Hey peepz,

I'm about to purchase my first mac computer, and it's going to be a portable one.
I'm eyeing on MacBook, reason being it is light and small.

My daily activities are 24/7 downloads, MSN, surfing, gaming (Warcraft3), school work (Microsoft Office) & movies and music.

I'm a Malaysian student planning to go over abroad to Melbourne for studies.

1. Should i wait till something comes out next? I have a feeling something new is coming out, How bout quad core?
2. Should i get it at Malaysia or Melbourne? I worry about warranty issues.
3. Should i get 1.8Ghz and upgrade memory, or just get the 2.0Ghz (white version)

That's all for now

I've been told that students receive discount on buying apple computers in australia. But don't take my word for it though

hiya... been live in australia for almost 9 yrs, trust me, definitely buy it in malaysia, way cheaper than aus... yes, you do get student discount but the unfavourable exchange rate makes everything more expensive in aus (well, almost everything la)

well, if you happen to go to HK, buy it there... its cheaper... just got mine c2d macbook... abt 600 ringgit cheaper...

well, good luck with your mac purchase... i am sure it will be a pleasant experience no matter where you get it from... smile.gif

Sorry to break it out conholio but it is definitely cheaper to buy Mac products here in Aus as a student (iPod excluded because student discount is not offered anymore for this) compared to buying one in Malaysia. Cheers.

I think it's better to get the 2ghz default build because you get a bigger hdd, 2x the ram, the superdrive and of course a faster processor. Don't wait for the quad core, it's gonna be real expensive.

I don't think it will be expensive or what. It's just like dualcore and now macbook change to Core2duo. Is it expensive? NO rolleyes.gif Same price.

Right now, i sure there will be next generation macbook cos' of intel will release its next generation centrino, codenamed "Santa Rosa". It's still using Core2duo, but got higher FSB, IINM, it should be 800+FSB and the new integrated graphics(X3000) which support HDR and SM3, it can play most recent 3D games. I predict that macbook will be equip those *goodies* in the upcoming model thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Seriously, i don't think quadcore will be in lappie unless someone can design a better battery to extend to usage. Quadcore need lotz of power.

Just a little caution on the Apple warranty. Please note NOT ALL Apple products have International Warranty. However, Ipods, MacBooks and MacBook Pros are pretty ok to get anywhere cause that warrants the International Warranty coverage.

PS: Primarily, International Warranty applies to most of the portable products. Displays, iMac, etc aren't considered portable, mind you.

Nekoracing, I'm in sort of a similar situation with you... heheh..

If all goes well (read: foundation results tongue.gif ) ,I'm gonna start studying in Aussie February next year... I'm contemplating between a macbook or macbook pro... The thing is, I like the small size of the macbook, but it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card... Whatever it is, I'm gonna wait until leopard is released before i buy anything... I don't actually need the notebook immediately.... By that time vista would also be out and tested in the market.. I still need windows for certain applications, so if the MB is capable of running it, most probably I'll just get a MB with 2gb memory...

The only thing stopping me from choosing the MBP is the size.... Currently i'm using a 15.4" Acer and I don't think its portable enough to bring back and forth to classes...Even though the probability of Apple coming up with a 13inch or smaller macbook pro is slim, I'm still clinging on to the hopes that they will do so, as indicated by this recent rumour... heheh...

As for the warranty issues, you don't need to worry bcoz Apple products are covered by worlwide warranty... It would be advisable to add in Applecare so your notebook would be covered throughout your period of studies.... For the prices, I've been doing some comparisons and the price difference isn't really that much if you get the education discount in Australia:

Exchange rates change daily, so the prices will differ... I don't mind buying it where, but I'm waiting for leopard (and hopefully the smaller sized MBP).. If it is released before i depart for oz, then i'll buy it here... If not, I'll just buy it there...

The timing all depends on when you actually need the laptop... If you need it now, buy it now... You might also wanna check out the Mac Buyer's Guide..

Hope this helps... smile.gif

edit: oops... waiting for leopard.. mixed up already.. hahah.. thanks tinkerbel for the heads up... smile.gif

The to-be-released OS is Panther or Leopard? Well, I'm contemplating too if i should wait.. but if wait, need to wait how long wor?!

Besides, up to now no one's been able to confirm or give an estimated time when the new OS will be launched. Hmmm, now does anyone know Steve Jobs?! rolleyes.gif

That's what every1 is worrying about. Better wait for Stevie Jobs to announce in Jan '07. Will save you at least rm 300.
