I know this sounds crazy, however, i have a notebook with a cracked LCD, and since its too expensive to replace them, i tot of gutting out all the parts and making it into a desktop.

Planning on making a custom casing for this. Is this possible ?

Alrite sounds cool, will need to figure out how to solder out the powerbutton, making the monitor start without need to press Function+f5,

Has anyone done this before? I tried googling, didnt see anyone do this... ^^"

Of course it's possible.. just need a lot of planning and figuring out what does what... figuring out the pinout for everything.

It's gonna be a major project.

Hope you go through with it though..it's sure hell's gonna be interesting to see.

Try this:
1. Connect your laptop to your CRT/LCD monitor
2. Turn the power on
3. Close the lid immediately.

If it displays on the monitor, then your only problem is to find some way to start your Laptop without opening your lid, assuming the power button is only accessible by opening the lid.

Most laptops come with external serial/USB/PS2 ports, so it shouldn't be a problem to connect everything & run your laptop as a CPU alone biggrin.gif

...actually, I've done this before tongue.gif Connect my monitor, keyboard & mouse to the laptop & set the BIOS to 'turn on with password', meaning the Laptop turns on when I key in a certain key sequence on the keyboard. Sweet, huh? B)

so far.. nothing has been planned yet. Here are the issues that i forsee will be important.

- making the mobo to detect the external monitor im gonna connect without pressing FN+F5 (most important)
- a usb keyboard that has the button FN(function) if mobo cant detect external monitor.
- extending out the start button. (soldering, i suck)
- making an extension of the cdrom connection (currently hotswap)
- increase powerbrick to high powered. might wanna put fan in custom casing.
- creating custom casing ^^" - def. using arcylic. I have mdf wood, might wanan consider that also... (my craftmanship sucks also)

I wonder if i missed out anything...

I suppose you'll be using the "notebook" as a file server or download machine of sorts right. Getting around detect external monitor without the FN key is gonna be a b1tch unless you're a bios genious.

My suggestion is to control the "notebook" via remote desktop wirelessly or via cross cable. I'm doing the same with Project Sumpron.

No point having so many sets of monitors and keyboards around right

Speaking of whcih....Why not just re-use the notebook keyboard? Something like a flip open keyboard or something.

You just gotta do an extention cable..the pinout for notebook keyboard is ok lar.. 24 pin niah...simple.

QUOTE

Depending on design (don't even know what notebook you're talking about here).. if the power is on a separate daughter card with all the hotkeys and such...than that's gonna be a MAJOR b1tch as well.

However, it can be gotten around with some clever mechanical "design"

QUOTE

Don't bother on this one... leave it on the same place. Ber-billion pin.

QUOTE
- increase powerbrick to high powered. might wanna put fan in custom casing.

Doesn't work that way dood...ur mobo (or via a separate board) determines how much it can provide... Not the AC brick.. that just changes AC to DC.
