Streets of Seoul is relatively safe at night, after 11pm even.
It is much more safer than KL streets if you ask me.

Just keep an eye out for petty thiefs.

Yesterday when I was at e-Mart and I eye witnessed something very interesting. I sat at a bench fronting a toilet entrance. An elderly man pushing his paid and fully loaded shopping cart and placed the cart unattended beside the toilet entrance wall and walked into the toilet for 10 min. The old man actions reflects very clearly that he is very confident that no one will push his fully loaded shopping cart away even if it was out of sight for 10 min.

Would you dare to leave behind your shopping cart unattended outside the toilet in mid valley ? I wouldn't.
*
You can leave your phone on the table in star bucks and go to the bathroom (I forgot my phone once in a starbucks, came back like 3-4 hours later and the waiter kept it for me) and comeback after, your phone will still be there.
It's not just the part of security, it is that... well, Koreans understand one another like a distant family.

Not saying there are none who would be petty enough to take things like that though...

Usually these petty thiefs are like school kid dropouts, so sometimes gotta feel bad for them also..
Depending on how much they steal, if it's like just some food or a little bit of money, most Koreans would usually let it go.

do note that korean people are quite open minded.

hence you can lots of gays and lesbians on the street holding hands and being lovey dovey.

not being offensive, but what i am trying to say is, don't be surprised if they touch your hands, pull you to their stalls and asking you to buy their products.

i've seen many, especially guys, gently pulling a guys/girls hand to their stall, convincing to buy their stuff. some guys also tend to whisper reaaallly close to you when they wanna give you discount. i had a hard time figuring which is gay, and which is normal.

so girls, or guys, please don't scream or freak out when they do that. can just smile and politely reject.
*
Emmm... not, quite.. actually.
Relationships wise, Koreans aren't really that open minded. Especially towards foreigners.. being normal friends, they're more than welcome but being close.. not so easy.

Girls-holding-girls hands aren't lesbians... even if they hug each other and walk around on street. Not even surprising if they kissed each other infact.
For girls, it is very normal there because they treat each other like actual blood-related sisters when they're close friends. So.. don't get the wrong idea.

For guys though.. you' are mostly right. Yea there are quite a few of those gayish guys indeed.
This is from how guys wants to be like girls, indeed there are gays walking around the street so watch your back.. laugh.gif
So err.. walk away when a guy comes up to you and call you "oppa".

hmmm..but the Soju has a very warming effect..very nice if drink during winter or cold weathers. drool.gif

@stimix

be sure to look out for their rice wine+fruit juice alcohol..also very nice n cheap!!  drool.gif  drool.gif  drool.gif
*
Soju is best drunk when eating meat, beef especially.
High grade beef (hanoo) goes extremely well with it, do it once and you'll get addicted. biggrin.gif

BTW, a disclaimer about soju calling it their version of beer.. technically, not so correct.
Beer and Soju are different things, and Koreans do drink beer.
Beer in Korean is called Maekju. So, you can't rome around in Korea and if you want to drink beer, you can't expect them to bring beer for you when you call for soju instead.

Rice win is called maekgeoli btw.

It is possible to go to the DMZ without booking with tour agencies. Here is quite a detailed explanation how :

http://travelynns.wordpress.com/2010/09/12...d-for-50-years/

I think this way it would be much more cheaper. Especially if we are not visiting the JSA which can only be arranged through tour (and expensive!)
*
As of 2 days ago, you can't anymore.
Entering the DMZ now, permission or not... is deemed trespassing, you're in no man's land. And you'll be considered enemy by the South as well.

So don't try to screw around by trying to be smart, atleast for this period of time.

Hi All,

Greetings!
Just checking, is it safe to travel to Korea now? I might be flying there in mid Jan. Do i have to check with the embassy? Where do i check?
I'll be staying at friend's place, Hannam-dong, Yongsang-gu.
Is it easy to get around from my friend's place?
Was wondering roughly how much would be sufficient enough to secure me there? I'm thinking of RM2K. My stay is more than a week.
Btw, anyone here staying in Korea right now?
Feedbacks are much appreciated!
Many thanks!
*
Anything can happen in Korea right now.
No one has the right to say wherter it is safe or not, oppinion wise... I'll tell you right up, it still is relatively safe. But of course, anything can happen... so take that with a pinch of salt.

Yongsan-gu is in Seoul, transports are easily reachable. No worries.

Since you're living in your friend's place, you've got shelter covered I assume... that means you don't have to spend money on that.
But to be honest with you, RM2000 is not quite enough.. things are really starting to get a lil' expensive here in Seoul, bring up to RM3000 to be on the safe side.

Haha my hanguk seonsaengnim (teacher) went back to Seoul 2 weeks ago, and came back to Malaysia a week ago.
She said just one week, she spent like nearly RM7k there (with husband though) eventhough she live in her unni (sister)'s house.

Don't know what she spent on... laugh.gif

Hi SSjBen & Zstan,

Thanks for your response!
Normally i won't have 3meals a day.Lolx...So wat if i only have 1or2 meals a day + eating cheap?
I probably will be spending more on transportation since my fren is working, so most of the time i will be on my own.
N i'm someone who is terrible in direction, so hopefully i will do fine. >.< Does da local speaks Eng? If yes,dat wil be beneficial to me as i cud ask for direction.
Any flea market, bazaar dat worth for shopping? As i don't intend to spend much on shopping.
I have put da following onto my itinerary as of now, wondering how long journey from Yongsan-gu?

-Lotte World/Everland
-Namiseom island
-Namsan Tower
-Loveland
*
You should be able to get by just eating 2 meals a day for a entire week with about 70k-100k won or so. Probably less if you cut down here and there.
Transportation is relatively cheap, so you don't have to worry. Just reload up to 20k won in your T-money card and you're good to go for up to a week (or more if you prefer walking).

Get a map, that's all I can say about directions.
For the middle-aged men and women, they could maybe understand what you're saying in english, but most of em' can't speak to you in english as they aren't fluent in it.
The youngsters should understand very simple english though however, but not all... of course.
So I suggest you ask your friend to write out a few simple Korean phrase sentences for you before you move around.

The markets, bazaar and all those... you can read the previous few pages with very informative pictures from zstan and aeiou.

ok i know how already, read it for those that are really worried about the situation between north and south and still doubtful whether is it safe to travel to korea now.

As always, take it with a pich of salt.
That's all just positive thinking and talks by the government.

Anyways, like I said earlier... it is still relatively safe to travel to Korea really.

Hi all.

I'll be traveling to Seoul in Jan 19-23. I have a few questions:

1. How's the situation in Seoul these days after the incident with NK? Safe to travel right?
2. Winter clothing: What are the essential clothings I need for this? I have some light jackets for my previous travel but don't think can withstand Seoul cold weather? Any advise? Should I buy the jacket in Seoul or just buy it off here from Malaysia? Where to get cheap and awesome winter clothing in M'sia and Seoul?
3. Do they have a train pass for 4 days of travel?

rclxms.gif  icon_question.gif

1. It's safe, my seonsaengnim says the newspapers there are just blowing things out of propotion, it isn't THAT big of an issue yet.
2. Buy in Seoul.
3. Use T-Money. smile.gif

I reserved my comment about Insadong moe for westerners ad the price of souvenirs is more expensive than Namdaemun. nfact namdaemun having more souvenirs shops than insadong.

About the cosmesics, Lotsa them on every corners of MyeongDong. However after comparing the facial mask pricing..not much heaper than KL. In KL, Korean faial mask is ~ RM8/pc whereas in Myeondong those lusy band ~ 1000won & mor trendy brand like nature republic /Skin food ~ 3000won..

Emmm..
I don't wish to talk too much about it but..

Reporting from yongpyong ski resort, its snowing here.man I tell u skiing is not easy. Its so tiring and when u ski downwards its very hard to stop and u tend to bang into those ppl not moving. I feel that skiing its not that fun cos u just have to pay to rent the eqs and u don have to pay to enter the skiing place. Just walk in feel the ice then can walk out,no problem. Total I spend about 75000 won to rent the eqs. I think its not worth it. But still depends on the individual.
*
Does depend on the individual indeed.
It's not easy skiing I agree.

Actually I snaked in a couple of sledding from the top to the bottom, nearly got scolded... laugh.gif

Lotte World is never worth going... really.
Despite it being a theme park, it's actually more for a place for people to go and date, playing isn't the major part.

Everland is also really nothing that special.

For those planning itinery, I honestly sugges to just skip the theme parks.
If you really, really really wanna go.. Everland will do.

aiya 730 got fireworks? dint know i left at about 530 like that. but at night was really beautiful with the xmas decoration and it is so huge. T-express wasnt open,me and my friend was running everywhere trying to find t-express.
if u go to everland u will realize every staff there that incharge of each ride will surely have a smile in their face and wave their hand like what u see when someone won the miss universe.from what i heard from my tour guide,he said their mthly salary is about rm4k++ just operating the rides. but he say its not alot cos korea living cost is high, then somehow it wont be much left after all the groceries.
*
Yea, RM4k isn't alot in Korea... just barely enough to survive for a month.
That's why eating meat (any type, but high-grade) is mostly a luxary.

During the flight to Seoul, I was told by a Korean guy sitting next to me  that fresh graduates are getting a starting pay of 2 to 3 million won (RM6k to RM9K) per month. Is that so ?
*
Yeap, that's about right.
3 mil won is about just how much a young adult would need to live happy enough in Seoul, without too much issues for worrying about food atleast.
