The Chinese said the gate of the Chinese Hell will be opened on the first day of Chinese 7th Lunar month at early midnight every year. The suffering spirits from the Hell are able to return their homes to see their descendants and enjoy grand feasts. But they have only one month vacation and have to return the Hell on the last day of the 7th lunar month. Therefore, Chinese call 7th lunar month is the Ghost Month.

The major event of the Ghost Month is Chung-Yuan Festival,UpperYuanFestival, which is the 15th lunar day. On the night of 14th lunar day, floating Water Lanterns will be put down to the river. Chinese think the legendary hell is under the ocean. Water Lanterns light up a road to welcome ghosts and spirits to our world for a dinner feast. The 15th day of Ghost Month is also the birthday of the Hell Officer who has right to pardon ghosts. All the ghosts have his permission to leave the hell for the Chung-Yuan Festival. Therefore, Chinese will prepare lots of food to treat their ascendant's spirits and homeless ghosts. Some people call the Chung-Yuan Festival as the Ghost Festival



According to Taoism, Shan-Yuan UpperYuan (first period of the year) Festival is on the 15th lunar day of the fist lunar month, which is the Lantern Festival. Chung-Yuan MiddleYuan (middle period of the year) Festival is on the 15th lunar day of the 7th lunar month. Xia-Yaun LowerYuan (last period of the year) Festival. is on the 15th lunar day of the 10th lunar month.

The 7th lunar day of the 7th lunar month is the Chinese Valentine Day, which ends up a sad story. There are many inauspicious signs in the 7th lunar month. many Chinese don't want to get married in the Ghost month.



Chinese have some taboos during the Chinese Ghost Month.

oh, it's that time of the year again.

I am a devout Chinese folk religion practitioner, and can tell you that most of these taboos are bullshit.

i always wonder hell also got timezone, different timezone hell open at different month
