if you remain at D and apply brakes, you wont cause as much wear and tear to your transmission as compared to going from D>N and N>D. (think of it this way, do you notice the slight jerk when going from P>D or N>D and vice versa? yeah, that's the whole transmission at work.. so you are constantly engaging/disengaging the transmission system)Sorry have very little experience driving AUTO
But naturally, your brake pads gets worn out faster than if you change to N and don't apply brakes at stops.
Which then comes down to this, where do you want to spend your money on? On worn out brake pads or on worn out transmission? For me, I rather spend money on new brake pads than taking the risk of having problematic transmission in the future.
