I have been wondering why many of my old W7 machines unable to activate W10. Oh well, back to W7 since I have the restore DVDs.

yes, it's closed last month, officially. the free upgrade from w10 to 11 is still valid.

you had 8 years to do that. i'm surprised that you can still miss it.

i only found out today doh.gif

got an older laptop that still works from someone else, i tried upgrading and it went through but activation not valid. Then the go back to windows 7 does not appear, i was thinking the installation was bugged, clean install win 7 and then try to upgrade again and failed miserably.

and then i am here...

this time the go back to windows 7 option is there so i will just restore it...

is there any reliable antivirus still supporting windows 7? maybe a browser as well, since chrome already dropped support for windows 7...

you should look it up with search engines for antivirus with w7 support. i believe there are still few that do that.

i mainly use the built-in windows security.

unfortunately mse for win7 already eol, may try bitdefender or avast if still function.

On a second tot, even if unactivated, seems like restricted for personalisation setting like back ground only.

For the better security, just use with restricted functions until it die may not be a bad idea

ok.

ok you didn't have a clone copy of your w7. well, you can use it in restricted mode, or just install other os, like linux. old laptops/pcs can be made to serve different purposes at home.

after a few generations of pc upgrades, a lot of things can be offloaded to these old pcs, e.g., download, work storage, long-term storage, etc. just turn them on when needed.

i encounted error and then followed that tutorial. that was when i found there's another WinRE partition. looked like windows update created another WinRE but the new one didn't have enough space either. i read one suggested solution was to increase WinRE partition to 750mb. that solved it. i also deleted the old WinRE partition and then moved the unallocated space towards primary and the new WinRE.

that's most probably you did an upgrade previously, instead of clean install. normally a clean install after 'diskpart clean' on a dedicated os disk will have one winre partition only.

right, just expand the winre partition to 750mb or more will make the windows update installed properly.
