV itself will block wifi signals. Last time my wifey hide the router behind the TV and that degraded the signal quite a bit.

Hi guys,

Is there any software out there that I know how many GB did I download in 1 month?
*
Stats for one computer or overall stats at the router?

If for individual PC then there's plenty of software available. For the Mac, I use iStat Menus but it only keeps track of totals since boot. For PCs, I used to use something called DUMeter which does monthly.

user posted image

Nowadays I track at the router. It keeps totals since the last reboot. It has SNMP so I can monitor from the Mac. The app I use on the Mac to gather stats is Peakhour. It can do monthly totals though I don't really use that feature. And to be accurate, the PC needs to be running 24/7.
