Dear sifus, I need icon_question.gif

Firstly some background, my D5 pump has been making continuous grinding/whirring sound for a while now (few weeks). I initially thought its due to air in the pump so gave the PC a 'little' shake laugh.gif and sometimes the sound goes away, sometimes just quietens a bit. Last week it became louder than ever but the sound changed from continuously whirring to sounding like a washing machine (on then off then on again then off repeat). I noticed the pump also emits considerable vibration which also made additional noise (due to the pump attached to 140 rad which is not fixed to the chassis). Now, previously the pump did make some noise (though not as loud as this time) so I didnt bother to get help to check thinking it'll go away.. doh.gif ikr, im an idiot.

Now to the main issue, last weekend I was just browsing suddenly the pump sounded stretched (don’t know how to describe it haha) and I noticed the temp of my GPU and CPU climbing up rapidly 1-2deg every min on my keyboard HWinfo. When I look at the tubing, the flow of water seems to slow down (not sure since I dont have a physical flow indicator in my loop). Then the pump emitted one long whirr and just went silent… cry.gif

After that i quickly shutdown my PC and have not started it since, scared if it will aggravate the pump condition. Now my question is,
1) Is the pump dead?
2) if above is so, anything can be done to salvage the pump?

Any inputs much appreciated.

Perhaps (one of the) impeller blades broke off?
If so, the debris may also cause flow to be restricted - hence your observation.

Can the pump be disassembled? Can it be salvaged?

Update: I just turned on my PC last night but the pump doesnt make any noise with no coolant flow noticeable in the tubing and CPU temp increased rapidly to ~70deg in about 15 mins. Think its dead?

no coolant flow, rapid temperature gain = the pump not working properly. have u tried to ketuk ketuk and see if it works back?

are you a hardware guy? maybe you can try to disassemble to check for broken parts.

Haha the 'ketuk ketuk' idea havent crossed my mind. Let me try that this evening and see if it works.

as you mentioned that no sound + rapid temp increase, the pump might be dead. so ketuk ketuk to check and see whether it's half dead or not.

but it looks like u need a new pump soon.

Omg guys. Guess what… tried the 'ketuk ketuk' method, dislodged something and the pump started to make the washing machine sound again!! rclxm9.gif

I had little hope of it working when it went dead quiet I thought its electrical was fried. Guess should've followed the rule 'if it doesn't work, shake harder' eh? biggrin.gif

Thanks to you guys I haven't order a new pump yet. notworthy.gif

Now time to take my system apart and see if I can get it fixed…

Thanks again for the advice guys! thumbup.gif

hmmm. this sounds like my initial condition. mine makes a high pitch whirring sounds, and knocking on it might make the sound go away for some time then it returns.

i fixed mine by washing it cleanly, maybe some debris was lodged inside. you can take it the pump apart from the pump top, it will looks like this http://i.imgur.com/X3Zf5ua.jpg. the middle black color thing is the propeller which is held to the main body with magnetic force and you can easily pull it apart from the main body. once you pull it apart, you can see a stem with a ceramic tip. i washed the whole thing properly, making sure no water touches the PCB at the back and then reassembled everything.
