Hi Guys

Trying to find a way to extend my ultrabook storage via SD card slot (half size SDcard adapter with micro SD)
my Asus Zenbook UX305 and my brothers macbook air/pro.
Have not explore mini USB storage options yet, probably going to cost a lot and poor performance, and use up an USB port.

For anyone interested in discussing about microSD cards, price/performance
sequential read/write, random read/write
and
Trying to find a good micro SD card for my phone Honor 7

I have hijacked the below thread:
The SSD Thread V5, Solid State Drive

my initial findings with my own hardware
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry78460690

more info/reviews from the net which i have summarized
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry78463785

some guy in amazon provided good reviews
https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry78463810

Your feedback is appreciated

Dear Sifus,

Thank you for sharing your time & expertise here, it is really helpful for noobs like me to make better and more informed choice  thumbup.gif
I originally thought to get Illegear Z5 due to its relative value and positive reviews, however after further consideration i realize i probably won't be a heavy gamer, combined with the windows o/s purchase costs, the total costs became much higher than anticpated.

Recently the PORTABILITY of ultrabooks seem quite appealing to me while seemingly capable machines in their own right
ASUS Zenbook (high value for it's cost)
HP Spectre (the brown and champagne one just looks sexy)
DELL XPS13 (good reviews for windows ultrabook)

I'm still open to getting a laptop with larger screen instead of an ultrabook and my intended needs are as follows:

USAGE
Primarily Office Work with many tabs open, video streaming and it would be a nice bonus play the occasional casual DOTA2 (Max settings not a must)

It has to serve as my personal media hub, connecting multiple bluetooth devices and other hardware such as bluetooth headphones, monitor screens, speakers, keyboard and mouse, therefore the ability to control and switch between my devices is important (a good docking solution would be an option, the Dell Thunderbolt supported XPS seemed interesting)

Keyboard and Trackpad

SCREEN
High quality screen, 4k not really a must (unless it's highly advisable to get it)
Preferably Anti-Glare and Matte
Touch screen is nice bonus but not a must

CPU
Probably looking for at least an i5, but willing to consider the lower powered M-Chips

RAM
At least 8 GB

GPU
Dedicated GPU would be nice

PORTS
Ideally more than 2 USB ports and good built-in bluetooth

HDD
250 GB m2 SSD
500 GB SATA (not a must)

LOOKS & FEEL
Either sleek and subtlly sexy or more personality
I don't quite like the Lenovo Thinkpad look

BUDGET
5 - 6k and if interest free installment plan is attractive, can go abit more
O/S must be included preferably with MS office as part of the deal
If include good, capable Docking Solutions even better, can consider increasing the budget

Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW-FY029T *i7/8G/512G/GT960* (15” FHD) arrive in Malaysia not long ago.
http://www.lelong.com.my/25-01-asus-zenboo...7-01-Sale-P.htm

Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ Processor
8GB DDR3L RAM
512GB SSD
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX960M with 4GB GDDR5
15.6" 16:9 IPS FHD (1920x1080)
2.06 kg with Battery
2 years Asus Warranty

I have a Zenbook UX305FA Core M/8GB/256GB/1.2KG 13.3" FHD matt cost RM2900. I can play league of legend in FHD 1080 with low details/shadow with decent frames, Data2 is probably going to be more demanding and I dont think core m can handle it, maybe with 720p its ok, just google it.
I dont play LOL anymore but I prefer something fast/portable, Zenbook Core M suits my purpose as its fast enough for all my needs, heavy web-brousing and office applications dont see the difference with core M, i3, i5 or i7, core m is between a i3 - i5 laptop speed wise.
Another plus is this laptop is completely silent, no fans or hdd.

Its a shame Malaysia dont have the UX305 with version i5/i7 or i5/940M both 13.3" FHD/FHD+, more expensive tho but much cheaper then the Zenbook pro.

Brand :  Lenovo

Budget : Below 2K

Main Usage : Web browsing and photo/video editing

Concern : I'm looking for a portable laptop around 11"-12" , must be small and portability is my main priority. Not really demand on processing power, a celeron or i3 will do, 4gb is a must , and at least 128gb ssd. I found Lenovo Flex3 11 - 80LY000MUS is kinda fit my bill and citeria. Its around 350usd, but seems like this laptop is not available in malaysia. may i know is this laptop coming soon? or there is something similar?

thanks in advance!

I was similar situation with you,

My priority was in the order:
portability/light ie 11.6 or 13.3 screens
8GB ram (most laptops can be upgraded yourself with exception most ultrabooks)
FHD matt
SSD (most laptops can be upgraded yourself from HDD to SSD, need to know how to clone the hdd to ssd which is a hassle)
i3 or Core m or even i5

even for your requirements its probably impossible to find for under 2k in Malaysia market.
When i was searching few months ago, I found out there is an absolute lack in laptops with portability paired with decent CPU in the Malaysian, there go's your biggest problem.
Even overseas 11.6 screen are rare to find its paired with a i3 in recent years, it tends to be a celeron/pentium
and your 13.3 screens are expensive ultrabooks

I settle with a Zenbook UX305FA core m 5y10c,8gb,256ssd,13.3FHD matt, 1.2kg RM2900 - 2 year warranty (was still RM2600 mid 2015 when our currency was still strong) bought few weeks ago, this model has since been disconnected in Malaysia and very hard to find.

they have a new skylake version Zenbook UX305CA core m 6y30,4gb,128ssd,13.3FHD matt, 1.2kg @ RM2700 essentially half the ram and ssd and -RM200 less compared with the old model.
http://www.lelong.com.my/25-01-asus-zenboo...7-01-Sale-P.htm
this new skylake cpu is only little bit faster in single thread process compared with the old eg 2 vs 2.2 other wise no change except with Win10.

only few i can think of is:
Dell Vostro 5480 series are 14" HD screen only, 1.6kg, i5, gpu, hdd, 4gbram. but they are expensive RM3100 nowdays crazy it use be around RM2200, you also need to purchase an RM200 128gb sdd and upgrade

There was an Acer model(hard to find) from memory was around RM2400 i5,4gb, 128SSD, 14" but it was like 1.6-1.8kg not sure if its still in the market.

There is probably table or convertible 2 in 1 type but it will be paired with a celeron/pentium, but i doubt its going to be less then 2k.
eg http://www.lelong.com.my/25-01-dell-vostro...7-01-Sale-P.htm
1.5kg Dell Vostro V5459-1045SG-W10 *i3/4G/500G/W10* RM 2,173.00 but its hdd not sdd, need to upgrade yourself.

-------------------- update -------------------------
after re reading your post again, i relised you mention you are ok with a celeron, i initially though you only wanted a i3 or above.
now if you are ok with celeron/pentium then your budget of 2k is doable, but you most probably need to upgrade the hdd to ssd yourself, and most of these laptops have 2gb of ram, you need to spend another RM100 to upgrade to 4gb, need to confirm/supplier that ram is upgradeable, there are lots of netbooks nowdays ram is soldered in and not upgradable.
i can confirm the acer ecs 131 is able to upgrade ram upto 8gb, in fact this is the one i recommend for my sister. this model is very complicated the ram is located behind motherboard, you literally need to take the mobo out to do upgrade.

RM 1,038.80

http://www.lelong.com.my/25-01-acer-aspire...7-01-Sale-I.htm
not really worth this pentium is not that much faster then the celeron in single thread, unless you plan to do more multi thread application or need the laptop to fold 360 like the yoga series ie 2in1 or tablet form.
for me i would rather save the RM400 get bigger ssd and/or 8gb ram

Hi Sifuu!! Need your advice..

Brand : Prefer Dell / Lenovo..

Budget : RM 2.5-2.8k

Main Usage : Adobe, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Power point..(design + presentation)

Concern : Looking for laptop that could survive for at least 2+ years, portable (max 2.2 kg), 14" would do, able to handle the above job sufficiently.
Under my radar are:

1. Dell Inspiron 14 7447-21454G-W8 Laptop/ Notebook (i5-4210H, 4GB, 500GB, NV GTX850M, W8.1)
2. Dell Vostro 14 V5459-20452G-W10 Laptop/ Notebook (i5-6200U, 4GB, 500GB, NV 930M, W10H)
3. Lenovo U41-70 80JV00H3MJ 14" Laptop/ Notebook (i5-5200U, 4GB, 256GB SSD, NV N16V-GM, W10H)
4. HP Pavilion 14-ab123TX Laptop/ Notebook (i5-6200U, 4GB, 1TB, NV 940M, W10H)

Any better deal then the above?

Appreciate your advise.

Thanks.

good deal 256 SSD man!!!!, also its FHD and 2 year warranty.
there is an i7 version for just less then RM3000 not worth it.
upgrade your ram to 8gb and it will be even better especially you have lots of windows open.

the above software more cpu intensive rather to gpu

sorry for didn't elaborate well.
the 3D modelling is not extensive.
is just ACAD and design some softwares.
not going to use it regularly bcoz it is for my part time job.
most of the time will be streaming watching movies.

lenovo is slightly more expensive than the acer but i'm getting i7 for lenovo.
if i7 for acer it would be different price.
but lenovo quality is reliable right?
*
get the i5 and save money unless you really really need the speed

i7-5500U vs i5-6200U
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-5500...l-Core-i5-6200U

the i7 - U version is a joke man its the practically the same as i5, 2 Core with 4 Thread, its just marginally faster in speed, and has a label on your laptop which says i7 for siok sendiri only.

Now if it was the i7 with HQ version those are different class all together, 4 Core 8 Thread baby.
These are usually on more expensive laptops like gaming type.

my budget max is 2500 not willing to go beyond that.
thx for the info.
since i5 is sufficient for me do you think the model i mentioned earlier is good enough or you have other recommendation?
*
I saw someone mention a Lenovo that fits your budget few days/week ago. Dont remember model.
But i was surprised by its value, it has i5, SSD and maybe GPU and FHD.
Getting an SSD inside is soo sweet, just use a usb external hdd for your movies

Just courious does he need GTX 950m or 960m?
after all its dota2, csgo we're talking about there,
if 940m is enough then there are plenty of cheaper options out there

940m dota2 on ultra settings can get 36fps
