Below, you’ll find everything we know, including how randomised alien species will ensure that each new galaxy is mysterious, and why the commitment to an intelligent and subversive end-game could make this one of the smartest interpretations of 4X strategy ever made.
Those uncertain, think of this as a 4X with a bit of Paradox style mechanics, like war scores, better diplomacy... those that play EU4 will be familiar with it.
My Stellaris adventure begins with the Space Cats. I haven't played much of it, so I'm learning a bit more details as I'm playing through it.
If you have any questions about the game, you can ask me. I'll do my best to answer.
Hey, its frags.... face
Anyway, since its a 4x game, how is the early game strategy? Does it involves settler rush that usually plagues other 4x games?
Sometimes, the AI just love plopping their colony so far away from their empire and right next to your border and the next moment, the diplomacy rating -10 because your border infringes their territory

Yeah my face
That's a great question. Imagine EU4 where the continents were not colonised. Imagine having the demesne restriction to your expansion. All the mechanics you're familiar with a Paradox game is in Stellaris. Early game expansion is not as fast as other 4X games since there is a limit to the size of your empire. You need to split up your empire into different sectors and assign leaders to them... like vassals... to expand.
My current playthrough I dont even have the tech to build a colony ship... which might be a setback in other 4X games... but maybe not in Stellaris. I'm researching colony ship in this part of the video. You can't simply expand without thinking about delegating.
That's where the Paradox formula is brilliant in a 4X. As for plopping down a colony near your border, I think there might be a mechanic to stop colonies that are outside your zone. I'm not 100% sure about this yet as I'm still very early in the game. There might be massive penalties for colonising outside your zone. I'll have to play more to see. I don't have any documentation for the game at the moment. So I cant RTFM
I found EU4 to be a headache.. I'm really bad at it..
Yes. I would say so. There's some similarities, but fundamentally different games. Stellaris so far definitely seems to be newbie friendly. It's still a bit different from other 4X so familiarity with that genre will only help you a bit.

nice.. will definitely buy it when it's on sale someday
It’s very different from Sins of a Solar Empire. It’s not an RTS. It runs in real time but you pause and play more like a Paradox game. Battles are hands off affair, you can’t order ships to do specific things. Stellaris is what you call grand strategy. It is about the macro. You can form alliances and eventually a federation with other space faring species. And in a federation... which works like UN, you need to get support from all to declare war on another species. You can’t simply attack another alien civilization.
I really like it so far. Created my own empire that is focused on being pure science / engineering and military based. Learnt most of the basic mechanics within the hour. Only put in about 2-3 hours so far and am loving it. I've read on some reviews which mentions the sluggishness of the mid to late game stage. I'll decide for myself when I get there.
I've put in some time into the game and I personally feel that even though it is less confusing than Europa Universalis, it's still rather overwhelming.
this would be my first of paradox 4x game, havent played any of their 4x titles previously, i would say for newcomer, it is overwhelming and takes time to get use to. overall, I like it so far
Spiritualist is fun. Went and got PSI Jump Drives. Suddenly energy beings from other dimension invaded. Their fleets are like 17k and they expand so quickly.
Had to build a 40k doomstack of Battlecruisers.

just bought Stellaris today seeing that it has a 10% discount.. so curious to try it out. end up playing from 12am to 3am when I told myself earlier that I would be sleeping early lol
so glad that it's not as crazy complex as EU4.. so much easier on the learning curve. Felt more like a Civ game if you utilize and pause, slow, and fast speeds.
highly recommended game for space 4X lovers.. game is highly complex with many random events and discoveries too
in case you have doubts whether to buy the game or not:

Patch 1.2 makes some massive changes. In fact, it is changes to some core parts of the game. I take a look at some of the changes in my latest let's play episode.
Been playing this for a few months now, I think my fleets are not powderful enough to repel the Prethoryn Scourge. They just keep harassing the outer borders, pretty annoying lol. And the other civilizations are too stupid to realise that the Scourge is taking over half of the galaxy already.
I was getting pretty close to finishing my first game like late last year, but i ditched it because my fleet single handedly took down the crisis on my own and i messed around w one of the fallen empire just for the lulz, the difficulty was set at hard tho
The other awakened empire is admittedly no joke though
Planning to get back soon after i done installed a couple of mods that really spice up the game tbh and upping the difficulty for my next game, but until now still havent gotten around to it haha....attention already moved to new Civ VI come the new recent expansion
