Hezbollah, Syrian Army Encircle Al-Zorba and Khan Touman in Southern Aleppo

user posted image

In matter of two months, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah – in coordination with their Iraqi and Iranian allies – have captured several hilltops, villages and towns in the Aleppo Governorate’s southern countryside, while also building a large buffer-zone around the provincial capital’s southern flank.

With the capture of 5 villages near Jabal Arba’een, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah have secured the contested area surrounding the villages of Tal Dadeen, Kafr ‘Abid, and Hamidah; this has forced the Islamist rebels from Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki, and Liwaa Suqour Al-Sham to retreat south towards safer quarters.

Later in the day, the real assault in southern Aleppo began: Hezbollah – backed by the 4th Division’s brand new T-90 tanks – launched a massive assault on the strategic towns of Al-Zorba and Khan Touman, killing several enemy combatants from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jabhat Al-Nusra before they would advance to the northern flank.

As a result of this latest push, Hezbollah and the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division are now situated at two different flanks (eastern and northern flanks), marking the advent of their besiegement of Khan Touman and Al-Zorba.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah are currently approaching zero hour for Al-Zorba and Khan Touman; if these towns are captured by the aforementioned pro-government forces, they will have effectively cutoff the main supply route from Idlib to Aleppo for the Islamist rebels.

Japan and the ‘Maritime Pivot’ to Southeast Asia

user posted image

QUOTE
Soon after the well-publicized U.S. Navy freedom of navigation operations (FONOPS) within 12 nautical miles of China’s artificial island built on the disputed Subi Reef, in late October Tokyo reportedly sought access to Vietnam’s strategic Cam Ranh naval base. This implies the possibility of more frequent SDF presence in Southeast Asia, not least having in mind Beijing’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea. Last month, Abe told U.S. President Barack Obama that Tokyo would be studying the feasibility of SDF activities in the South China Sea.

If they ever materialized, such operations will most likely be unilateral since Tokyo has clearly outlined its stance of not joining the American FONOPS. “At present, the SDF does not continuously conduct surveillance activities in the South China Sea, and we have no such specific plans,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference, adding that “we want to continue to study (what Japan can do in the South China Sea) as we carefully assess what impact the situation in the South China Sea poses to the security of our country.”

The question is whether Abe can enhance Japan’s maritime pivot to Southeast Asia by going down this path of creating a more regular SDF presence. Domestic, strategic and operational constraints would seem to undermine such aspirations.

Kalibr Cruise Missile: Russia’s Winged Incinerator at Work (VIDEO)

user posted image

QUOTE
By launching its first combat strikes from a submarine, Russia is demonstrating to the West that it now has a long-range cruise missile capability formerly monopolized by the US and its allies.

Unlike their Western analogues, the Russian cruise missiles, even those developed years ago, are all supersonic all, which meanings that they are able to penetrate the enemy’s missile defenses.

Russian military experts said that more powerful, faster and longer-range cruise missiles were now in the pipeline and would enter active service already before this the end of the decade is out.

The Pentagon, fearing Kalibr's ability to infiltrate air defense networks, constructed the JLENS aerial detection network around the Washington D.C. area to detect a so-called "decapitation strike" by nuclear-armed Kalibrs.

A Herculean Accomplishment: Lockheed Delivers Its 2,500th C-130 Hercules

user posted image

It is one of the toughest, most adaptable and significant combat aircraft in the world—the venerable C-130 Hercules. The type has been in production for a whopping 61 years, and yesterday Lockheed announced that it just delivered its 2,500th C-130, a HC-130J Combat King II destined to the 71st Rescue Squadron at Moody AFB in Georgia.

C-130s have been operated by 68 individual countries, and Lockheed reports that it has wracked up an amazing 22 million flight hours. These aircraft have served as everything from civilian cargo transports operating from rough fields around the globe, to airborne command centers, to deep penetrating special forces insertion platforms, to one of the most feared weapons ever fielded, the AC-130 gunship.

So, here’s a huge congrats to Lockheed Martin and the Marietta plant team for reaching an amazing milestone with an amazing aircraft. The C-130 has changed the course of history, and remains an American icon that does some of the toughest aerial jobs around the globe on a daily basis.

Breaking: Syrian Army Advances in Dara’a City as They Approach the Jordanian Border-Crossing

user posted image

Moments ago in the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade of the 5th Armored Division – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) – continued their advance along the Dara’a Al-Balad axis with the Al-Manishiyah Quarter, capturing as many as six building blocks near the Jordanian border-crossing.

According to a military source inside the provincial capital, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade and their allies are currently advancing southeast of the Al-Manishiyah Quarter towards the central sector of the Dara’a Al-Balad Quarter.

While one battalion from Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade pushes towards the central sector of the Dara’a Al-Balad Quarter, another battalion is advancing westward, where they are hoping to bypass the stiff defenses of the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades” and make their way to the Jordanian border-crossing that is located just a few kilometers away from the large city of ‘Irbid (Jordanian city).

If the Dara’a City border-crossing into Jordan is captured by the Syrian Armed Forces, they will have effectively cutoff the Islamist rebels from their primary supply line that begins in the Jordanian city of Mafraq; this city is also home to a large population of Syrians and CIA backed rebels.

Russia delivers up to 40 airstrikes daily to help Free Syrian Army fight terrorists - General Staff

user posted image

QUOTE
Warplanes of the Russian task force in Syria deliver from 30 to 40 airstrikes daily in support of the Free Syrian Army, Russia’s General Staff reports. Some 5,000 FSA troops together with the Syrian Army are on the offensive in Hama, Homs, Aleppo and Raqqa provinces.

The number of FSA personnel that have come over to the Syrian Army is constantly growing, Russia’s Defense Force Chief of Staff, Army General Valery Gerasimov, said.
QUOTE
He added that Russia’s task force in Syria is also supplying FSA units with “weapons, munitions and other material supplies.” In this way, Russia is “promoting the [Syrian] government troops and opposition groups joining efforts to defeat the terrorists,” the general said.

According to the General Staff, for the purpose of cutting the terrorists off financing, Russian jets bomb oil processing Islamic State- (IS, formerly ISIS) controlled infrastructure, such as oil refineries, oil pipeline pumping stations, oil tankers in the locations where they concentrate en route to the Turkish border.

SAS sniper in Iraq kills five ISIS jihadis with just THREE bullets: Marksman detonated terrorist's suicide vest with precision shot as group left bomb-making factory

user posted image

QUOTE
An SAS sniper was able to stop a group of jihadis launching a suicide bomb attack by killing the terrorists with just three bullets in a dramatic shoot-out in an ISIS-held part of Iraq.

The marksman, who joined the SAS a decade ago, potentially saved the lives of hundreds of innocent people by firing three well-aimed shots at the jihadists as they left a bomb factory near Mosul.

The sniper was given the go-ahead after the men were spotted leaving the bomb factory wearing heavy coats in hot weather – a sign they were trying to hide their suicide vests.

Are the Chinese seeking a second Africa ‘military base’ in Namibia? influential paper reports top level talks

user posted image

QUOTE
In November 2014, The Namibian said that talks were being held at the “highest” levels for the Chinese army to put up a base at Walvis Bay, the country’s only natural deepwater port, “in the next 10 years”.

This would be one of a string of bases that would rope in countries along the Indian Ocean such as Djibouti, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar and Seychelles to help China patrol key international maritime trade—and military— routes, it reported citing a Chinese media report.

China is involved in infrastructure and resource projects including uranium extraction in the southern African country, in which it also has a satellite tracking station.
QUOTE
In November, after months of coyness, China confirmed it was in negotiations with Djibouti to build a logistics hub for military operations in the strategically vital African country.

“This facility will help Chinese vessels to better carry out UN operations, like the escort missions and humanitarian assistance”, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a regular briefing.

Bloomberg news wire said Hong shied away from describing the centre as a “military base”, but the comments came after US general David Rodriguez, the commander of the US Africa Command, reportedly said that Beijing had signed a 10-year lease for the base, describing it as China’s first “military location” on the continent and that it would “extend their reach.”

US military's largest overseas base taking shape in Pyeongtaek

user posted image

QUOTE
The size of the camp will triple from 1,041 acres to 3,453 acres,” said Col. Holland. “There will be significant increase in population as well from 11,000 to 42,000.”

He said that when completed, the base will offer an improved mission command, improved protection for armed forces, more efficient base operations and better support for non-combatant evacuation operations.

Engineers and construction workers are attempting to complete the construction project on schedule.

But the camp still looks empty, with only two facilities including an engineering unit having been moved in so far. American soldiers were only seen intermittently on the road when reporters were given a tour of the huge base by bus.

Some of the roads are still unpaved dirt tracks, so the bus jolted and rattled over the rough ground. “People here love SUVs,” Col. Holland said and laughed.

The allies have been carrying out projects to relocate the USFK and return land to Korean people through two major plans ― the Yongsan Relocation Plan (YRP) and the Land Partnership Plan (LPP).

The YRP is to relocate the U.S. Yongsan Garrison in central Seoul including USFK headquarters and 8th Army headquarters to Pyeongtaek, while the LPP will consolidate 2ID from north of Seoul to Pyeongtaek.

Pyeongtaek is located 70 kilometers south of the capital.

Iraqi armed forces see chance for redemption as they close in on Ramadi

user posted image

QUOTE
For Iraq’s armed forces, and the Americans who are training and backing them, this is a particularly important fight. Here, the country’s Shiite militias are not taking part, and that gives the regular Iraqi military a chance to repair its image. The fall of Ramadi seven months ago struck a blow to the already tattered reputation of the security forces, and it highlighted flaws in the U.S. approach to supporting them.
QUOTE
Airstrikes played a large part in the advance here, soldiers said, raising questions about the army’s capability to push farther, particularly in areas with a high concentration of civilians, where air support is more complicated.

“Eighty percent of the battle finished from the air,” Asri said, pointing out a body crushed under a nearby palm tree.“We received only a little resistance. The airstrikes had the major role.”
QUOTE
But to the southwest, Iraqi special forces, known as the Golden Division, have seen more close combat, seizing control of the sprawling Tamim neighborhood last week. Having trained closely with the U.S. military, the division is considered the country’s most elite fighting force.

“These neighborhoods we know street by street, we know the houses,” said Lt. Gen. Abdul Ghani al-Asadi, head of Iraq’s special forces, as he spread out a map of the city at his office in Baghdad. There are about 600 fighters from the Golden Division involved in the operation, he said.
QUOTE
Asadi estimated that there are still about 1,000 Islamic State militants in the city, while U.S. officials have suggested that with 350 killed in the latest assault, they could number between 250 and 650.

In a briefing last week, Col. Steve Warren, a U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, cautioned that in an urban environment, a relatively small force of fighters could hold back a larger army “for some time.”
QUOTE
But the militants have dug underground tunnels, stockpiled car bombs and laced roads with explosives.

“Go and fight,” the Islamic State leader’s voice extolled his men over the walkie-talkie. “Either you will have victory, or you will be a martyr in heaven. Fight them, fight them, fight them.”

Syria regime, allies recapture key airbase near Damascus

Syrian troops recaptured a military airport and nearby town east of Damascus on Monday, more than three years after they were overrun by rebel groups, a military source said.

"The Syrian army has taken full control of the town of Marj al-Sultan and its airport in Eastern Ghouta," a rebel bastion east of the capital, the military source said.

Rebel groups seized the airport, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) east of Damascus, in November 2012.

Syrian Army Captures the Strategic Marj Al-Sultan Helicopter Base in Rural Damascus

user posted image

On Monday morning in rural Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard – backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Damascus City – imposed full control over the Marj Al-Sultan Military Airport’s Helicopter Base after a one month long and bloody battle with the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam).

According to a battlefield journalist in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade and their allies seized the Helicopter Base after breaking through Jaysh Al-Islam’s frontline defenses at the Helicopter Airfields; this resulted in the aforementioned Islamist group’s retreat towards the village of Marj Al-Sultan, which is situated just north of the base.

Following the capture of the Helicopter Airbase, the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade entered the village of Marj Al-Sultan, where they were confronted by a large contingent of Jaysh Al-Islam fighters at the southern entrance – they would later conceded the southern entrance to the pro-government forces.

With the Syrian Armed Forces in full control of the Helicopter Airbase and half of the Marj Al-Sultan village, the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam have been forced to reinforce their northern flank in anticipation for a final assault by the Republican Guard.

Adding to their plight in Marj Al-Sultan, Jaysh Al-Islam’s lead commander in the region, “Abu ‘Abdullah Al-Shami”, was captured by the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – he was attempting to evade the Syrian Armed Forces at the southern flank of the village, but was taken prisoner before he could escape.

Despite claims of the Syrian Army taking full control of Marj Al-Sultan village and the northern Helicopter Base; this was dismissed by sources close to Al-Masdar News – fighting ongoing.

Chinese-made weapons have become the best-seller in Africa

user posted image

QUOTE
In fact, Chinese-made weapons are becoming increasingly popular in the African market in recent years, and as the fourth-largest arms exporter in the world, China has already replaced Russia and Ukraine as the largest supplier of weapons for Sub-Saharan African countries (not including South Africa), with its annual sales hitting nearly US$1 billion last year.

China is currently exporting all sorts of weapons, ranging from assault rifles to tanks and jet fighters, to a total of 18 African countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Tanzania, Algeria, Chad, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Namibia, Angola, Congo, etc. Among them, Nigeria is the biggest single buyer, accounting for 35 percent of the total imports.
QUOTE
In 2010, Nigeria imported 15 F-7NI interceptors from China (the Chinese upgraded version of the MIG-21) for US$250 million to serve as the backbone of its air force.

Two years later, Nigeria ordered two stealth frigates each with a displacement of 8,000 tons and armed with a 76mm gun from China, both of which have already entered service with the Nigerian navy earlier this year.

These two ships are by far the biggest and most advanced naval combat vessels ever to come into service in a West African country.

According to unconfirmed sources from the Pakistani military, the Nigerian air force is seriously considering buying up to 40 JF-17 jet fighters, a multi-role, third-generation combat aircraft jointly developed by China and Pakistan.

Apart from Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania are two other major buyers of Chinese weapons, which have almost dominated their arsenals.

Sudan’s major armed forces equipment are predominantly Chinese-made, including the F-7 jet fighter, the Q-5 ground support aircraft (the Chinese improved version of the MIG-19), the K-8 two-seat jet trainer, the Y-8 military transport aircraft (Chinese version of the former Soviet An-12) and the Type 96 main battle tank.

It is noteworthy that the Sudanian army acquired several sets of the Chinese-made WS-2 self-propelled multi-barrel rocket-launcher system in around 2010, with a maximum firing range of up to 400 kilometers, making Sudan the only country in the Sub-Saharan region with land-to-land long-range strike capabilities.

As for Tanzania, its military is equipped with a wide variety of Chinese-made weapons including jet fighters, tanks and armored personnel carriers.
QUOTE
Since the early ’90s, Egypt has purchased more than 70 F-7s from China, and since 1999 the K-8 jet trainers have been a part of the Egyptian air force. By far there are already around 120 K-8s in active service in Egypt, making it the largest overseas user of this particular model.

Developed back in the early ’90s as a two-seat, single-engine primary jet trainer specially designed for the PLA, the K-8 later turned out to be a highly successful and lucrative export product that helped open China’s door to the high-end weapons market in Africa.

It is estimated that Chinese products now corner 80 percent of the military jet trainer market in the Sub-Saharan region.

US Tests Plan for F-18 Jets to Carry Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles

user posted image

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Navy has commenced a series of tests to deploy Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM) on its F-18/A and F-18E/F Super-Hornet jets, defense contractor Lockheed Martin said in a news release on Monday.

"The LRASM airworthiness flights on the Super Hornet put us one step closer to fielding this urgently needed capability for our warfighters," Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control LRASM Director Mike Fleming stated in the release.

The flights were conducted at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Maryland, according to the release.
"The flight data acquired validates the LRASM system design and clears the way for the test program to continue," Fleming noted.

The LRASM is a precision-guided, anti-ship missile that allows carrier-launched aircraft to conduct precisions trikes against ships and other maritime targets from outside the range of their anti-aircraft defense systems.

Why Isn’t Israel Arming Iraq’s Kurds?

user posted image

QUOTE
In a predictable world, Israel and Iraqi Kurdistan would be the closest allies. However, the Middle East is not predictable, and the Israelis have refrained from sending weapons to help the Kurds’ war with the Islamic State.

What’s stopping them? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu believes that an independent Kurdistan would be a good thing since it would, he reasons, bolster an alliance of moderates across the volatile Middle East.
QUOTE
In August, the Financial Times revealed that 77 percent Israel’s oil supply originates from Iraq’s Kurdish region, which flows out to middlemen, and which Israel then buys from the international market. These deals are opaque, and neither government acknowledges the trade openly. Additionally, Israeli aid agencies have provided humanitarian support to displaced Christians and Yazidis in Iraqi Kurdistan.
QUOTE
In other words, the biggest obstacle to greater cooperation is the fact that Iraqi Kurdistan is an enclave surrounded by larger powers. In a region where Israel is widely hated, military support is far too risky.

Also risky? Iraqi Kurdistan openly confronting Baghdad. Turkey and Iran fear their own Kurdish minorities would opt to join their Iraqi cousins if they openly declared their independence. And if Israel began providing weapons? That would be some dangerous, destabilizing business.

ISIS extorts millions from captive residents in Syria and Iraq

user posted image

QUOTE
ISIS is extorting hundreds of millions of pounds from captive residents in Syria and Iraq using an army of tax collectors and informants to fund its so-called caliphate, an investigation has found.

People living in territory controlled by the extremists are forced to pay a religious tax, known as 'zakat', to fund salaries that attract recruits and pay for services such as street cleaning and bread subsidies.

An investigation found that the terror group now earns as much from taxation, extortion and confiscation as oil, which brought in a staggering £296million ($450m) during the past year.
