Our importers have all the proper AP and licensing
But minimum orders through them is by bags (60-70kg) and only to registered companies. So I guess this makes things slightly troublesome for home roasters

If any of you would like small batches, PM me directly. I can bag up some for you - can help you with some mixed varieties as well

Mandhelings won't get any cheaper just because they're nearer (i was hoping so as well!) unless it's direct trade. Unfortunately because of the volume our importer is dealing with, they themselves have to get from an exporter which may be based in Australia, Singapore, Japan or even the US. So in that case, no difference where the bean was originally from.
My supplier pricing for the Indonesian is comparable to the American beans. So near yet so far  sweat.gif

Yes, like you said... it's sort of controlled by a company that contracts with plantation fella and sold to any importer/hub. That's why we home/small café can't get good pricing and more over the MOQ is crazy for us.

Oh.. i'm abit bz to go over to get from ya but surely soon. thumbsup.gif

Sounds like a French Press or maybe even an Aeropress would suit you
Very affordable means to make a good cup of black. Just need to pair with a decent grinder or even a hand grinder on the go

I would tilt more to Areopress with fine metal filter. This way he gets more control.. with my 2 cents only sweat.gif

Calling all owners of 600N grinders & equivalents!

Would like to compare notes....

There are a ton of photos available that show this grinder's burrs but what I couldn't find was any photos showing the grind adjustment mechanism.

Mine (currently) looks like this....

[attachmentid=9344262]

As mentioned in a previous post, my rubber bearing cover had torn earlier, and I have glued a rubber washer in its place.

I feel this aspect of the 600N is its Archilles heel. No way can a burr rotor keep perfectly level with its counterpart if this tiny bearing is the only point of contact.

What does yours look like?
*
I've been using this on and off for about 3 years ++ and it's still good. The rubber bearing cover is still in place (no tearing like yours). Btw, I'm not sure which adjustment mechanism you are talking about but the front screw in front of the knob is the adjustment to adjust the grind size. If that's what you mean by that and I know because I took the entire thing apart and notice when I screw too much, the grind size changes. So just adjust the screw.

They ship via USPS, even internationally. Because of this, I chose to go through a reshipper.

I placed my order Sunday night, and by 8am Monday California time they had issued the receipt and tracking number.

I just received notice from USPS that the package is on the delivery van, and will arrive within 12 hours, to Portland, Oregon...the reshipper's warehouse. After which the reshipper's (EziPoz) FAQ says the express service should deliver to Malaysia within 7 to 10 working days.

Will keep you informed!

Yeah Thanks, When I posted Flair here, I had some puke.gif incident and now only free to revisit on the shipping part. Anyway, 9/10 reviews are good.

I chose direct shipping instead and indeed Flair shipped out within a day and it is currently enroute to MYS. Lets exchange feedbacks when the coffee maker is here ya.

Nice... hope it will get here soon so we have locals to review too.

I have one question.

Currently I have 2 type of beans, Starbucks Ethiopia Sidamo and Reframe's Yirg... The Starbucks' is roasted super dark, I don't know what to do with it other than mix it with milk. The Yirg on the other hand is a lot lighter.

What happened is that, the super dark Starbucks' beans is grinded pretty easily that I have to use 7-8 steps from the finest on my grinder. While for the lighter yirg, I had to force it through 1 step from finest on my grinder.

How can that happen?

Simple,

Thanks. Super happy to hear that!  biggrin.gif

Its due to the porosity of the coffee. A darker roast has a more expanded cell wall structure which makes it more water absorbent compared to a light roast. And with absorption, you will also observe puck swelling, further closing down all water channels.

You can almost compare this to like passing water through flour vs through sand. At the same particle size, the flour would be exponentially more resistant to water flow
*

My very simple explanation to him would be the density of light, mid and dark roast stage. If you see green coffee beans, they are very dense/hard but as you roast them, they expands and the more it expands, the less density of the wall structure.

My 2 cents works? mega_shok.gif

Yes the AP continues to be a factor for us.
So we have to go through another middle man that imports it first and then we select from them. Hence the extra overhead
Not to mention the volume of home brewers are not yet at the level we see compared to other countries and I would say alot prefer variety (most wouldn't repeat the same bean type order but instead opt to try a different bean everytime) so we have to support that by taking in smaller quantities but more varieties instead. This means we don't get to enjoy the benefits from economy of scale. No bargaining power at all to the green bean sellers

The overhead that we incur to RnD (profiling) and human hours (we're not roasting large batches in automatic machines and just leaving it on the shelves till you order) means we have to keep margins at a certain minimum just to keep ourselves afloat  biggrin.gif
If we screw up a roast - curves not matching/not changing settings at the right time/gas run out/spills....all this goes to the rubbish bin
Small artisan style business is tough in Malaysia haha

Anyways, I would also encourage more learning and reading about origins, flavors etc.
It's not as simple to just compare price to weight. Not all coffees come from the same source and go through the same processing/sorting
Alot of the unique flavors come from terroir conditions - soil, weather, elevation + varietals (rare ones such as Sidra, WushWush, Gesha) combine to change the prices
End of the day, I much prefer to judge a price based on the cup quality. How unique and clear are the flavors as well as the level of sweetness and finish that you are getting
This justifies the price of green + price of roaster's skill

Additionally, I will be transparent here and give you guys real world example. Nothing to hide here anyways, the coffee commodity Coffee Price (C-Price) is a global available daily index:
Commercial grade screen size sorted to 17/18 screen size (large beans) Brazil - RM16/kg green coffee cost
Specialty grade midrange Ethiopia - RM40-50/kg green
Best of Panama/Gesha/Competition coffees/COE/New experimental processing  - Anywhere from RM300/kg to RM20,000/kg green (and want also not necessary can get, need to bid/auction/buy whole farm)

So............................can't just go with weight/price  sad.gif  sad.gif
*
rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif thumbsup.gif Really RM16/KG / RM40-50/KG I pray for such day to come.
