SINGAPORE, FRI: German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) has scrapped plans for a tie-up with Proton Holdings Bhd, a report here said.

The car giant conveyed the decision yesterday to Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Proton's main shareholder, said a report in The Straits Times, quoting an unnamed senior Malaysian government official.

The report said VW had told Khazanah that establishing a production platform in Southeast Asia was not a major priority for it at this time as it wanted to concentrate on building its business in Russia and India.

An announcement on the collapsed merger talks could be expected as early as today, the report said.

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government may not be able to meet the end-March deadline in naming the strategic partner for the national carmaker.

I think Mod should really create a new special tag called "SHEMALE". First proud recipient would be Hypermount.

Anyway I hope no other foreign carmakers show any interest in Proton. Showing interest in Proton creates many buzz about Proton's future which IMO should not be there. Foreign partners should know that the only help Proton wants from them is for them to pump in money stupidly into their bank accounts and nothing more.
