Hi!Anyone know whats the salary for teaching piano in music centres ?? Also,is the salary enough to make a living ?

more than enough. subject that you can fill your whole schedule full with students, retain them.

By more than enough as in how much would that be ??

the higher the grade, the higher the fees. the split between the teacher and the center depends on the teacher's ability to recruit students and retain them especially those of a higher grade.

i would say theyre in the middle to mid-high level income group.
Don't expect to be able to buy your ferrari and a luxurious lifestyle.

It is not the music centre that will recruit the students ??




Well if its that type of income is fine by me.Im juz hoping there's enough to support myself and hav a decent lifestyle.

decent lifestyle is subjective. even professionals like engineers, accountants, lawyers are struggling in this economy.

There might be some walk in students into the centers, but dont rely on that.

of coz officially the students will have to register with the centre.

but the teacher can also promotes and lure students as well.

if u are recruiting students, better u do freelance provided u have the equipment or means.
say if you get 20 students each pay rm100 / month, half of what they pay go to the music center, so u only end up with rm1000.
so if u are good at recruiting, better u do freelance and take 100% of everything.

imo if the music center has problems attracting students, then its time to find a new center

Besides from the commision,is there a deduction for royalty fee too ??

i have no idea what royalty fee u are talking about.
i think better u just take the first step and just teach, then worry about the money later.

I used to teach at Yamaha, yes they charged royalty fees & admin fees.

During my time, beginner fees was RM120, deduct RM20 of admin fees and royalty. I was left with RM100. Then split according to percentage agreed. I got something higher than 50% cos i'm a diploma holder in piano performance.

If you are working for a music centre that have the capacity of students it will be fine. Otherwise, like many of my friends' experience, it's not quite a 'decent' job. Are you willing to teach if there is only 1 student available?

I can say it's pretty tough working as a freelance music tutor, but everything has its pro and cons, being in this line is not easy

I never knew that Yamaha splits the percentage because i see some teachers (not only piano) busy playing with the phone while the student is practising.

The percentage, so i guess if it's a Masters holder, it should be like 70-80%?

It depends on teachers, I never used my phone when teaching, even when my phone rings or what, it's just not good
But to be honest Yamaha is quite stingy, and the percentage really depends on the boss
70% - could be possible for masters holder? but 80% is really rare...

but if u have a masters, would u really want to waste time teaching in yamaha?

Well, i know some who does because they want to flexibility to juggle between their young kids and teaching music classes.

True that! Thats what I thought too
But somehow, he/she can work as full time, which has a basic salary plus the commission from teaching
It's still a stable job compared to us working as freelance tutor
