Sense8 cancelled after 2 seasons

On Wednesday, Netflix company founder and CEO Reed Hastings spoke publicly about wanting his company to “take more risk” and “try more crazy things” when it comes to programming—even if that means the company will have “a higher cancel rate.” And on Thursday, Netflix cancelled Sense8, the sci-fi drama from the Wachowskis that seemed to embody Hastings’s ambitions.

In a statement announcing the cancellation, Netflix’s V.P. of original content Cindy Holland agreed that Sense8 had been “everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kickass and outright unforgettable.” It’s a nice sentiment, but a confusing one to express while announcing that the ambitious series—which spanned two seasons, 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries—would be coming to a close.

“Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world,” Holland continued in a statement that raises the question, “Well then why are you canceling it?!”

It could be that the Wachowskis simply did not want to make more episodes. Or that the admittedly ambitious series was too expensive to produce. But given that Netflix famously does not release viewership data, it is hard to know what the exact reason for cancellation is. (On Wednesday, Hastings would only say that the decision comes down to both audience numbers and subscription growth.)

The Wachowskis said that the intention of their series was to explore the kind of heavy themes—like sexuality, gender, politics, and religion—that most television shows, let alone sci-fi shows, have ignored. J. Michael Straczynski, who co-created the series with the Wachowskis told fans that the venture, at least after its first season, had been embraced by viewers—with Netflix reps telling him viewers tended to watch the 12-episode first season “straight through—three, four, six times.”

Fans of the series have noted that the timing of the cancellation of the series—which has been called “The Best LGBT TV Show,” thanks to its beautifully-written characters including a transgender woman (Jamie Clayton) and a gay actor (Miguel Ángel Silvestre)—seems especially cruel considering that June 1 is the first day of Pride month.

https://twitter.com/Gxd_Dxmn/status/870362721623187457

Perhaps what seems even more jarring, however, is that Netflix is pulling the plug on a show whose very premise—about eight characters around the globe who are psychically linked—centers on building love and acceptance despite disparate backgrounds. It is a message that audiences might have a hard time finding elsewhere in the current political climate.

wtf is netflix thinking? doh.gif i get that the show is freaking expensive to make, but they could always do a better job in marketing now that the show's fanbase is ever growing

acexii Dirk Gently season 2 mutdafuckaaaas !  rclxm9.gif

So begins the Season 2 trailer for BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Agency, which more deeply explores the fantasy genre.

The logline: The vast dangers lurking in the fantasy realm navigate a path to Earth, becoming a threat in reality, and it’s up to Dirk (Samuel Barnett) and the gang to stop them in their tracks. But first – they need to find each other… Everything and everyone continues to be connected… from the sterile chambers of the government organization Blackwing, to the sleepy town of Bergsberg and the magical land of Wendimoor. After a few misfires, Dirk Gently steadily finds his footing on the new case to “find The Boy”, and with the help of his friends, makes the necessary connections to solve the mystery before it’s too late.

From creator Max Landis and showrunner Robert Cooper, the series is adapted from the popular novels by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Doctor Who).

Elijah Wood (Todd), Jade Eshete (Farah), Hannah Marks (Amanda), Mpho Koaho (Ken), Fiona Dourif (Bart), Dustin Milligan (Friedkin), Michael Eklund (Martin – Rowdy 3), Osric Chau (Vogel – Rowdy 3), Viv Leacock (Gripps – Rowdy 3), and Zak Santiago (Cross – Rowdy 3) are all set to return.

John Hannah (The Mage), Amanda Walsh (Suzie Boreton), Tyler Labine (Sherlock Hobbs), Izzie Steele (Deputy Tina Tevetino), Aleks Paunovic (Wygar Oak), and Alan Tudyk (Mr. Priest) join the cast for season two.

Labine and Tudyk talked about their new Season 2 characters during July’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Labine said his character Hobbs is a guy who looks to hang with Dirk’s team. “He’s the highly unchallenged sheriff of Burgs, and wants to be like them and enable them in all the wrong ways.”

“I play a bad man who is after and attacking the anomalous,” added Tudyk. “I have a big gun and I shoot it.”

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency premieres Saturday, October 14, 9/8c on BBC America in the U.S. and will stream globally on Netflix in countries outside the U.S. Season one is available on Hulu.

Check out the trailer above.

The first season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is fukken funny, awesome mindfcuked twist thumbup.gif

last time i checked 'tv show' and 'tv series' can be used interchangeably for content aired on TV before.
*
but u must know that ppl in general refers 'tv shows' as sth like reality shows e.g x-factor, the voice, the bachelor, so u think u can dance, raja lawak, AF, etc

whereas 'tv series' are more like movies or parts of a longer movie, sort of..

although if u google it, series and show are basically the same thing lol

Runaways gooding weyyy, MCU did it again thumbsup.gif
I was afraid the show's gonna flop since The Inhumans kayu series, but thank god it didn't
Comicbook.com review:
QUOTE
Reviewing the first two episodes of the series, Joseph Schmidt of ComicBook.com praised the show for its faithfulness to the comics, but also for some of the changes it made, appreciating the increased focus on the parents. He thought the cast portraying the Runaways was "pretty spot on", but "many of the parents are scene stealers"

Been watching The Orville. I must say this show is a legit scifi romp and I love it!!

The humor doesn't work most of time, but I was really impressed with everything else.
Seriously reminds me of Stargate Atlantis with the music and its main villain.

Anybody watching The Good Place?
Although a network TV sitcom series (NBC), only 13 <half-hour episodes.
Currently Season 1 is showing on Netflix, but no Season 2 yet on the streaming service becoz maybe season finale just finished airing on NBC (early Feb 2018).

Created by Michael Schur, co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation, executive producer for Master of None (no wonder saw Alan Yang's name).  Pilot episode was directed by Drew Goddard.  Starring Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, etc.

Although touted as a philosophical sitcom (maybe I misread the online reviews), it isn't preachy and doesn't really touch on all philosophy topics such as metaphysics (maybe in future seasons, not sure) ... mostly on morality and ethics (due to the storyline, not just for the sake of dispensing the teachings).  One of funniest comedy series in recent memory (my favs currently being Master of None, The Big Bang Theory, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, ... not draggy (hence the short 13 episodes only for Season 1, can binge-watch in one day).  Good show!
