Chris Kyle would be so proud: American Sniper widow Taya beats champion NRA marksman with perfect score at charity sharpshooting competition

user posted image

QUOTE
The widow of Navy SEAL sharpshooter Chris Kyle likely would have made her late husband proud by winning the 'American Sniper Shootout' charity event that was named after him on Saturday.

Novice shooter Taya Kyle defeated reigning NRA champion Bruce Piatt and raised $500,000 for her husband's charity by notching a perfect score at the shootout competition in Mason, Texas.

But Kyle, who made 100 per cent of her shots for a total of 10,140 points, had a little bit of help...
QUOTE
The inexperienced markswoman used the computer-equipped M600 and M800 rifles with precision-guiding technology that were made by TrackingPoint to defeat Piatt, Fox News reported.

The rifles, which were developed with input from Kyle's husband, all feature 'RapidLok Target Acquisition' technology that automatically will acquire and track a target while the trigger is pulled.

The company was so confident she would defeat Piatt, who competed with the M4A1, M110, and M2010 military rifles, that they offered to pay him $1million if he was able to win the contest.

WHAT IS THE RUSSIA’S NATIONAL DEFENSE CONTROL CENTER? HOW IT WORKS?

Supercomputer

The structure of the Center is not known. The General Staff revealed few details, that of a control center of the strategic nuclear forces, command and control, and the Center for the Control Center of daily activities, the remaining divisions are classified as “Secret”.

The technical work of the center is done by a supercomputer, or rather several networked supercomputers located in various data centers around Russia. The machine analyses data from mass media and social networks, and is able to analyse data from 6 languages. The supercomputer is also used to simulate wars and combat operations.

The Defense Ministry reported that their ‘miracle of computing’ has far superior performance, and is well ahead of any overseas analogues, including those at the Pentagon.

The Domestic supercomputer system has a storage capacity of 236 petabytes, performance of the machine is 16 petaflops, and information processing speed – enough to process 50 Lenin Libraries in a second. For comparison, the volume of the US computer hard disk 12 petabytes, and its capacity is up to 5 petaflops.
QUOTE
Thanks to this Center, the number of steps in the process to issuing orders has dropped significantly. It means an increase in efficiency of management. Information is received from the media, from ships and aircraft carrying duty is far outside Russia – all in one place. This system allows you to make decisions instantly.” – Underscored Litovkin.

The establishment of the National Center for Defense was definitely the right decision by Vladimir Putin. Defense Ministry managed to solve the issue of creating a national supercomputer and automated command and control system. The process of creating the Center for Defense was launched in a relatively quiet time. But the current military-political situation has fully proved the need for such a structure.

This Massive Hangar Bay Is Where The USAF Gives Its Biggest Jet A Tune-Up

user posted image

QUOTE
This huge hangar bay is equipped with all the scaffolding and tools needed to partially disassemble a C-5 and put it back together in far better condition than when it arrived. According to the USAF:

“In an effort to maximize the lifespan of the C-5 fleet, the aircraft goes through a series of inspections that vary in recurrence and depth; pre-flight, home-station check, Maintenance Steering Group-3 Minor, MSG-3 Major and Programmed Depot Maintenance.

All C-5 aircraft in the inventory undergo an eight-year scheduled maintenance timeline through the MSG-3 process. The cycle for these inspections goes as such: Programmed Depot Maintenance, Minor ISO, Major ISO, Minor ISO then starting back at PDM. Each inspection is two years apart and continues for the lifecycle of the weapon system. Dover AFB has the only facility in the Air Force that is able to conduct Major ISO inspections.

The MSG-3 Major inspection takes approximately 55 days, depending on what services and repairs the aircraft needs. Maj. James Wall, 436th MXS commander, said at the 55-day rate, the ISO dock is able to turn out nine aircraft a year, which keeps the entire C-5 fleet on its eight year maintenance cycle.

During an ISO inspection, aircraft maintainers strip down the C-5 looking for any deficiencies, faults, cracks or any other problem in every system and of the aircraft.”

Revealed: Assad Buys Oil From ISIS

user posted image

QUOTE
We know ISIS has a discreet arrangement with a neighbor, but it’s not Turkey. The Syrian regime has done business with ISIS from day one, just as it did with al Qaeda’s Nusra Front and other rebels who took over energy assets early in the war. President Bashar al-Assad’s point man for ISIS deals, George Haswani, was first designated by the European Union in March. The U.S. Treasury went a step further with its designation on Nov. 25. In addition to the oil deals, Treasury fingered Haswani’s engineering and construction company (HESCO) for servicing active ISIS fields. Leading up to the most recent wave of airstrikes against ISIS oil targets, U.S. officials admitted the network was more resilient and resourceful than expected. Another Treasury designation in late September hinted that ISIS actually increased oil production this year. They may have had some help from Assad’s man.
QUOTE
We don’t know how much oil ISIS has delivered to Assad, but there’s no doubt he needs it. For the first half of 2015, the regime’s oil output was less than 10,000 barrels a day. That was before pro-Assad forces retreated from even more oil-rich territory. All those eyes in the sky over Syria can’t tell how much ISIS oil passes through pipelines to regime-held refineries in the west. There are, however, curious gaps in official data. In April, for instance, Syria’s oil ministry said it refined 106,000 barrels a day, yet trade press could only explain where 85,000 barrels of that oil came from. Data has been increasingly hard to come by since.
QUOTE
Besides oil, ISIS delivers natural gas to the regime. These deals are durable because ISIS can’t use it or sell it to anyone else: It must be captured at the source and moved by pipeline. The only users connected to the gas fields are power plants, refineries, and industries, which are concentrated in Assad’s strongholds. In exchange for gas, the regime provides utilities like electricity, which ISIS taxes accordingly. At natural gas fields like those around Palmyra, which produce lighter liquid hydrocarbons in addition to gas, ISIS takes whatever it can turn into fuel. The gas goes west to Assad.

What it’s like at the training school where US troops learn to survive in the Arctic

Each year, this five-day intensive training program, also known as Cool School, teaches over 700 servicemembers the survival skills necessary to fight back against nature and survive in the Arctic.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, DEC. 10, 2015

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah are pushing towards the Aleppo-Damascus highway in the Aleppo province’s southern countryside. The main clashes against the militants of Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki are continuing at the towns of Barqoum and Al-Zorba.

Separately, Al-Nusra and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham launched a counteroffensive and attempted to capture the town of Tal Al-‘Eiss. They failed to broke the the pro-government forces’ defenses. The inability to successfully counter-attack puts the militants in a hard situation in the Aleppo province. Advancing Al-Zorba, the Syrian forces are threatening to cutoff the militants’ primary supply line from the Idlib province to the provincial capital of the Aleppo city.

The SAA made heavy gains inside the city of Daraa leaving them in striking distance of the old Daraa border-crossing with Jordan which is commonly referred to as the Al-Jamrak Crossing. The loyalists imposed full control over the al-Manshiyah district and captured several buildings inside the Daraa al-Balad quarter.

Terrorists are controlling the both major border-crossings with Jordan: Nassib and Daraa. The recent SAA operations in Daraa are aimed to decrease the flow of weapons and manpower supplied to the militants from Jordan.

On Wednesday, ISIS launched a counter-offensive at the village of Maheen in order to recover several points lost to the pro-government forces over the last three weeks. ISIS started operation with capturing the Quraytayn-Maheen checkpoint and the corresponding hill that overlooks the Christian city of Quraytayn. Then, the ISIS forces would seize two more hilltops along the Maheen-Quraytayn road after clashes with the National Defense Forces and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. As a result of these gains, ISIS was able to reenter Maheen and retake the town.

The ISIS counter-offensive has become possible because the Syrian Arab Army’s 120th Brigade of the 2nd Division and the Assyrian “Gozarto Protection Forces” (GPF) had been moved from the Maheen-Quraytayn front to another area of the battleground.

Does Kim Jong-un have a HYDROGEN bomb?

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has proudly claimed that the secret state has developed a hydrogen bomb, a step up from the less powerful atomic bomb.

Experts remain skeptical about the dictator's extraordinary claims, questioning whether the backward state of North Korea has the capability and finance to produce such a deadly device. The White House later said it doubted the claims.

Syrian Army Inches Closer to the Most Important Turkish Border-Crossing

user posted image

Two days ago, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) managed to impose full control over the village of Ateiri in the Lattakian countryside whilst also advancing some 4 kilometers along the Turkish border during the past few weeks.

However, local army commanders have now set their eyes on Rabi’ah which has long been a Free Syrian Army (FSA) regional capital in Lattakia, sidelined only by the Jabhat al-Nusra stronghold of Salma. Rabi’ah is geograpchically situated less than 1 kilometer South of Ateiri. A source close to al-Masdar in Lattakia city reported that Russian jets could be heard flying above the provincial capital as of tonight.

The rebel frontline in the Lattakian governorate has largely crumbled as the SAA, National Defence Forces (NDF), Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) and Al Muqāwamat al-Sūriyah (Syrian Resistance) have captured more than a dozen villages from insurgents during the past month.

If the SAA and their allies were to capture Rabi’ah and Salma, rebels would be forced to abandon the Lattakian province and flee to Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib. Furthermore, this would have the government surround the Islamist Jaish al-Fateh coalition in the province of Idlib from 3 flanks.

Trump’s ‘Muslim Ban’ Would Betray Military Interpreters

user posted image

QUOTE
The Trump campaign doesn’t seem to care. During an appearance on CNN, Trump campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson dismissed these concerns, stating, “So what? They’re Muslim.”

This policy would not just ban Syrian refugees. It would bar entry to Muslim interpreters whose work with the U.S. military has made them targets for terrorist groups. It would be a another betrayal for a group of men and women who have fought a long battle for recognition.

The United States relies on translators to help American soldiers communicate with local people in Iraq and Afghanistan, and could need similar help in Syria. Though some American soldiers speak the local languages, the majority of interpreters are civilians contracted to accompany troops onto battlefields.

The translator corps includes both American citizens and local nationals among its ranks. Local contractors also reflect the diversity of their countries. The United States has hired Christian and Yazidi interpreters, but the majority are Muslim.

Underestimating US in Asia a ‘Severe Miscalculation’: Senior Defense Official

user posted image

QUOTE
The recent U.S freedom of navigation operation (FONOP) in the South China Sea, Denmark said, was a good example of how U.S. resolve could be used to ensure China’s adherence to international law. Despite criticism about the FONOP’s mixed signals, Denmark said it successfully demonstrated that there was “one global standard” for freedom of navigation, even on China’s periphery. It also proved the “real world application” of recent confidence-building measures between the two militaries, since the PLA Navy had utilized a defense telephone link to the U.S. chief of naval operations following the FONOP.

“China is more likely to play a constructive role regionally and globally when the United States, our allies and partners demonstrate our resolve to uphold the principled international order. The operation conducted by the USS Lassen in the South China Sea last month should be viewed through this lens,” he said.

Houthi prisoners sold to IS for 'Hollywood-style' execution

Houthi prisoners were sold to the Islamic State group by Yemeni tribes to be executed for propaganda value, Yemeni sources have claimed.

“The Yemeni branch of IS paid to buy the Houthi prisoners, and then executed them in a Hollywood-style video,” anonymous Yemeni security sources told the Arabi21 website on Wednesday.

India Set to Kill a Drone Program Because All of Them Crashed

user posted image

For a little more than 20 years, India has worked on developing an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program. The Nishant fleet built four of the drones to spy on Maoist rebels and other insurgents in the country. But now the military is closing the program because of a minor setback: they all crashed.

On November 17, the Economic Times in India reported that the fleet was already to be decommissioned since three out of four drones had crashed. Then on November 20, the last one crashed, according to Times of India. The decision had already been made to kill the fleet, but the last one just decided to drop out of the sky anyway. Maybe out of spite.

The Nishant is not the country's only drone. Their fleet includes a combination of imported and domestically built drones. But just prior to the third crash, the Army was prepared to order up eight more.

Israel warplanes figure out how to confuse Russia's 'unbeatable' air-defence system

user posted image

QUOTE
The sources said a Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system, sold to Cyprus 18 years ago but now located on the Greek island of Crete, had been activated during joint drills between the Greek and Israeli air forces in April-May this year.
QUOTE
The activation allowed Israel's warplanes to test how the S-300's lock-on system works, gathering data on its powerful tracking radar and how it might be blinded or bluffed.

In general, any system can be defeated this way or that

One defence source in the region said Greece had done so at the request of the United States, Israel's chief ally, on at least one occasion in the past year. It was unclear whether Israel had shared its findings with its allies.

"Part of the manoeuvres involved pitting Israeli jets against Greek anti-aircraft systems," one source said. Two other sources said the Crete S-300 was among the systems turned on.

The sources spoke to Reuters on condition they not be identified by name or nationality. The Greek and Israeli militaries declined to confirm or deny any use of the S-300 system during drills held in the Eastern Mediterranean last April-May or similar exercises in 2012 and 2010.

The section will now sail 1,335 miles around the south of England and up to the east of Scotland on a barge to reach Rosyth.

ISIS can print authentic Syrian passports, may infiltrate US

user posted image

QUOTE
Islamic State has at least one specialized printing machine used to print authentic Syrian passports and plenty of blanks, US law enforcement agencies warned. Fraudulent passports would help terrorist infiltrators pose as refugees from Syria.
The concern that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) can print authentic-looking passports was made public by FBI Director James Comey, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

“The intelligence community is concerned that they [IS] have the ability, the capability to manufacture fraudulent passports, which is a concern in any setting,” Comey told the legislators.

The threat was highlighted last week in a 17-page security bulletin sent by the Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) to law enforcement, which said IS procured at least one passport printing machine during a raid on the city of Deir ez-Zour last summer, reported ABC News, which obtained the document.

Pentagon to change U.S. military personnel 'dog tags' for first time in 40 years

user posted image

QUOTE
ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- For the first time since the 1970s, the U.S. Department of Defense is implementing a change to the iconic aluminum identification tags worn around the necks of American servicemen and women.

The change is minor, but impactful. The only thing that will change about the "dog tags" is that they will no longer include servicemen and women's Social Security numbers -- an effort to mitigate identity theft.

"Identity theft is a very real threat for us right now, and so many people are not aware that our information is easily accessed," Staff Sgt. Kristen Duus said. "By removing socials from ID tags, one more step is being taken to protect ourselves and our identities."

The Social Security numbers will be replaced by a randomly-generated 10-digit Department of Defense identification number.

The Chinese Submarine Threat

user posted image

QUOTE
According to the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence, China’s attack submarine fleet consists mainly of diesel-electric boats (SSKs) – there are 57 of them, as well as five nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). Of these, the more modern ones include two Shang SSNs, 12 Kilo SSKs, and 12 Yuan SSKs.
QUOTE
There have been numerous instances of American carrier groups being surprised by SSKs, friendly or otherwise, during either training exercises or regular deployments. The most famous is arguably the 2006 incident of a Song surfacing at a distance within firing range of the Kitty Hawk battle group.
QUOTE
And in a similar case in October this year, a Chinese boat reportedly “stalked” the Reagan carrier strike group (CSG), setting off alarm bells amongst U.S. defense officials. So the question is to what extent would PLAN submarines threaten U.S. carriers during a conflict?
QUOTE
The Chinese submarine force, while numerically large, would have an uphill task trying to find U.S. flattops as the real estate to be covered is vast – the Philippine Sea alone is some 5 million square kilometers in area.
QUOTE
And if a Chinese diesel boat were to locate a U.S. carrier without cueing, the former would find it difficult to continuously track the American vessel’s movement unless the sub’s position relative to the carrier is optimal at first contact.
QUOTE
Only the PLAN’s Shangs, with a top speed of some 30 knots, are capable of matching the CSG. The other Chinese SSN in service, the noisy Han, can only make up to 25 knots.
QUOTE
To compound matters, PLAN boats lack towed-array sonar that would enable them to detect targets from a much greater distance compared to hull sonar.
QUOTE
At this juncture, it is appropriate to establish the terms “mission kill” and “platform kill.” Simply put, platform kill occurs when the ship attacked is sunk, while a mission kills involves the ship being unable to perform its primary task(s).
QUOTE
Indeed, Howarth contends in China’s Rising Sea Power (p. 99.) that “(l)arge armored warships are inherently difficult to sink or disable with hits above the waterline, unless the missiles manage to penetrate a vital area of the ship such as its magazine or combat information center.”

Tiger Forces Eye the ISIS Stronghold of Deir Hafer in East Aleppo

user posted image

Last week, the Syrian Arab Army’s elite special operations division that is known as the “Tiger Forces” had surprised the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) by capturing three strategic sites near the Kuweries Military Airport, which further added to their overall progress in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside.

The Tiger Forces – in coordination with Hezbollah, Harakat Al-Nujaba, and the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Al-Salamiyah and Aleppo City – seized the villages of Shuwaylekh and Nasrallah, along with the imperative Rasm Al-‘Abid Production Facility; this ultimately paved the way for the pro-government forces to advance to Humaymah Al-Kabeera and Tal Al-‘Abyad.

This week, the Tiger Forces and their allies have intensified their assault on eastern Aleppo, striking ISIS at several villages near the Kuweires Military Airport, including Tal Al-Ahmar and Humaymah Al-Kabeera.

On Thursday morning, the Tiger Forces and their allies were able to break-through ISIS’ frontline defenses at the farms situated to the south of the Rasm Al-‘Abid Production Facility, resulting in the pro-government forces finally reaching the small hills that border Tal Al-Ahmar.

Should the Syrian Armed Forces capture Tal Al-Ahmar and Humaymah Al-Kabeera, they will have effectively built a large buffer-zone around the Kuweries Military Airport, while also advancing their positions around the ISIS stronghold of Deir Hafer.
