I know there have some past threads on entry level guitar for beginners but I like to ask again based on my requirements. I've always been keen to learn guitar but dare not as I'm kinda slow in understanding music notes. Tried learning organ when I was a kid but that didn't go anywhere. Plus I have short fingers. I'm thinking to give it a second shot on music, maybe enrol in guitar class.

My bro visited a music instrument store and the salesgirl recommended Morrison for ladies. Do u think this is a good choice, keeping in mind I have short fingers (my biggest fear)? If not, any recommendation for a decent entry level guitar? My budget is no more than RM300, and I prefer to not start with a kapok guitar.

Yes i understand. I like to get advice on which of the cheap acoustic guitars is more suitable for short fingers. My ultimate dream is to be able to play finger-style but I know tht's a bit ambitious smile.gif

Try google acoustic/classical/electric guitar, IMO u should look for small size classical-like with nylon.

go buy a 3/4 size acoustic.
http://www.cortguitars.com/en/product/earth-mini

or something slightly bigger but still small.
http://www.cortguitars.com/en/product/l100c

both also rm700-800 only.

i would really try to stay away from most guitars under rm300.
perhaps a little more closer to rm400 still respectable in yamaha f310...but the body isnt small.

but u can also buy used...can find the corts for rm500+ in used market...and the yamaha for rm300 or so.

coz u richfag

the thing about corts is that they are nice, but they have everything a budget guitar has, so you have the weird glossy stuff, the lack of attention to detail, pot metal/plastic/someshit composite bridge and tuners, tuning ratio is wtf and cheap hardware

like an ibanez gio and cheap squire, but they are also priced similarly to both those guitars.

then theres the thing about their guitars feeling sterile

like PRS tongue.gif

pine teles? nice but those ive played need a good setup

just china lazy to sort out and probably just luck of the year production see which one has any tongue.gif

but flame maple necks could be found on squiers going back to the 90s also...also on and off kinda thing.

I've not seen it in other squire ranges, normally in those i see this strangely finished overly glossed some weird wood neck guitar.

even in other brands made in the same factory you dont see such a thing normally the wood is compromised

well u can google image search and see a non-CV squiers with flame necks.
i recall got some affinity strats also with flame necks.
tho usually if u really want to, u can refinish a neck into faux flame maple either with lots of patience or burnt rope technique tongue.gif

This. OR find a parlour size guitar with smaller scale length (mine a Farida). They'll typically go over your budget, but really, you might as well save up and buy one you really like.

OR just use mind over matter, lots of great female guitarist and bassist out there for inspiration, dont think they have the privilege when they started out like we do.

the difference is in the finish not much the wood, wood about the same

actually the whole wood debate is overhyped, the real indicator of an expensive guitar is in the finish

the prb is, Finish is not all about looking, it determines a lot on how good a guitar plays and feels

in general nitro gives you that old guitar look and feel, poly doesnt, both on high end guitars would require good amounts of sanding and buffing which can take a loong time to do.

on cheaper guitars they spend less time doing this, so sometimes the neck is less smooth compared to more expensive guitars

there are no ladies guitar, maybe u wanna look at acoustic as oppose to classical. a guitar with a adjustable neck will be a good long term choice as u can adjust the string tension.
the last i got was the new line up "Kapok" brand for my student at 300+. an acoustic guitar but the neck felt much better and slimmer than my own electric guitar

now im hunting for an acoustic with good access to 21/22 frets...
telecoustic is tempting, but i cant get over how much a kapok sounds better unplugged than the telecoustic.

Short fingers also can play la, I have short fingers too. I still play guitar anyway, I play bass too.

Just go enjoy the instrument. Don't think negative just because of finger length.

So far I've only managed to check out the Yamaha shop at IOI Mall. Are there any other recommended guitar shops around Sunway/Subang/PJ/Puchong area? smile.gif

let us know which u tried.

those 3/4 size guitar also can try. yamaha got a few of those.

I see that the specs for Cort AD Mini is similar to Cort Eagle mini, both 3/4 size but the AD Mini is cheaper among the two. I am also taking into consideration Morrison or Cort AF 510, price wise.

cort EARTH mini... tongue.gif
the main difference is AD is 100% laminate, while the Earth has a solid top.

i dunno about baby taylor. but i like the feel of the GS mini alot when i tested by frens one.

have a high spec cort electric since late 90s not too bad for the price..
but somehow.. when i play, i want to hold a really good branded guitar. so its not been much use for the last 15years! laugh.gif

ya GS mini is good, certainly rapes the baby and big baby.
but the price of GS mini now is just too much, retail already rm3.1k+.
at that price i would rather put a little more and get the martin dreadnought junior.

yea was rm2.3k i think before GST and rm2.6b...oh wait rm4b...
but market is slowly going to go to hell very soon once the currency stabilizes in about a month or so...
the grey / parallel imports are probably gonna start doing good business again.

U mean the other thread for guitar beginner. Thought I post here since am also a lady beginner and someone had recommended F310 in one of the earlier replies. Didnt know C40 is classical. There's a Yamaha warehse sale and I learned from the comment section that c40 is a 3/4 size guitar. Thought it will be similar to cort mini. Guess i was wrong.

classical guitar bodies are smaller than dreadnought /f310, but not as small as 3/4.
just buy the cort earth mini if u want something smallish.

So I thought I post a follow up to my thread. I ended up buying a 2nd hand yamaha f310 few wks ago. I guess I have over worried on my length of my fingers. I've only learned a few basic chords so far and no problem stretching fingers. My fingers are still feeling pain but bearable for me. My concern though is that my left wrist is feeling pain. Is that normal? Also because I'm short in height smile.gif, I feel like I have to lean forward a bit more when learning the chords thus my shoulders also a bit tired. I keep telling myself to relax shoulder.

try playing it in the classical position, ie. guitar on left leg...but u will need a very short stool...or a small shoebox to lift ur left leg up abit tongue.gif
that position will prevent u from leaning forward too much and also have a little less tension on left wrist.

oh ya, when i say classical position, its in the loosest sense, dont have to strictly follow it.
but that position is ideal in helping to relieve tension from the 'slacker' position of what everyone sees with it on right thigh.

this guy i guess explains it well enough...tho he follows it quite strictly with the same foot stool height...i prefer the left leg about half that height.

any acoustic guitar within your budget.

Early level just need a guitar to wack.

If you budget rm200-300, then take 200-300 to shop you trustand buy a new one and wack.

I dun recommend rm200-300 secondhand ones, probably already have some parts faulty.

and interest come and go, dont make such a big investment on first instrument since dono what we really want.

eg. later on prefer classical guitar, or big body guitar, or semi acoustic.

just play using ur f310 for now. it's a good beginner guitar.

ur needs and niches will come later. that time, u will probably already know what ur target guitar is.
