lol..then its going to be a hard job. Then would having TIM that is too thin will cause heat dissapation problem as well?I only knew applying TIM would need special skill as well..lol..I use to just put like one or two drop and stick the HSF right onto it...The easy/lazy way...
*
how to determine whether it is too thin or too thick? normally i just apply TIM as thin as possible but not until can see the surface of the processor.

i dont think that is called lazy/easy way. it is the recommended way by AS5 website. hehe... but i put some TIM on the processor and used my credit card to make it evenly on the processor and cotton bud to remove excess TIM on the side of the processor.

Yes, the "string" method applies for dual core processors such as Conroe, PressHoT, X2 and FX62.
"Rice" method is for single core and exposed cores.

Anyways, I still don't think getting a credit card to flat the TIM is a good idea. Why not let the heatsink flatout the TIM?
*
used to it already... last time saw alot of guai low said need to spread the tim on the processor. the best way is used credit card to do it.

Yes..actually you can use the same method I described earlier with cotton soaked in solvent or brushed down with solvent, depending how messy.I'm only afraid if there's any electrolytic capacitor below the GPU chip, it there is, have to be careful not to allow solvent to drip underneath the capacitor. Nevertheless, after cleaning, leave to dry up for a while before powering it up. SMD chips are ok to be washed in solvent.

Actually there IS a proper PCB cleaning solvent for this kind of job. Its VERY EXPENSIVE!, but the perfect solution in cleaning jobs.

Hey guys!. Since you're all into messing your rig and DIY'ing.. its worth go practice with some old or kaput CPU and graphic card. Practice makes perfect and the stuff don't cost a lot. Sooner or later, more experts here!..good luck!  hands.gif

may i know what is the proper way and how to define expensive? hehe..

man the credit card way is a huge common misconcepttion.... if u use ur credit card u introduce trace amounts of imourities that will cause a decrease in performance... best if use the rice or string method as i posted earlier.... lots of guilow is refering to the days when the cores of cpu was very big... maybe the oldschool procs....
*
hmmm.......... i will try out the rice method next time..

true... convinient and inexpensive way to do so. haha...

Will definitely try this out when i got my hands on the AS5 soon..Hopefully it will be better than my stock Zalman paste that comes with my Zalman HSF..
*
you can get a better result that is for sure.. since its high performance paste, STG1 also lost to AS5 smile.gif

lol..thats why i doubt myself in calling the STG1 the "high performance" thermal paste..Well, hopefully i can test it out when it arrives..Maybe will take sometime though..

haha.. moderno have stock for as5 already, get from him lo.

I already did but too bad i cant test it on my system yet.I should only be able to do that after Xmas.I really did think of getting the STG1 myself and test it on my system as well. But considering the price tag, and comments made, it seems like a waste. The only doubt i have was would the STG1 works better with a Zalman HSF...
*
want to buy my zalman stg1? i only used twice on my processor.. hehe.. selling cheap if u want to try it..

QUOTE(wsmin @ Dec 19 2006, 07:16 PM)
as5 is available at czone as well.....suddenly lots of as5 stock appear rclxms.gif

Something bad happened when i took off my northbridge cooler yesterday. The stock Zalman paste that come with my nb cooler which was only applied for maybe 1 month+ had hardened and stick to the nb.Clean it off using TIM remover. The one thing i was not sure is that is it usual for TIM to hardened so quickly (in around 1month) or the Zalman paste is really that cheapo?
*
Rock hard? or just dried up abit? TIM dont really harden, it meant to be stay in liquid form.

Its not rock hard but it cant be removed from the nb even by wiping it out.As well as the bottom of the nb cooler..Needed to use alchohol to remove it and its way hard..Not sure what happened though..luckily i bought the AS5 as a replacement...
*
oh then it is normal.. some TIM will get harder than normal. nothing to worry about. of course it is highly recommended to use third party TIM for better result smile.gif

lol..Then i must be over reacting cause i just applied the TIM around 1month+ ago and i was surprise it was already that hard..lol..currently using some kind of silver TIM that my cousin got for me from Hong Kong.No brand though as my AS5 is still in KL and i am away...
*
dont too worry... if your TIM not working as it should be, you will notice a raise in your temp. if nothing happen, dont worry too much

Does every TIM need time to sinked in like the AS5 or some will straight perform when applied?
*
nop... TIM like arctic ceramic dont need sink in. only high end stuff like arctic silver 5 or zalman stg1 need :0

wait.correct me if im wrong but i thought using AS5 for gpu core isint recommended?cuz the core doesnt have an IHS and AS5 is like metallic and may short circuit the whole card if the as5 touches other than the core? unsure.gif
*
you are correct in some sense BUT if you applies the as5 carefully, your card will be fine. remember to use the a drop of grain method when applying the as5.

articlean expensive lah..rm25 compared to the swan alcohol rm3 laugh.gif btw the alcohol wont short circuit the board rite if it touches the pcb? unsure.gif that's the main part im afraid off laugh.gif
*
though it wont short circuit your board but it will do a minor damage if you leave it too long. try not to spill alcohol on your comp.
