Well, my personal take home from Cafe M'sia 2018 are the following:
1. Got to taste a primo quattro latte from coffex and it tasted quite good (RM92/kg)
2. Got to finally taste illy coffee latte. been curious about this product ever since lavazza
3. Nescafe is going into whole beans and full auto. taste wise, not here, not there.

didn't pay too much attention to hardware/machines though..

Watch Nestle. They recently acquired Blue Bottle of US and looking to penetrate the specialty coffee scene. In what manner though, that's to be seen
*
Good info on Nestle there.. Managed to spot their Nestle Professional Milk(uht) at a local bakery a short while back. Have you tried their regular "Just Milk" UHT? they froth well and the foam retains pretty well for a UHT i'd say..

Thinking to invest a non-pressurize single boiler (double boiler is out of by budget), Wellhome KD130 is in my list now since it is cheaper compare to other imported brand. Anyone can share their experience with wellhome espresso machine?
*
Hi, not often the name Welhome is mentioned here in this thread.
How do you find out about KD130? And what are your considerations at selecting it?
My full setup consisted of Welhome machines/gear.

Did not manage to spot good deals at Cafe Malaysia.... beans wasn't cheap
Liked the Linea Mini La Marzocco though...

..but was in kind of rush though

Anyone got good deals?
*
Cafe M'sia is not fully catered to end-consumers. Thus, retail-advantage beans/machines are very hard to come by.
You may still find very limited <RM100/kg roasted beans, but mostly in 1kg pack.
Are you interested in Chang Mai/Rai beans?

Thus far, I've noticed that local roaster is starting to bring in Doi Pangkhon honey washed at RM40/200g.. They aren't exactly cheap, circa RM200/kg (plus shipping), but i gathered it's much better than Doi Chaang (As they started to mix non-thai arabica into their product, apart from the not-so fresh packaging)

Previously we preferred Pacamara..

I am using ZD15 grinder. Honestly I would say it is good at its price. Since they are doing well in grinder, was thinking their brewer could be good too?

Which unit you are using at the moment?
*
KD130 was used to be below RM1k and am not too sure about it's current availability and pricing. however, for the price you're paying, there is yet a commendable competitor to it. Mind you, KD130 runs on thermoblock(not a boiler) and it heats up pretty fast compared to boiler-based machines. it used a standard 58mm solid-heavy brass portafilter(this alone will beat all those pressurized local machines available in m'sia, with the exception of gaggia perhaps?). steam wise, it does really froth..

this make me wonder, perhaps not all ULKA vibe pump are exactly the same.. forget about 15bar or 20bar ratings.. if a machine can't properly forth milk, that pump is different/limited.. been trying to find out spec from ULKA but info are scarce..

the unit that i'm using is this:
Attached Image

you may check my previous post as i've done some review/feedback on both the machine and grinder..

Steaming has no dependency on pump i believe. It's purely the heating up of the water (boiler). Bigger boiler, boiling to higher temp (120C +) will generate the necessary steam pressure
*
Hhmmnn.. you're right and thanks for pointing it out.

Hi,
Would like to share with you guys that're looking for quality roasted beans within a limited budget.
The brand is Brasilia(Australia) and it's readily available at local supermart such as Jaya Grocer(e.g Sunway Pyramid, Citta Mall, etc); sorry if you're living outside of Selangor/KL region.

We tried this bean out of curiosity and upon opening the pack, we noticed bean selection is commendably good(good size and whole). Despite the "production date", we managed to extract reasonably taste-discerning, milk infused drinks from it (can't say the same for strict espresso ya).

Price wise, it's below RM40(~38/39) for 500g. 500g is a reasonably good quantity for a home user ba..

We ran through 3 bags of this stuff before giving you guys a feedback..

Was saying that HN(@Ikano) was dumping the red smartgrinder. was so happened to be there. inspite of the price, i still have some reservations about this brand, Breville.. eye-candy, yes.. pragmatic/durability, doubtful..

guys i just bought the nescafe barista machine. Its awesome but can anyone recommend me what is the right fresh milk to make cappuccino or latte?

Cold Milk? or what brand? UHT Milk? I am confuse

I bought Dutch Lady Purefarm low fat high calsium milk but it taste weird.

What is the right fresh milk to make the above?
*
the words nescafe and barista seldom appear in the same sentence.. lol. it's a pod/capsule machine right?
i suppose the milk is internally "fixed" and you have very little control over it?

knockbox.. here is my 2-cents:

if you're using those sub-100gram, pressurized portafilter.. most likely your machine is not equipped with a 3-way solenoid valve and the coffee puck will mostly been wet/soupy.
thus it's much more easier to get rid of the wet/soupy puck.

it will be much harder to plonk out the dry coffee puck from a half-a-kilo portafilter. more so when the coffee puck is so stubbornly stuck on the heavy portafilter. it might dent most plastic bin or worst still, it may dent those expensive ims basket.

the rubber thingy on the knockbox is very helpful at absorbing the knock force..

it's a nice thing to have, especially if you're doing high volume work..

In case you don't know, i'm a home user here..

Some process it to be body scrub (cosmetic product)

Added to compost it will encourage worms to come in. Those worms also will work harder since caffeinated  laugh.gif
Also, it's a deterrent for snails. Donate them to any farmer or home gardeners

I'm trying to figure out a way to collect and hand off to a local farmer for our cafe
*
I did notice that pucks that stayed in the knockbox for several days would grow mold on it.. we tried to add onto plants once, but it taught us about soil's pH once coffee puck is added.. not all plants feel at home in lower pH.

I used Fresh Milk. UHT just has that weird taste...
Use to get Magnolia Fresh Milk (yellow one), but the price now super expensive! Lucky for me, I FINALLY found a supplier for the Magnolia Barista Milk! and its much cheaper than the Magnolia Yellow carton, well its the same price as the Yellow Magnolia before the price hike. Taste wise, its a bit similar, but I find it just a tad better than the yellow carton.
It really depends on the type of beans you use, based on my experience. For those that get stuck, I would usually just use the back of a teaspoon and just swoop a bit off the inner sides of the portafilter, like how you would do a Loh Mai Kai in a tin bowl  thumbup.gif  works all the time... then just dump the puck in the bin
*
Well, i would use the milk thermometer needle, draw a quick round on the rim of the portafilter then knock again.. some beans will leave the entire puck sticking on the grouphead shower screen.. that's more annoying lol

dried spent coffee ground is good for composting.
*
noob me.. i went straight into adding them onto the soil, by passing the composting part

QUOTE(ymeng85 @ Feb 8 2018, 01:46 PM)
I was told the mold is part of the process. The mold will help to break down the coffee alittle to make it less harsh to the soil (pH especially)
So you should not try to add direct to plants but rather mix into compost and only use when ready
*
good insight.. i guessed i accidentally killed a plant thinking the coffee puck is like "top soil" without going the composting part first.. bodo huh? sweat.gif

Lolz.... i guess you had knock before lock it into machine... It happen to me before once, and i knock it before lock it into the machine when i remove the portafilter, the whole puck just stick on the grouphead  laugh.gif
*
eerrr.. i don't have the habit of knocking the side of the portafilter with the tamper.. just tamp, rotate and final tamp.. dust off the loose grinds and lock..
however, i did noticed a peculiar pattern for having coffee puck sticking onto the grouphead upon releasing the portafilter.. the roasted beans are relatively stale. funny how not all stale beans will display this stick-up.. it's some particular beans that'll do it.. maybe ymeng85 can help shed some light on this? (some less fresh beans will continue to stay on the portafilter after extraction.. so this attribute is somewhat a mystery)
