This is a continuation of the thread http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/453614 ..

CPU at 50C while Sys at 36C, How to solve?

So today I got the Artic Silver 5 and began reapplying the thermal paste which was a not-so-smooth affair,

1. Unscrewed the noctua heatsink, somehow the paste that came with noctua has solidified over the 1 month or so that the amd chip (socket 939) stuck to the heatsink instead of being attached to the mobo, even theough the mobo clamp was not lifted up to 90 degrees.

Will there be any permanent damage there?

2. Wiped away the thick previous paste that has almost overflowed to the sides of the cpu. Noticed that there's a visible scratch (the color of the underside is copper-ish, the scratched area looks like a grey letter 'V') on the part of the noctua heatsink that directly comes into contact with the cpu.

No idea how that came to be there, what impact would it have?

3. Attached cpu back, clamped it, applied a rice grain and a half of artic silver 5, and attempted to screw back the noctua unit.

Screwing it back wasn't as easy this time as the mobo was not removed from the casing, it's very hard to see and align the 'light-spring-screws' with the screw holes and I had to lift the heatsink back up after touching the cpu once or twice b4 screwing it correctly.

Try reinstall the HSF yourself, and reapply a very thin layer of TIM as sHawTY said... the installation of NH-U12F is very easy actually... screw 1 side first a little bit until it won't loose out when screw another side, then screw the other side...then tighten both side untill it cannot be tighten anymore...

Followed Kataro's advice and slowly screwed both sides until it's reached the tight point.

Don't know wherter I blundered the process or that the AS5 needs to take a few days to do it's thing but here's the current speedfan status,

50C at idle is very bad.
might be bios goes nuts.
try clear the cmos, boot up with default fail safe settings and compare the readings

How to clear cmos?

Are you using "Core temp"? What is the reading on Core temp? It will give you the core temperature of both core0 and core1.

From what you have described, when you remove your HSF, you should twist your heatsink gently first to loosen the hold of the thermal paste. AMD has a guide on how to remove heatsinks from the CPU.

Also, for optimum TIM action, when you remove the old thermal paste, it would be better to use a branded thermal paste remover e.g. Arctic thermal paste remover.

Yes, I have a Noctua and it would be difficult to install the heat sink with the mobo in the casing. That's why my rig runs with the mobo outside the casing!!!  whistling.gif

I think the 'correct removal' part is too late to know know, will there be any lasting damage to the cpu?

I did not use a brande remover but made sure everthing is wiped off using a soft piece of lint-free cloth.

Yeah, the screwing part sucks.. wouldn't like to go through that again anytime soon. Still, the temp from Core-Temp below isn't very encouraging.. maybe need a week for AS5 to settle itself to decide whether this re-pasting process fail or succeed.

I just bought a coolermaster cooldrive and enclosed is a thermal pad, one side is a bit sticky and one side is smooth, the question is which side should be facing the hard disk?

The manual was very vague on this and the seller didn't know either.

So I googled and there was a review of a similar coolermaster cooldrive that's a different version, but that was even more confusing as it seems to say that I need to "PEEL plastic from both sides of the thermal pad"??!

It's really confusing cuz all I did was peel off the cover from the sticky side and attached the sticky side to the base (the part with exposed circuit board) of the hdd.

Should I recheck again if there's a layer on the non sticky side that needs to be peeled?
