Im working on a product design , 2 bottles of aroma theraphy and one paper bag design. But the problem is , I dont have any diploma or anything. Plus my client is my ex's mother !! She asked me to do her a favour and of course she'll pay me $$.

I sat down with her, had a discussion and she told me that she'll bring this product for an international market ( malaysia , indonesia , brunei -- yeah sounds like a big project ) I asked my so many people who also in designing industries they suggest me to put like 1K. Should I ? In my mind I wanted to put only RM600 for 3 designs.

1 more thing , in the same time , Im working on this painting ( acrylic ) for my lecturer. Went to his house , do some measurement and all. Decided = 55 x 34 inch. Kinda big , and its a contemporary painting. I have no idea bout putting the prize. I've a friend , who also doing the same project , for his living room and the prize he put like RM500 ++.

I dont know , how do u guys put a prize on your design and painting ? Its kinda hard when your client is close to u.

Help me designers ! icon_question.gif

juz give ur price.. need some standard or else after this ur design always cheap2 one..
packaging is very important for product. use for a long term... and like branding oso.

for big company i think 500 for each design ist not too much  thumbup.gif
* ur ex-mother comp or what??

in my opinion, put the price that you comfortable with... dont put high price if you dont think your artwork value that high, and dont put your price too low if you think you deserve more... basically, putting price on your own artwork/design is kinda subjective because its your work... you value it yourself... put a range for you minimum payment to be received and maximum price so that it wont affect you and/or your client... wink.gif

i asked a few people ... they just put their price .. but then , they all got diploma , degree n above , plus they got experience also ..

but im a freelancer .. i seldom design product.

it is very subjective .. gesshh ..
I just dont hv the guts the put high price..

Dont put to high if u r not confident with ur own design. Every designer got their own value depend on experience & artwork quality. Give them a confidence on ur artwork.

RM500 if u can give a gud design.. sure thet dont mind.Everything is confidence on ur own artwork & clear explanation to them.

I charge brochure & signage design only RM4500. They immediately agree..
so ..think twice.ok
*
thank u 4 ur support bro , appreciate it. 4500 ? waaahh !! gesshh .. thats alot of money for student like me bro! but when it comes to money , never enough one . hehe .. they like my design FYI.

bro but you say everything 1 k is too low man....and dont take those got diploma , degree n above ppl to compare...some their diploma or degree dont know come from where...some thier college or uni work ask other ppl do wan...... i even met a degree ppl from design field and dont know how to do design ... some more need ppl without diploma or degree all self learn to teach them..... dam malu
*
really ?? yeah ure totally rite i guess. artwork is more important than a diploma or degree. i used to take graphic design last time but i quit already. I only got basic skills , but im confidence with my idea.

QUOTE(dinodog_Jr @ Dec 20 2006, 06:32 PM)
who care bout diploma, degree or self-taught.

In this field, we care bout quality works.. Show them ur strength & keep their mouth shuts.

Measure the time & materials u need to complete this project. U might need to face some modification to a final image. U can tell em Rm1k including minor changes for twice before deadline. Please specify ur minor changes will cover which area. It's ur painting. Do the adjustment by urself.

If u feel paiseh bout RM1k, make it lower. If the client very happy, they might probably give u a little more. Or looking for u for the next project.

I got this one time charging ppl quite low in a web designing. After he looked at my sincerity in the final works. He plus a few hundred more to show his cherish into my sincerity.
*
thanks man !! i went to c them just now , they like it. They asked 4 a little changes, some wordings n small2 stuff. layout everything is ok. they love it.
And somemore , they asked 4 another paperbag design for another product ? do u guys think that they're trying to pijak my head ?

so now i got :

2 product design ( bottles and boxes )
2 paperbags'
1 logo

and i still have this "softhearted" on charging them , since they become more close to me , they even gave me free products to try , as a souvenir. doh.gif

sounds pretty cool.U might get ur first long term client from now on~

give them ur best quality.

Artist or designer's job is neva show them ur unsincerity. Better than u regret later.

Plus, u can still compiles ur works into a portfolio. so, it is no harm to do ur best for them. It is for the sake of ur future's career in another point of view.
*
thanks bro ! gonna keep that in mind ! biggrin.gif

hie bobba..  smile.gif congrates on getting your first freelancing project.. i agree with everyone that charge based on your skills.. dont go to high if you dont think you deserve that much and not tooo low so we can mantain the standard of us designers.. however.. charge a bit lower is kinda ok.. above all, in my opinion is buat keje betul2 and make them happy.. they can be long term clients and they may even recommend your services to others..

good luck! for your first project.. getting 1k is ok..

one more thing.. try getting 20-50% payment upfront.. those clients who are willing to do that, u know they are professional and sincere.. ive done one freelance, been published for international front cover.. and didnt get paid smile.gif
*
thanks dude ! appreciate it . ya , i asked for the upfront payment.. still no answer.
hope dat they're professional ..
ure right, ive to establish my name first .. i gues , hehe biggrin.gif
sorry to hear that u dont get paid on ur previous project ..
gesshh .. that kind of people also got .. haiya..

it's pretty "common" culture at Malaysia. So, best is u askin for downpayment.

And before u submit ur final works. Watermark every pages. After they complete the final payment, u will submit them a clean version of ur work.

U no need to do this if u r very confidence wif em.
When matters involve money, everything could goes twisted.
*
watermarks ? ouh , never think of dat.
thousand thanks bro for the great idea.
i trust them , but who knows rite. just incase...
