Not sure if A 640 has this mode, but think most cameras do have it

Turn to potrait mode..usually the icon is that of a person. Think what you want is the bokeh(blur surroundings) effect. Zoom in on the person you want to focus. Depress the shutter half-way to lock focus. Then press shutter all the way. You're done.

Good luck!

That's the limitation of PnS camera.

Try to do this, if possisble:

1. move as far away as possible, then zoom in on your subject.

2. Try to catch your subject when he/she is some distance away from the rest of the crowd.

Does your camera has Aperture Priority mode? If yes, set it to the lowest possible number.

It's something to do with Depth of Field (DOF). Rule-of-thumb, use small f number for small area to be sharp, the others blur and vice versa. Want to know the whys and whereofs of it, better you do some reading. Lots of useful links here to get you started:

hey mr canon a640.. i know what u want.. but that can't be achieved on a normal point an shoot camera that well.. it will only give u slightly very light blur background

but in can be easily done using any dslrs... this is called bokeh... all you'll need is a special lenses to do that...

see my sample here :
http://www.flickr.com/photos/prozio/271191800/
view my other photostream to check it out.

u can get a cheap bokeh lens which i'm using at around 300.. and it's well worth it cause the effects give u a totally different feeling...

being a previous a620 owner i know the limitations of point and shoot.. wink.gif

if you still have any questions can pm me..

PS and DSLR is also a camera, the term using in dslr is almost same with ur A640, bcause ur A640 also have the manual function to play with, u have the control almost like the dslr

In those site, i guess it already clearly explain what is Av mode (Aperture Priority mode), what is Tv mode (Shutter Priority mode), i guess u dint pay much attention on reading tat article but keen to finding the technique on how to make the background blur.

If u want a guide especially for A640, pls read the booklet tat come together with ur camera, it have all the basic guide tat u want to know.

The time when im using A400, no manual function to play with, but I also learn from DSLR site...

A640 is a great camera for beginner, enjoy ur shooting

for example in shopping complex thats so many people go shopping but me only wan focus 1 person and the person image so clear and around him become blur?

to answer ur question, by PS camera, the background cant be blur like wat u expected.

1. Turn to Av
2. Set the F-Value to the lowest
3. Stand quite a distance with the object
4. Zoom in, focus on the subject
5. snap without flash

it shud make the background a little bit blur...tat's the limitation for PS camera

another method tat u can try, but harder

1. mount the camera on tripod or a stable surface
2. Turn to Tv
3. Set shutter speed to 2second or 4 second
4. Stand quite a distance with the object
5. Zoom in, focus on the subject
6. snap without flash
7. ask the person stand still for 2second or 4second (depend on the shutter speed u choose.

now the background shud be blur very nice with moving ppl at the background...but the object and camera MUST NOT move until the shutter close again, else whole picture will be blur
