i'm thinking of burning my LOST collection into CD, each episode is about 350MB and the subtitles is in SRT format. Just wondering if there is any way i can make the subtitles working if it is played on VCD player?

Just buy a dvd player that supports AVI. It cost little these days. and it also supports ASS, SSA, SRT, TXT, etc....
You have better picture than a crappy vcd

Encoding the AVI with SRT will cause the quality to decreased (since adding filter will force you to start from scratch & later you convert again into MPEG for VCD compliant).

Instead, frameserving it using VDub/VDubMod into TMPGenc. So, you'll doing one job instead of two (adding subtitle & convert into VCD compliant).

I learn how to frameserving using VDubMod from here and here.

Using that guide, I create a VCD with hardsub (subtitle will be displayed all time). Software you need is VobSub, VDudMod (I have VDub but I familiar with VDubMod) & TMPGEnc. I assume you already intall the handler, have codecs & TextSub installed in the VDubMod plugin.
  • Load the AVI into VDubMod
  • Adding the subtitle *.srt using filter
  • Demux the audio as *.wav, Go to Steams > Stream List > Save WAV (choose your location). Then, disable the audio stream by click Disable (I'll explain later why).
  • Click File > Start frame server. A pop-up appear. Click Start. You need to give a filename here. Remember to include *.avi as extension so it should be like this "sample.avi" (Even it has *.vdr). Keep that frameserving box all the time !
  • Launch TMPGEnc. Load that "dummy" AVI. Check the stream type. You'll see it will be in ES (video only). Load the *.WAV that we demux before. Now it turn to System (video+audio).
  • Still under Stream Type click Load and load the VCD setting (PAL or NTSC).
  • Click start to begin the conversion
I demux the audio into WAV to eliminate 2 problems which I encounter :
  1. Audio/video is out of sync
  2. The final MPG have "hiccup" voice - not smooth during playback.
I just create this guide & screenshot special for you :

1 thing you need to make is the original source avi file
must be in good condition
if u dl or bt the avi file which is corrupt
most probably when demux n muxthe video and sound, the video n sound will not sync properly.

Error response :

1. Click NO
2. You don't have XviD codec installed either from codec pack or stand alone intallation. Maybe you only have ffdshow
3. Not exactly sure. Either not having XviD is culprit or something else. Try installing XviD & import the video again to confirm this error.

yup, not having the XVID VFW is the culprit, VDubMod need this to playback.

i'm frustrated with all kind of codec use in videos. to solve this, just install a codec pack (e.g. K lite Mega codec pack) will save the day.
