My TV is Android based. So currently Kodi is installed directly. Just wondering if it's better to use external box with more RAM for better buffering etc.
*
External box is a better choice.
Better to get media box with "Android TV"
If you never experience "Android TV" before,
then you should try it.
There's 2 you can choose from-
The high-end Nvidia Shield TV-1K plus(not necessary if not a gamers)
And the affordable Mi-box-RM300+
2GB ram is more than enough.

Maybe my 1st post was not so clear. So, I'll be specific.
My current TV is running on Android 6 Marshmallow (sony 65w850c) having 2GB RAM & 8GB storage. I install Kodi directly from playstore and install video add-ons as per normal. Key-in those address etc.

So far, I have no problem watching movies, TV series but last week, I was watching SkySportsNews (Live TV) on EPL Transfer Deadline day, it didn't go well.

10 seconds play & it starts buffering. I need to stop the stream & play it again. PQ/AQ of the stream is good. I'm not sure the problem lies with

a) The stream itself. (because of live stream?)
b) Internet Connection (Unifi 30).
c) The TV (hence the thinking whether should I get an external box instead).

Kodi cache is set to auto clean each time Kodi starts.

your sony tv is using google ANDROIDTV, same as that found in some boxes.

what u experience with live sports streams on kodi is normal whether with TV direct or box.

becos skysports have sworn they will block and stop these live HD streams, esp EPL.

they have taken a few people to court in the UK already.

google to read all the news.

other than live sports streams, the rest are OK.

there are ways to get them, but will require VPN, extra cost, some work.

some people may also say they can still get it free... but for maybe 10 mins... after that, they start to buffer.

live sports is billion $ biz, the owners will not sit idly and let everyone watch for free!

if u don't mind SD, u can try mobdro - the channels work good usually.

as for whether a separate box is better than the tv, i will say if u know how, there is no diff.

the androidtv in yr tv is about the same as the average 2/8 gb or even 2/16 gb android box.

not as good as those premium ones with super audio or complex videos capabilities.

better than those low end that can't do astrogo, hyppewhere and ilfix like yr tv can.

precisely.

My unifi is located at second floor connected Lan cable to Half Smart TV which can watch hypptv (Iptv box) like your android Box.
My Smart TV at first Floor, link to soundbar which i can enjoy listening music via my smartphone or SmartTV youtube, is connected via WIFI using Unifi (less cabling work)
At Third floor is Multimedia via Wifi as well.

I m not downloading any movies, but
I m streaming movie via SmartHub apps which have build in Youtue, web browser, Amazon Prime Video, Hypptv Everywhere, netflix, iflix, FB, skype, Samsung's AllShare, Accuweather, TuneIn; one of the best applications for listening to online radio stations (worldwide), so many, watch drama series movies , etc Too many apps cannot remember.
sometimes, mirroring to my SmartPhone as well.

cannot finish watching those series movies,

Therefore , I NO NEED KODI biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

there is truth in what u say.

kodi is a big powerful app but is only as powerful as the addons.

as the authorities clampdown on the illegalities of the addons esp live streams, the usefulness has declined.

and as the addons come and go, need replacement, updates, etc... a lot more work to keep up to get something - tiring.

after a few years using it, i started to walk away... now using it only for 1 or 2 addons.

at the same time, standalone apps have improved and some are very good now - simple, fast, stable and in HD.

u listed some of those; they are many more, of course.

so, to each his own - use whatever app, addon or method that u find best!! biggrin.gif

I'm new to Kodi/ Android TV box. Don't have smart TV at home either. Don't subscribe to Astro. Want to try but yet to purchase any android TV box. So, I try using my old laptop to experiment.

Last night I partition a very old laptop (Core Duo T2400), installed Remix OS, and then installed Kodi. After trying for 2 hours, finally succeeded in adding Icdrama and stream movie with 4M streamyx line.

Tomorrow contractor will come to install Unifi lite. I plan to install Astro on-the-go (get my relative to register). I saw this tutorial https://barzrul.com/tips/watch-astro-tv-sho...ine-legally-756

But, the tutorial doesn't mention about add-ons to Kodi.

Want to ask - what's preferred method to watch Astro on Kodi?
