I'm looking to buy a new laptop.

Price Range: RM 2,000 - RM 6,000
Screen Size: 15 -17 inches

Storage: -Don't need excessive storage (i.e. 500 GB/ 1 TB HDD is a huge overkill), 200 GB of storage is more than enough
-Would favour SSD or a mix of SSD and HDD (i.e. 250GB HDD + 128GB SSD is a nice balance) but not necessary

Performance: handle games like Dota 2, StarCraft II with minimum 60 FPS and above
(hopefully, the average FPS is much higher around the 100-120 FPS range)

Miscellaneous: Would greatly favour a minimalist design. Clean, uncluttered laptop.
Heavy concerns with overheating, current dying MackBook Pro overheats to 70 80 odd Celsius for CPU and 60-70 for GPU at maximum performance
(The bottom of the laptop actually scalds my thighs when I rest the MBP on my legs)

Know any laptops that fit some of the criteria above?
Thanks smile.gif

Currently using a dying MBP 15" which is about RM 5800 back when i got it. It is now RM 9000.
No way I'm spending close to 5 figures for a laptop. I figured with such a splurge I can get many folds a better laptop for that price.
So yeah, realistically RM 5000 but would stretch it if it's worth the money (i.e. SSD's and what nots)

Not gonna get anything below RM 2000 which might just get oudated the moment I step out the store (jk)
P.S. The Illegear guys did pm me. btw smile.gif

Your budget is weird, from 2k to 5k. That is a huge differences.

Within your budget top up a bit up to around 6k, you can get decent laptop which come with Nvidia Geforce GTX 970M, for example the Illegear Z5.

GTX 970M for me is far than enough for the moment, if you want more higher speed you can go for GTX 980M or even the desktop edition GTX 980 for laptop, but that cost RM 8k to RM 10K and above already.

1TB HDD is not huge overkill! Even 2TB is not enough -- for me at least.

Try out MSI series or Illegear such as MSI GE series and Illegear Z5. For comparison with Z5, try GE62 2QF. Both can have a blend between SSD and HDD, but Illegear allows more customization. If you insists to get low capacity HDD, maybe Illegear has it.

Hmm, maybe rephrase it as "budget range/ price range" I guess?
Everyone's saying Illegear. Thing is, this is the first time I'm hearing about this brand though. Are they good? or is it similar to Razer and Apple where I'm paying mostly for the brand.

Once again, first time hearing of Cyberforge. Quick glance at their website and it's suspiciously similar to Illegear, down to the customisation details and description.
Unlike Illegear though, the Cyberforge website is badly coded and atrociously designed, and bad design unfortunately extends to their laptops by the look of things.

Your budget is too low for such specs.

What budget would you reckon is suitable for such a laptop?

Best read thus far, impressed you picked up on my inclination towards the SSD-HDD balance with less emphasis on high capacity HDD.
The files I frequently access are stored in online clouds. Presently, my entire media storage is in iCloud. (planning to switch away from Apple with this laptop purchase though)
So I guess what's left are a couple recent downloads, CS5, MS Office, AutoCAD and my games (games around 15-20 GB tops)

MSI gaming laptop was the first thing I had in mind (after MacBook Pro's of course smile.gif just can't for the love of god figure out what's going on with their products page.
Way too many laptops with similar specifications, no distinction between one laptop and the next and no obvious pricing for comparison.

Another Illegear recommendation, hopefully you guys aren't paid to do this haha. On a more serious note, absolutely love how they offer personalisation on a laptop but there's this thread
http://boardreader.com/thread/Asus_G751jt_...39zcX21g5f.html
regarding the Illegear S5 being almost RM 1000 more expensive compared to a counterpart with the exact same specifications.
Definitely willing to pay a premium for their customisation service but at a discrepancy of RM 1000, does sound a lot like paying for the brand (hint: apple, razer)

A lot people recommended it because it is really great, I no regret buying it and I also dunno this brand until people recommended it.

We just happily own it and share it, not paid to recommended it, wonder can we get a paid, haha! Just kidding.

Is Illegear more expensive? I don't think so, that site is 1 year ago, no idea that time, but now definitely it is the most valuable.

I didn't pick Cyberforge because their website is badly coding as you said, unprofessional at all, also Cyberforge is Aftershock from Singapore but rebranding to Cyberforge at Malaysia from what I know, I believe it is good as well, just the site design make me run away.

Illegear and cyberforge(aftershockpc) carry mostly the same products..clevo based laptop except the Z5.
I bought cyberforge obviously because it very much cheaper with the same specs and the stock basically taken from the reputable clevo distributor which is aftershockpc.

The review for the same s15/s5 model or whatever it is called https://youtu.be/9xMDIcTW5g8

MSI is famous in gaming laptop. u can check MSI GE62 6QC or GE72 6QC, this model c/w Nvidia GTX960 GPU that can handle a lot of online and offline games, built in extra SSD slot (allow u to upgrade without taking any HDD), built in cooler boost 2 system (provide cooling system and thermal solution). for more information, you can check on MSI website.

you may consider MSI GE72/62 6QC.. their cooler boost 3 is much more better, using more designated pipes to draw the heat away

Coming from a MBP, you can consider the MSI P-series notebooks ranging in price from RM4,000+
It has the usual specs like i7-6700HQ and Nvidia GTX 960M which should handle your games in FHD reso.
(check out the GPU benchmarks here http://bit.ly/1DgMV5l)
PE60 is 15.6" while the PE70 is 17.3"

Other things you might note on the MSI P-series
- Silver Metallic cover (closest in design to MBP i guess laugh.gif )
- supports DDR4 so you can upgrade till 32GB using 2 slots
- has 1x PCI-E Gen3 m.2 SSD slot which is backward compatible so you can upgrade your SSD
- 1TB HDD spins at 7200RPM so good for temporary storage of stuff
- Cooler Boost 3 technology with separate CPU/GPU heatpipes and dual fans

Happy Shopping an all the best! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif
