Since you are using an old GPU and not really an avid gamer, I say go for it. You will see a nice boost in performance. Should last you awhile for your purposes.

I have been using i7  intel HD graphics for 2 years already. Cannot wait anymore.
Initially thinking of buying a 980ti but the pricing may not be worth it & overkill for 1080p gaming.
So yeah, going for a zotac 970 amp core edition based on the reviews in the internet.

Depends. If nvidia did what they did with kepler n maxwell. Answer is no. They will sell the mid end as the top card before their real highend pascal comes out.
So looking at that time line.. Its gonna be a year or more till we see titan pascal or ti pascal..

I assume you have a graphic card already. so maybe can wait a bit more for pascal.

You gotta set your expectations of "smooth" then. 1080p60 is not smooth to me, especially since I'm playing at 120hz.

If 60fps is your definition of "smooth", then a 960 can technically give you that if you're willing to drop details and not use gimpworks. Comparatively, a 970 couldn't give me 120fps consistently at 1080p on recent games at max details. A 980Ti was needed and that's with a game maxed out.

There are people, believe it or not with SLI 980Tis who play at a locked 4k30fps and they call it smooth. Go figure.

So, what's your definition of smooth?
