Russia, Iran, Syria Reportedly Set Up Joint Center in Baghdad to Fight ISIL

user posted image

QUOTE
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian, Syrian and Iranian military have set up a coordination center in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad to begin working with Iran-backed Shia militias fighting the Islamic State jihadist group, Fox News television channel reported, citing Western intelligence sources.

On Tuesday, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, said that Russia and Iran would enhance their coordination with the Syrian government on Tehran's plan for a political settlement of the ongoing Syrian civil war.

According to the channel, the coordination cell includes participation of low-level Russian generals. The Iraqi government may also be involved, the media said.

On Tuesday morning, a Chinese naval vessel reportedly traveled through Egypt’s Suez Canal to enter the Mediterranean Sea; its destination was not confirmed.

However, according to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) that is stationed inside the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, Chinese military personnel and aerial assets are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks (6 weeks) to the port-city of Tartus – he could not provide anymore detail.

This comes two years after China warned that turmoil in Syria could have negative implications for the global economy and 18 months after Beijing, along with Moscow, used their security council vetoes to undercut a UN resolution calling for the crisis in Syria to be referred to the Hague.

Researchers from ThreatConnect and Defense Group Inc. (DGI) today published a report detailing their findings that China's People's Liberation Army Unit 78020 is the body behind the infamous Naikon advanced persistent threat group known for attacking military, diplomatic, and economic targets in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the UN Development Programme, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The five-year hacking campaign has targeted key individuals in those regions and organizations, all in the name of stealing information in its efforts to gain control of the strategic South China Sea. China is trying to reclaim islands in the oil-rich and highly strategic South China Sea.

Missiles and question marks: Some 'made in China' weaponry isn't all it's cracked up to be- Nikkei Asian Review

user posted image

QUOTE
BEIJING -- The massive military parade in Beijing earlier this month featured an array of fearsome weaponry, from ballistic missiles to fighter jets. China claims that all the combat hardware on display was developed and built domestically. But the origins of much of the materiel are more complicated.

China's cavalcade, which commemorated the 70th anniversary of its victory over Japan in World War II, was meant to highlight the nation's technological strengths. To the trained eyes of experts, it also hinted at the soft underbelly of the Chinese armed forces.

Consider the fighter planes. The Shenyang J-11, or Jian-11, is allegedly a copy of Russia's Sukhoi Su-27. The J-15 carrier-based fighter is believed to be a clone of the Soviet-designed Su-33. The engines -- the most important component -- in China's jets are imports from Russia.

There are also indications that performance may not be up to snuff. A video showing the J-15 taking off from an aircraft carrier suggests it can only get airborne when not weighed down by missiles and other armaments. The engine power, it seems, is insufficient for takeoff from a carrier's short flight deck.

The parade was the first public appearance of China's new attack and reconnaissance drone, the Caihong 5, or CH-5. It bears a striking resemblance to the American MQ-9 Reaper -- the primary offensive unmanned aerial vehicle used by the U.S. Air Force. But the CH-5 is no match for the MQ-9: The Chinese drone can carry only 900kg of weapons, while the U.S. one can handle 1,749kg.

China also showed off its Kongjing 500, or KJ-500, an airborne early warning and control aircraft. U.S. military officials say it is unclear what, exactly, the plane can do.

What America Needs From Its Next Great Spy Plane

user posted image

QUOTE
For the TR-X, Lockheed plans to repackage a bunch of existing technology, including the GE F118 engine used in the current U-2, and a modular payload setup that allows the Air Force to adapt the plane based on the current mission profile. Lockheed compares it to an iPhone, with different apps based on what you need it for. Historically, military planes have been single-purpose, designed to do one thing really well.

That’s not cost effective anymore, so the TR-X is designed from the ground up for multiple missions, whether it’s looking for moving columns of tanks or taking infrared pictures of underground weapons facilities.

Lockheed imagines the TR-X is as a next-gen combination of today’s spy planes. It would be able to fly as high as the manned U-2, but with the time-on-station abilities of the unmanned Global Hawk. It would have more powerful engines than the Global Hawk too, for heavier and more power-hungry payloads like cameras and sensors.

“A future concept, a completely clean sheet of paper [versus improving existing products] is probably the most cost effective way to prosecute the ISR mission in the future,” says Winstead. “We are looking at no earlier than 10 years” for the TR-X to deploy. So, if we want to keep the US at the forefront of ISR, Lockheed says, we need to get moving now.

The TR-X could be designed to fly to around 70,000 feet—higher than the Global Hawk and similar to the U-2’s ceiling. That height makes it easier to hide from those on the ground and allows cameras to see much farther away.

This is especially important in peacetime, when you might not want to actually fly into enemy airspace. Instead, you can fly along a border at 70,000 feet and see much further inland than you would be able to at 50,000 feet. In wartime, the higher altitude allows a plane to provide imagery support to troops on the ground from a much further distance away. And you don’t need as many planes to cover a particular geographic area.

The plane can also be used as a communications platform, bouncing data from one location to another in a war zone, as an alternative to satellites or ground-based communication tech. That takes stress off DoD satellites, and allows for the quick addition of more bandwidth if needed—just launch more planes. Also, there’s a lot of concern about satellites being jammed or even destroyed in a shooting war (they are sort of vulnerable up there). A mobile comms platform like the TR-X would be much more difficult to neutralize.

One problem with the U-2, which can fly higher than the Global Hawk, is that it must be manned (though Lockheed is working on a retrofit kit that could make that plane unmanned as well). This means the human inside needs stuff like food and bathroom breaks. The Global Hawk doesn’t need any of that, but there are times when you want a pilot around to help provide better perspective or to respond more effectively to an emergency (like getting shot at, or losing power).

That’s why the TR-X will be optionally manned: You can put a pilot in there if you wish, or you can fly it remotely. That’s especially useful because the plane will be able to fly and be on station for as long as 24-hours.

AS the exploration of Viscount Melbourne, a 150-year-old British cargo vessel, that sank right under Luconia Shoals continues, amateur marine archaeologist Captain Hans Berekoven and his wife Roz as well as their team of marine researchers went on to make a bold move – re-establishing Malaysia’s sovereignty on the site by planting the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ there.

Upon planting the flag, Hans made an emotional statement that the move was important to warn China to back down.Read more: http://www.theborneopost.com/2015/09/08/marine-archaeologist-stamps-malaysias-mark-on-luconia-shoals/#ixzz3mfIS7wPn

Best is Yet to Come: Mighty Armata’s Engine Power to Be Increased

user posted image

Currently the (engine) has been created but the new invention is confidential. I can only say that the work on engine completion continues,” Siyenko said.

Russia's armed forces will have 2,300 tanks by 2025. The cost to mass produce the T-14 Armata will be 250 million rubles (3.7 million dollars).

Regarding the innovation of the Armata, the expert said that the main thing today is the protection of the crew, its survival and the possibility of gaining combat experience.

Today the technical means of automatic target tracking and identification greatly exceeds human capability.
According to him, Russian electronics mounted on combat vehicles demonstrate satisfactory reliability.

Earlier it was reported that Russia's cutting edge piece of military equipment would not remain static. Its designers said that the Armata could well become the world’s first unmanned tank.

“The militants, who had been keeping the city under control and destroying priceless ancient monuments for months, are being killed in the air raids of the Syrian Air Force. During the most recent attack, 40 terrorists were destroyed in the province of Homs,” Zvezda reporters say. It was also said that many militants of the Islamic State lay down their arms and surrender.

“On September 20, in the village of Kanaker (province of Damascus) more than 500 fighters of the Islamic State and so-called moderate opposition laid down their arms,” Syrian agency SANA reports, adding that there is a video of ISIS militants yelling to government troops. The militants were said to be mercenaries from Iran, Turkey and Sudan. They received weapons from Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Lebanon. There are also many US-made weapons and heavy equipment,  reporters say.

INDEPENDENT MEDIA | Chinese Military Experts and Troop Deployment to Syria : Joint Russian-Chinese Development

user posted image

The situation is heating up in Syria yet again. If reports coming from Almasdar News are accurate, another troop deployment will soon be about to take place – in addition to the 2,000 Russian troops who arrived earlier this week. This time, however, the troops are coming from China. Leith Fadel of Almasdar News (the Arab Source), reported that China has now decided to commit troops and military aircraft to Syria within the next six weeks. Although the reports have not been independently confirmed, the outlet cited a senior Syrian officer in the Syrian military for the claims regarding the Chinese plans. Fadel’s information has proven accurate many times in the past.

On Tuesday, September 22, 2015, early morning, a Chinese naval vessel reportedly traveled through Egypt’s Suez Canal to enter the Mediterranean Sea; its destination was not confirmed. However, according to a senior officer in the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) that is stationed inside the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, Chinese military personnel and aerial assets are scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks (6 weeks) to the port-city of Tartous – he could not provide anymore detail.

Also, Russia's Defence Ministry on Thursday said it will hold naval drills in the "east Mediterranean" in September and October, as the West frets over a military buildup by Moscow in Syria. The exercises include three warships from Russia's Black Sea Fleet, including the Saratov landing ship, the Moskva guided missile cruiser and the Smetlivy destroyer, the ministry said in a statement. The drills will involve "40 combat exercises, including rocket and artillery fire at sea and airborne targets," the statement said. The Moskva cruiser, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, left its base in Crimea on Thursday September 24, 2015 and is now heading to the exercises, the Ministry added separately.

Russia has made it abundantly clear that they are taking an active role in this conflict, but the news of the Chinese military to Syria provides more insight into their contingency. There is clearly a mutual threat shared between Syria and China with both countries under attack from Uyghur terrorists who are typically controlled by Turkish and Western intelligence. China’s growing Uyghur separatists movement in Xinjang, recent bombings in to Turkey’s Uyghur “Grey Wolves,” and Turkistan Islamic Party/Army of Conquest Turkish-backed terrorists at work in Syria assisting in the supplying Chinese Uyghur terrorists with fake passports and engaging in terrorist/military operations against the Syrian government, all represent a threat that exists both to the existence of the Assad government in Syria and the government in China.

Some military strategists may point to China’s non-interference principle as an impasse to action. However, China’s non-interference principle is more in reference to meddling in other countries’ domestics politics, such as US/western penchant for intervention and violating other countries’ sovereignty to overthrow autocratic regimes they dislike. Non-interference policy does not mean inaction when China’s security and interests are threatened.

Moreover, the Assad regime is currently still the legal and UN-recognized government of Syria, despite only holding 1/3 of its territory. If Assad asks and gives permission for Russia, China and other Shanghai CoSCO members to assist him militarily, that would be in accordance with international law. This differs from the current US-led anti-ISIS coalition airstrikes in Syria that is neither operating under a UN mandate nor permission from the sovereign government, although it enjoys implicit permission to some extent from the Assad regime to fight ISIS.

If Fadel’s report from Almasdar is accurate, then it is apparent that the Russia-China bloc is finally responding to the Islamic State menace which many claims to be a Western-backed terror threat that has blown out of proportion.
In the meantime, we have to wait and watch - whether US & NATO forces finally receiving some vital support or an unwanted resistance to their current ongoing Syrian Offensives in the form of Russian-Chinese joint deployments in Syria.

US-trained Syrian rebels gave equipment to al Qaeda-linked Nusra for safe passage: Military spokesman

user posted image

US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, was told of the equipment surrender around 1 pm (1700 GMT) on Friday. (Source: Reuters photo)

Syrian rebels trained by the United States gave some of their equipment to the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front in exchange for safe passage, a US military spokesman said on Friday, the latest blow to a troubled US effort to train local partners to fight Islamic State militants.

The rebels surrendered six pick-up trucks and some ammunition, or about one-quarter of their issued equipment, to a suspected Nusra intermediary on September 21-22 in exchange for safe passage, said Colonel Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for US Central Command, in a statement.

“If accurate, the report of NSF members providing equipment to al Nusra Front is very concerning and a violation of Syria train and equip program guidelines,” Ryder said, using an acronym for the rebels, called the New Syrian Forces.

US Central Command, which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, was told of the equipment surrender around 1 pm (1700 GMT) on Friday, Ryder said. Earlier on Friday, Ryder had said all weapons and equipment issued to the rebels remained under their control.

The news was the most recent sign of trouble in a fledgling military effort to train fighters to take on the Islamic State militant group in Syria, where a 4-1/2-year civil war has killed about 250,000 people and caused nearly half of Syria’s prewar population of 23 million to flee.

A top US general told Congress last week that only a handful of the rebels are still fighting in Syria, though US military officials said this week that dozens more have since joined them. US officials have told Reuters that a review is underway that could result in scaling back and reenvisioning the program.

Indonesia Raises Military Budget By $2.5 Billion To Fund Arms Purchases

Source : Our Bureau ~ Dated : Saturday, September 26, 2015 @ 12:42 PM

The Indonesian Commission I of the House of Representatives has approved the proposal to raise the military budget by US$2.5 billion to fund new arms purchases.

Indonesia recently okayed the purchase of Su-35 fighter aircraft from Russia as part of its military modernization.

"In principle, Commission I agrees to the proposal to increase the military budget by Rp37 trillion (2.5 billion)," Mahfudz Siddiq Chairman of the Commission I was quoted as saying by Antaranews.com today.

Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu has proposed the increase in budget to buy more military equipment and improve the welfare of the soldier. In the draft state budget, the defense ministry was given a budget of Rp95 trillion (US$6.4 billion) less than its original proposal of Rp105 trillion (US$7.1 billion). Further about Rp30 trillion (2 billion) of the proposed additional budget would be used to buy military equipment, Mahfud said. In 2015, the budget for the military is Rp102 trillion (US$6.9 billion). Ryamizard also proposed to set aside Rp450 billion (US$30.7 million) of the military to strengthen military bases in border areas such as on the island of Natuna. Strong Natuna base is important with potential conflicts in South China Sea, the retired four star general said.

Rail Phantom: Russia Developing Invisible 'Death Trains' With Nukes

user posted image

The Soviet Union decided to produce combat railway missile complexes (BZhRKs) with ballistic missiles in 1969 in response to the US' powerful system of nuclear-capable submarines.

The USSR operated 12 BZhRKs with three missile launchers each, and it was an efficient and intimidating solution. The vehicles travelled across the system of railroads on the country's vast territory and closely resembled ordinary cargo trains, bringing to naught the capabilities of satellite surveillance.

As it was impossible to precisely determine the place where they could fire a nuclear missile, they were dubbed as "death" or "phantom" trains.

In 2005, Russia decommissioned the trains. Ten years later Moscow has decided to embark on the idea again.

Russian military industry official Viktor Murakhovsky explained the advantages of the next-generation nuke trains:

"They will not need any specific big cars. They will completely coincide with the existing parameters of railcars and will therefore be completely hidden from a foe's reconnaissance and surveillance. Moreover, the system will enable launches virtually everywhere on the railway bed in contrast with the previous system that required special launch conditions."

The new project, codenamed "Barguzin," will carry six ICBMs RS-24 Yars (a land equivalent of the submarine-launched Bulava).
A Russian BZhRK's cars can resist an explosion of a nuclear warhead just several hundred meters away. Such a train can run for a month autonomously and pass up to 1,000 kilometers daily at the speed of nearly 100 kmph.
