Hi Apple fans. I'm planning to get an iMac soon. The 20 inch Core 2 Duo priced at Rm5999.
Thing is, I would like to upgrade the hard disk from 250GB to 500GB, and double the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. I was told by the Apple Store that I have to wait 3-7 weeks for it to arrive. I suspect that all they are doing is order online and sell to me even higher!
So, can I order online myself? Can Apple US or somewhere nearby ship to Malaysia?

Haha, that is one very well put together line It's expensive to get any Apple product here in Malaysia. A 30% tax apply on all items. Apple Store US does not ship to Malaysia. I think you'll just have to wait till the PC Fair or maybe buy your iMac in Hong Kong. (but i don't think you would want to transport that...)

While a tax is levied on iPods there is NO TAX on computers and computer equipment. Apple Malaysia however have been quite competitive with Mac pricing. It's a little higher than Singapore/US but not by much. Some states in the US charge tax which makes buying in the USA sometimes MORE expensive than Malaysia, so what you see online may not be really what you'd pay.

just to make it clear. MacAsia doesn't buy online as a customer and re-sell the unit to end-users.
if you place a CTO order, we'll actually order one Mac specifically for you. That's why we don't allow cancellations of CTO units.

Getting Started

You can order a base model, save up serious cash$$ and do these upgrades yourself since Apple Malaysia seems to sprinkle gold dust in their RAM (they cost a bloody arm!)
HD & RAM -- you can upgrade or extend your HD space by using an external drive. Get the specified RAM online (www.ramjet.com), or if you want to get the RAM locally, read the specs carefully (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/faq_cd/imac-intel-how-to-upgrade-memory.html) and buy top brands only.
You could potentially save RM$(add a number here), which I think is capable of buying a bloody arm. Or a nice iPod.
Remember to troll the forums for any hints of an updated iMac (probably mid next year??).
Next --Ask around for a reputable M'sian Mac vendor for competitive pricing, OR wait for PC Fair the trois this 1-3 Dec to look out for discounts which MAY include the upgrades you wanted.
Good luck and enjoy your tool!

Just a question though.. how come the 1.83Ghz Macbook sells for HK$ 8600 (approx RM 4020) in Hong Kong while the same model sells for RM4299 here back in Malaysia?

Obviously the price can't be EXACTLY the same worldwide...
Some places are cheaper, some more expensive, some have better deals, some none at all. Buy where you can get the cheapest of course. Your warranty is international after all. However, be careful about buying at non-english speaking locations. The keyboard may be substantially different. Otherwise: go ahead and hand over your plastic.

Apple Malaysia did has some offer long ago. Like the promo for titanium powerbook first came out, you get ACPP & a laptop case for free. They also offered education discount before.
But that was very long time ago.

Was thinking about picking up an iPod Nano.. The Apple US site was offering $101 USD off on the purchase of a new MB or a new iMac.
