It has been proven that it can run on 12 years old AMD CPU on 256MB RAM.

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/ope...e-proof-1288287

So whatever heaviness you're experiencing might not be the Windows, but your own system.

1. Check the task manager what process is hogging what resources. It could be either memory, disk or CPU. Most of the time it is the indexing services reading your disks hogging the CPU and HDD bandwidth causing the slowness.
2. If you do upgrade, you might want to check all drivers and update them to Windows 10 version of the driver. Some driver does cause issues like Killer NIC causing memory leak without the Windows 10 driver.
3. If you do upgrade, you might want to do clean installation. Historically, Windows always have some sort of error when people do upgrade. Despite Windows 10 is the cleanest I've ever experience, a clean install might help your issue.

Yes, windows 10 is heavy, 10kg heavier. 😛

Jokes aside, I do feel the same after upgrading/clean install from windows 8.1.

My wife who was on windows 7 say windows 10 is faster.

Faster in booting. But I don't really mind a bit longer booting. But my Windows 10 click start menu also a bit lag.

Very high disk usage after upgraded from win8.1 to win10. Boot up time longer, always feel laggy, haven't tried any games.

Wrong. Power Saving mode will throttle your CPU and even switch to internal GPU (if you have both internal and external gpu).

hmm.gif I have a some sort AMD with 1GB SD ram, ATI 9250 AGP, haven't really have the time to test W10 on it, but previous attemp with insider build wasn't going so well as it seems to have some issue with graphic where the animations bog down the system. Well, see when I got time to play around with it.

...

Anyway, no "heavy" problem on my main machine (i5 Sandy Bridge) with SSD. 20 sec boot.
Nah, even my several years old W7 don't runs "heavy" on SSD anyway.
If you're still on traditional HDD, check for health status with Crystal Disk Info, see if your HDD acting up, bad sector, reading error, etc.

And yes I also recommend clean install at the end.
After upgrade, fetch your free key, format, re-install with ISO. Yea it's kinda annoying process but... wink.gif for the sake of a clean stable system.
I bet large majority of the problems people talked on the Internet usually comes from the "upgrade", either inherited problem or problems created after migration.

not really, i think it perform quite well compared to windows 8. mayb you can try reset or clean install to see if the issue still persist. Most important, make sure your driver is updated and compatible with windows 10.

I would imagine in your situation, it comes down to few things

1. Early driver version issue. Not to mention AMD/ATI nowadays is really famous with their slow driver update.
2. Early build issue. I've experienced this with my GTX680 on Win8 preview previously. It certainly could be coming from early driver bugs as well but never take early preview build as an indicator for final build because the whole system (OS and drivers themselves) are not mature enough.
3. Your system itself. SDRAM is pretty old... A lot older compared to first gen DDR (while DDR is technically an SDRAM, I'm assuming it is SDR SDRAM and not DDR). I would imagine the CPU your system running on is a lot less capable compared to the one that the author of the article use.

But again, we also need to admit that the PC in the article doesn't run with good performance as well at 256MB. While it booted up fine, it took 41sec to open file explorer. nod.gif nod.gif

I would really love to try Win10 on an old PC just for the sake of reviewing the experience, but I don't have a working old PC... laugh.gif

Did you turn on fast startup? (should be on by default, but your installation have screwed up something)

http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-fa...ndows-10-a.html

My 5 year old Alienware M11x-R2 taking ~30-45 seconds for boot up which is impressive considering it takes 2 minutes to boot up Win 7.

(also check your startup tab in your task manager and clean it up.. )

hmm don't like this Windows 10, just now do 1 download and watch some movie, it hangs! damn, well although startup and shutdown is fast, but getting use to the new stuffs are taking time.

think i'll downgrade back to windows 7, at least will be more efficient than just a faster startup and shutdown smile.gif

for those who facing lagging while using win10, seeing memory usage 3g instead of 8g installed ram.(5g reserve example) do this step

win key+R>type msconfig>click ok> select boot tab> advance options > unchecked maximum memory box> restart

done!

Heavy? Hmm ... I think it's lighter
Back then when I was using Windows 8.1, startup took about 3 minutes before my PC is fully usable without hangs loads and stuff.
It only takes around 1 and a half minute for my Windows 10. So it's faster ^^
It could be faster, because there's some period of the boot showing a black screen after the logon logo. I did some research and found that I'm not the only one who have this problem.
I knew it'll probably slow down my PC if I did an upgrade with ton of stuff in my PC. So, I did format and uninstalled bloatware before upgrading.
Up until now, it's running smoothly. But I still prefer Aeroglass theme ^^

But in term of file transferring, I feel it consume too much resource though

Well yeah but it's not about hardcore or not hehe first of all new laptops come with 64bit os. Secondly these days apps use ram to improve user experience.

However a better upgrade is to replace hdd with ssd as boot drive. There is a big dfference between the same machine that runs hdd and ssd as os drive.

*
Yeah..my laptop also comes with 64-bit W7 home premium when i bought it in 2010...but i change it to W7 ultimate, better to me & now just got into W10..hehe
But RAM is still not upgraded till now...huhu...

Is laptop with hdd can use ssd as the boot drive..? Does it just plug n play or need some adjustment to change hdd to ssd?
(sorry..,a little noob in this..huhu)

yes you can use ssd as boot drive in laptops. after w10 upgrade, you can just remove the hdd os partition and do a clean install of w10 on ssd.

for w10, always grab the latest version using media creation tool to do this, because if you used the older ones (like 10240 build), you will need to go through upgrade to 10586 build, then apply latest patches.

yes, those links are valid ms download pages. you can just grab one from microsoft techbench if you don't wanna use media creation tool, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techbench

for uefi-enabled computers, you can just format your usb stick with fat32 (preferable capacity is 8gb), and extract contents of the iso with 7zip or winrar directly into the usb stick to make a bootable usb installer for w10.

I don't know why but after I installed Windows 10 in my 9 month old laptop (Inspiron 7447), it refused to boot up after the 2nd day. I had to go back to my Win 8.1. Maybe after my current project is over, I'll give it another go.

Windows 10 actually faster then Windows 7 and slightly faster then Windows 8, but if you use normal HDD to install Windows as system drive sure will get slow on boot no matter Windows 7, 8 or 10, use SSD as system drive will no have such problem

Windows 10 running on my laptop. 2.16GHz 4GB RAM. I can feel it becomes slower than Win 8. I only do typing and surfing stuff.

This problem is not related to Windows 10. The reason is because your harddisk is getting old. The longer time you are running your harddisk, the slower Windows you are using by times. Its time to replace to new SSD.

run on windows 10 the best is 8GM, if windows getting slower, suspect are some system files corrupted or virus infection.
if harddisk getting old, you need to run scandisk or defra to check any bad sector.
If there is bad sector then you need to change new HDD

I had install Windows 10 in my home antique PC - Pentium D805 with 3 GB RAM, so far so good. I find it run better than Windows 7.

For testing purpose, I purposely reduce 1 GB and it is not run as better as it shall be. So IMO Windows 10 needs at least 3 GB RAM.

the more RAM the better, when I had 8GB it will use 5GB, when I added to 16GB it will use 7GB, all running the same applications of Vuze, iTunes, Edge, Outlook, FTP.

Windows 10 required SSD to let it run perfectly smooth.

My antique 11 years old PC load insanity fast after I switch to SSD.

I got atom powered laptop with 2GB RAM and the ram usage only around 1.1gb when idle with no program running. I feel it's better than win 7 or 8.
