Learning from songs is a good way to improve and expand your repertoire, allows you to improvise and innovate from other players' ideas and style.
I used to have a friend oso think that way
he said why u play a song and u dun understand what it really plays there
haha to me, i dun set a rule too much for myself.. I try to make sure I am comfortable with it and at the same time I balance my musics theory and oso my practical.. So I learn both at the same time.. and sometimes I still go learn some songs and as time goes thru.. u will know what u r really playing....or what I do is I always seek for my mentor.. to ask what is it.. but at the same time I really find out all those theory stuffs .. so at times I guess myself.. and I verify it from my mentor and then he explains to me in detail
notice why u go for any lessons, Theory and Practical are both done together normally.. no use for u to know any theory and understand what ppl plays but can't even play..
and sometimes maybe u dun learn songs, u dun all those scales.. fingers exercises.. but then playing songs sometimes oso gain me more experience on how people apply those theories into their musics.. so I need this experience with me.. to improve my musics talents....
To me, it is always great to balance everything.. Remember, do feel comfortable in musics. Musics are meant to be enjoyed... right?
