Hi all,
Just after 2yrs 4mths... my 65C8PTA has a mild burn-in. I didn't bought any extra insurance other than the standard 2 years from LG and here is my story. At first, I thought was just some mild image retention and so I just run the "pixel refresher" feature in the TV. Manual pixel refresher didnt start or couldn't start even after leaving the TV off for overnight. Error message was the same "TV was switched on before pixel refresher could complete". This bugged me for couple of weeks as I suspected it was faulty and the auto run feature too which eventually exacerbated the issue. The image retention is not noticeable on a total black or white screen. Only noticeable on other colors. Finally decided to call LG and booked an appointment and will incur a RM150 fee. Oh well, I agreed to pay, else what can I do? Technician came and confirmed what I dreaded most, it's a burn-in. The burn-in was caused by watching Hearthstone gameplays over youtube but no longer than 1hr a stretch as most YT clip only lasts about 10-15mins and I do watch accumulatively a few hours a day of such clips at HDR "Strong" settings and in betweens, ASTRO, movies, channel surfing other YT contents etc. Anyway, the technician took some pictures of the issue and told me he'll raise a report and hopefully can get a discount on the panel replacement. For that 10 mins or so of him reaching to that diagnosis, cost me RM150. I'm not pissed about the RM150. Panel replacement????!!!! WTF!!!!!! I mean seriously??? All the LG OLED marketing of occurence of burn-in under normal usage would be rare. Below is an excerpt in LG website. "OLED Image Retention or Burn-In: Burn-in and image retention are possible on virtually any display. However, with an LG OLED TV, any risk of burn-in or image retention have been addressed through the use of technology that not only helps protect against damage to the screen, but features self-healing properties so that any short-term image retention that may occur is quickly rectified. It is rare for an average TV consumer to create an environment that could result in burn-in. Most cases of burn-in in televisions is a result of static images or on-screen elements displaying on the screen uninterrupted for many hours or days at a time – with brightness typically at peak levels. So, it is possible to create image retention in almost any display if one really tries hard enough. And even if image retention does occur from extreme usage, it can usually be mitigated within a short period of time by turning the display off for a while, and watching a few hours of varying content (such as your standard TV watching and channel-surfing). Additionally, LG OLED TVs come with special features and settings to preserve image quality and prevent burn in and image retention. First, there is a Screen Saver feature that will turn on automatically if the TV detects that a static image is displayed on screen after approximately two minutes. There are also three options (available in Menu setting > Picture settings > OLED panel settings) that can be used to preserve image quality. The first of these is the Clear Panel Noise feature that preserves the quality of the image on the display panel by resetting the TV so that it clears the pixels. This feature can be turned on when needed within the settings mentioned above. The second feature that can be employed is the Screen Shift feature which, moves the screen slightly at regular intervals to preserve image quality. A third option is the Logo Luminance Adjustment, which can detect static logos on the screen and reduce brightness to help decrease permanent image retention." https://www.lg.com/us/experience-tvs/oled-tv/reliability The techinician noted on the hours used on the TV. It was 6.7k hours usage and he said this "Sir usually about 7k hours time to change panel." I was shocked obviously. I asked him are you sure about this????? Nevertheless I didn't believe him but he did add that this is the most common issue - burn-in after 7k hours of usage. I dont know how much pixel refresher could actually fix if it was able to run in the first place, however i doubt pixel refresher could do much as burn-in = change panel. I did ask the technician about roughly how much to replace the panel. He said for 55", it's about RM5k not sure about 65". He lost me after that, I lost myself later... Well I do understand the "fragile"-ness of OLED but but but.... ahhh nevermind. Some might argue that I asked for it for watching too much Hearthstone game plays then again thats not the point is it? Point is, with OLED, you can't watch anything that has static picture e. g Hearthstone hero frame, if you even call 15mins clips long. Speaking of that, I watch ASTRO for hours on end too. The channel logo doesnt cause this burn-in as far I can tell. Why does watching 15min clips of Hearthstone hero frame does? As much as I love OLED TV, I won't be buying another or even get my panel replaced for RM5K (minimum, as I haven't got the replacement quotation). Probably look at QLED intead.
